Love Island star admits 'I couldn't breathe' after terrifying fire accident

Daily Mirror09-06-2025
Sophie Lee, who survived a devastating fire-breathing stunt that left her with life-altering injuries is now reportedly being lined up for the next series of Love Island
A woman who once fought for her life after a devastating on-stage accident may now be stepping into the spotlight for a very different reason - to find love on Love Island. Sophie Lee, a Manchester-born dancer-turned-model, endured a life-altering ordeal in 2019 while performing in Chicago.
Just 22 at the time, Sophie was performing a fire-breathing routine when a powerful air conditioning system blew a fireball back into her face and chest. 'The air-con was too strong so when I blew the fire out it blew back to me. It set me on fire,' Sophie told Fabulous Magazine.

'I just remember being in so much pain, I blacked out for a little bit. It's crazy. It happened in front of everyone and I had to get on with it as professionally and quickly as I could. As soon as I got into the ambulance, I was in bits."

The injuries were catastrophic. Alone in the U.S., Sophie spent a month in intensive care, relying on machines to stay alive. 'That was a scary, scary time. I couldn't breathe by yourself, I couldn't eat, I couldn't really see, it was scary,' she said. 'I was pretty out of it but on day two I looked in the mirror and just cried."
As she recovered, Sophie faced the emergence of a facial tumour resulting from the burns, which transformed her appearance permanently. But from that trauma came a rebirth - one that now has her put her in the run for reality TV fame.
No longer the young woman clinging to life in a hospital bed, Sophie, now 29, has built a career in beauty and fashion, rising as a sought-after influencer and winner of the 2023 Beauty Awards' Influencer of the Year. She's collaborated with major brands, become an ambassador for the Katie Piper Foundation, and even authored a memoir titled In My Skin.
Her remarkable comeback has reportedly drawn the attention of Love Island producers, who are currently assembling the cast for the upcoming season launching June 9. 'She's in the mix for this year's cast, with execs deciding soon if she will be in the original line-up or a bombshell,' said a show insider.

Sophie is a gorgeous girl and a powerhouse of a woman who has overcome everything life has thrown at her. Just like Tasha Ghouri 's amazing time in the villa where she raised awareness for the hearing impaired, Love Island bosses are thrilled to give Sophie the same platform to discuss her accident and how she's become comfortable in her skin since.'
Despite the show's reputation for superficiality, the insider said: 'Love Island has always tried to be about more than just looks and Sophie is a classic example of an Islander with real substance.'
ITV hasn't confirmed the full cast yet, but anticipation is growing - the show's twelve previous seasons have generated a staggering two billion streams on ITVX.

As for Sophie, her focus isn't on fame, but purpose. 'Life since the accident is definitely something I didn't expect because I just see myself as someone who went through something and thought my story could help others,' she has said.

'My aim was never to get awards or receive that type of attention. With the platform I have now, I feel like I have not only a responsibility to others but a responsibility to myself to be a better person everyday and to always be evolving."
'If people were to take a message from my story I'd say that beauty is always skin deep and your life is perfect just as it is,' she added. 'You just need to be yourself and accepting of life's roller coaster so love your perfectly imperfect life.'

Emmerdale's Dylan returns as fans 'convinced' of family link

Fred Kettle, who played troubled teen Dylan Penders, had previously hinted at 'trouble' for Dylan's return. Dylan played a vital role as April Windsor's friend when she ran away from home earlier this year. However, fans believe that the character's return may lead to upset among one of the soap's families. In a new interview with actor Mark Charnock, who plays Marlon Dingle, on Emmerdale's Facebook page, Fred spoke of his delight at being back. And sneaky fans were quick to speculate that he's part of the Dingle clan. Suggesting he could be a "long-lost Dingle" relative, one user said: 'I'm happy he's back, but I think he could be one of the Dingles' children. 'I think it's Marlon's wife, Lydia's son who she thought died.' Another added: 'Aww loved Dylan, fantastic actor, he's going to go a long way. And I'm convinced he's Eli's son.' While another added: 'Is he Marlon's nephew?' and in response, one fan commented: 'I think that's what a lot of us are hoping.' A post shared by Fred Kettle (@fred_kettle) While a third said: 'I notice they're bringing Dylan back! Wouldn't it be funny if Dylan ended being a long-lost Dingle!' Speaking to The Mirror last month, actor Fred Kettle said he couldn't wait to be back on the ITV soap. "I am so glad to be back,' he said. ITV Love Island spoiler as friends and family have 'strong words' in bombshell episode

Sharkia and Harry are set to face the music in tonight's Love Island episode as friends and family make their way into the villa, with some stern words for some of the couples. Love Island fans are gearing up for a dramatic episode tonight, Monday July 28, as friends and family of contestants finally enter the villa. It couldn't have come at a more tense time, following last night's messy recoupling. ‌ Harry stunned audiences when he admitted things with Helena have felt 'friendly' and he made a 180 degree decision to couple up with former flame Shakira. Despite weeks of being apart, last night's episode saw Helena break down as he confessed he was either "leaving alone or with her [Shakira]". ‌ Many fans are expecting tonight's episode to be full of awkward encounters, particularly when it comes to opinions of Harry among Sharkia and Helena's friends and family. ‌ In spoilers ahead of tonight's episode, Harry's best pal Harry and mum Julia arrive alongside Shakira 's sister Shanti and mum Sukina. Cutting to the core of recent issues, Shakira tells her family of Harry: 'I adore him and I really wish I didn't, that's the problem. It would be easier if I hated him, but I don't.' ‌ Her mum Sukina says: 'What I will say, with him, he can prove himself to you before he has to prove himself to me.' The other Islanders then watch on tenterhooks as the two families come together at the Firepit. As Harry walks over to the Firepit ready to greet them, Helena's mum Sukina keeps her seat and tells him: 'We're not hugging Harry.' Sukina goes on to comment on him ending things with Helena, saying: 'I think the whole of the UK is [surprised]. I'm sorry, but we thought it was 'undeniable' Harry.' ‌ How will Harry handle even more pointed questions from Shakira's family and what will Harry's own mum have to say on the whole situation? Elsewhere, Toni is sitting on the terrace, when suddenly, and very unexpectedly, she hears her mum Leslie shout: 'Is Toni here? Where's Toni?' Realising friends and family have come to visit the Villa, Toni races downstairs to greet her mum who has flown in from Florida. Toni's best friend Marielle has also made the trip and she jokes of being in the Villa: 'It's like meeting our Sims in real life!' ‌ As they catch up, talk turns to her daughter's romantic relationships in the Villa, with Leslie saying: 'The Harrison thing - I'd love to know what voodoo spell he put on you.' Toni replies: 'Sometimes you have to get burned 150 times before you can't get burnt anymore.' Leslie insists of Cach: 'You have the most amazing man. His morals, his ethics, his calm demeanour when he is confronted with a bad situation… he is my king.' Toni laughingly replies: 'No, he's my king - back off!' ‌ Meanwhile, Cach is catching up with his brother D'Shae and sister Ayjah. They discuss him being upset by Toni and Harrison's actions. Cach admits: 'You don't understand how embarrassing it was.' But his sister insists: 'Everyone felt it.' She adds: 'It hurt to see you cry.' D'Shae adds: 'I had to look away.' The two groups of friends and families then mingle, but Leslie has some direct words of advice for another Islander - Harry - before she leaves the Villa. What does Leslie tell him? Meg's mum and sister, Nathalie and Paige, arrive alongside Dejon's mum and sister, Demelza and Gene. In unison Meg's mum and sister yell: 'Where's 'our Meg'?' ‌ Meg's sister Paige wants answers, saying to Meg: 'You let him get away with a lot though, why?' And Dejon's mum Demelza has some thoughts for her son saying: 'In the beginning it was like you had verbal diarrhoea. No mother needs to hear about your threesomes and how much you looooooove sex. I just wanted to go, 'Shut up!'' ‌ Dejon's mum adds: 'You're a big flirt, didn't know that.' Dejon stiffly replies: 'You lot just come in to cook me or what?' His sister Gene insists: 'We've been watching you for the last how many weeks - you need this feedback!' When Meg asks her family 'Does everyone like D or just wary of him?' will she get the answers she wants? Jamie's brother Michael and mum Tina arrive with Yasmin's twin sister Zara and mum Mitra. Tina tells Jamie: 'You are her golden retriever to her black cat!' Zara tells an emotional Yas: 'I'm literally getting stopped, people are coming up to me thinking I'm amount of messages I've got saying, 'Tell your sister she's an icon, she's a legend'.' As Yas starts talking about the future Tina is impressed and says: 'I love the fact that you're looking outside of the Villa as well.'

It often delivers emotional reunions and candid chats, with some families raising concerns or giving their blessing to the couples ahead of the show's conclusion. Teased on Love Island's official account the video highlights Toni's mum enter the villa - much to the surprise of the Islanders. Dejon Noel-Williams will be left shocked as both his mum Demelza and sister Gene show up in Majorca. This is alongside Meg Moore's mum Nathalie and her sister Paige who arrive on the ITV2 set together. However, Love Island fans noticed that Helena and Blu aren't anywhere in the preview clip. Taking to the comments section one wrote: "Is Helena there??" Another fan replied: "I reckon she's walked." "I was thinking the same thing. If she was there it's likely she would have been sat with Meg, Angle and Megan. "Although didn't see Blu either, so they may have been having a chat?" added another. Love Island star will QUIT show after savage recoupling, claim fans "She wasn't there! Has Helena gone?" questioned one viewer as another added: "Why is Helena no where to be seen." "I think she and Blu probably got dumped," explained someone else. "Where is Helena?!" demanded another fan. "I think she might get dumped tonight," explained someone else. Another said: "No Helena or Blue in the first look. I truly hope this means they've been dumped because there is no reason to do a family day for SEVEN couples." While another fan said: "I'm prob over thinking it but could Helena be gone? I'm a bit surprised they didn't show a sneak peak of her with family." Love Island fans previously reckoned that heartbroken Helena could quit the villa following a savage recoupling. The ITV2 dating show's Grafties ceremony brought previously unseen drama to the surface. Helena then ended her romance with Harry Cooksley for good. After she and the other Islanders saw clips of him flirting with other women behind her back. In the latest recoupling, Harry opted for his former love interest Shakira instead of Helena which left Helena in tears. Helena was then left to recouple with Blu Chegini - as the last pair remaining.
