‘Cosby Show' actor Malcolm-Jamal Warner dies in drowning in Costa Rica
US actor Malcolm-Jamal Warner, who played the son in the smash-hit sitcom 'The Cosby Show,' has drowned in Costa Rica, authorities in the country said Monday. He was 54. Warner played the loveable Theo Huxtable for all eight seasons of the show, helmed by disgraced comic actor Bill Cosby. 'We received a report of an adult male who died of drowning asphyxiation at Cocles Beach in Cahuita' on Sunday afternoon, said a statement from investigating police.
'When the victim entered the sea he was apparently pulled out by a current. 'The man was assisted by bystanders on the beach, but was pronounced dead by Red Cross lifeguards.' Local authorities identified him as the actor, and said his body had been transferred to a morgue for further analysis. Warner, who was nominated for an Emmy for his work on 'The Cosby Show,' also appeared in sitcoms 'Malcolm & Eddie' and 'Reed Between the Lines.'
'The Cosby Show,' which ran from 1984 to 1992, was one of the biggest TV hits of its time, detailing the lives of a middle-class Black family in New York. The show was inspired by the stand-up routines of Bill Cosby, who played the family's patriarch, a successful doctor.
The show was a commercial and critical hit, and was seen as groundbreaking for its depiction of a loving, happy Black family. But its legacy has been overshadowed in recent years by dozens of complaints of sexual assault against Cosby, a man once known as 'America's Dad.' — AFP

Actor Micheal Ward charged with rape and sexual assault
LONDON, July 26, (AP): British actor Micheal Ward has been charged with rape and sexual assault, police said Friday. The 27-year-old faces two counts of rape and three counts of sexual assault, the Metropolitan Police force said. The charges relate to one woman and the offenses reportedly took place in January 2023. Ward denied the charges and said in a statement that he has "full faith' that his name will be cleared in court. He's due to appear at London's Thames Magistrates' Court on Aug. 28. Ward has appeared in films including "Blue Story,' "The Book of Clarence' and the recently released American political satire "Eddington.' In 2020, he won the Rising Star award at the British Academy Film Awards, or BAFTAs. He was nominated for an acting BAFTA for Sam Mendes' "Empire of Light' and for a BAFTA television award for the Steve McQueen-directed series "Small Axe.'

National Ballet of Japan to make UK debut

In 2022, the Opera House called off the internationally renowned Moscow-based company's tour and proposed instead to open up their prestigious stage to the Japanese dancers. Founded in 1997, Japan's resident ballet company will perform in London for the first time from Thursday to Sunday. It will perform a production of Giselle, a classic romantic ballet which first premiered in 1841. The production is led by artistic director of the National Ballet of Japan Miyako Yoshida, 59, who was the first Japanese principal dancer at the British ballet institution between 1995 and 2010. Eleven Japanese dancers, including three principal dancers, now perform at the Royal Opera House and make up around 10 percent of the company. Returning to the prestigious stage was not only 'a dream coming true,' but also a lot of 'pressure', Yoshida told AFP. When the Bolshoi's tour was cancelled, director of the Royal Ballet Kevin O'Hare approached his ex-classmate Yoshida to discuss bringing her company to London as a replacement. Aiming for accessibility The ex-ballerina 'never imagined' it would happen 'this quickly', and recalled that scheduling and funding issues had slowed the plans. The chance to perform came 'too soon,' she said. She admitted that the Japanese company, which even though it boasts its capacity to dance a wide repertoire, was perhaps not quite ready to replace one of the oldest and most prestigious ballet companies in the world. The young company put on productions in the US in 2008, and at the Bolshoi Theatre the following year, but this is the first time it will perform a classic Western ballet in Europe. 'I tried to make it easier to understand,' said Yoshida, explaining that 'young people' would not be interested in the ballet 'if it was very old-fashioned'. She wanted to capture the essence of the romantic ballet, which tells a story of forbidden love. Supported by choreographer Alistair Marriott, Yoshida hoped the production would distinguish itself with its pared-back simplicity. For Yoshida, the five London performances aim to 'make the National Ballet of Japan known around the world' and enable its 75 dancers to evolve with other companies from Europe and beyond.
