‘Cosby Show' actor Malcolm-Jamal Warner dies in drowning in Costa Rica

Malcolm-Jamal Warner poses on arrival for the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Los Angeles TV Tea 2015 on September 19, 2015 in Los Angeles, California.--AFP US actor Malcolm-Jamal Warner, who played the son in the smash-hit sitcom 'The Cosby Show,' has drowned in Costa Rica, authorities in the country said Monday. He was 54. Warner played the loveable Theo Huxtable for all eight seasons of the show, helmed by disgraced comic actor Bill Cosby. 'We received a report of an adult male who died of drowning asphyxiation at Cocles Beach in Cahuita' on Sunday afternoon, said a statement from investigating police. 'When the victim entered the sea he was apparently pulled out by a current. 'The man was assisted by bystanders on the beach, but was pronounced dead by Red Cross lifeguards.' Local authorities identified him as the actor, and said his body had been transferred to a morgue for further analysis. Warner, who was nominated for an Emmy for his work on 'The Cosby Show,' also appeared in sitcoms 'Malcolm & Eddie' and 'Reed Between the Lines.' 'The Cosby Show,' which ran from 1984 to 1992, was one of the biggest TV hits of its time, detailing the lives of a middle-class Black family in New York. The show was inspired by the stand-up routines of Bill Cosby, who played the family's patriarch, a successful doctor. The show was a commercial and critical hit, and was seen as groundbreaking for its depiction of a loving, happy Black family. But its legacy has been overshadowed in recent years by dozens of complaints of sexual assault against Cosby, a man once known as 'America's Dad.' — AFP

BAFTA, Cannes Nominee Radhika Apte-Led Sister Midnight To Release In Theatres On This Date

Mumbai (Maharashtra): The 78th British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) nominee Sister Midnight starring Radhika Apte in the lead role is set to release in the theatres on May 23, 2025. The film was written and directed by Karan Kandhari and produced by Alastair Clark, Anna Griffin, and Alan McAlex. Apart from Radhika Apte, the film also stars Ashok Pathak, Chhaya Kadam, Smita Tambe, and Navya Sawant. Nominated for Outstanding British Debut at this year's BAFTA, Sister Midnight was one of the most talked-about titles at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, where it was nominated for the Golden Camera award and in Directors' Fortnight. Also nominated for four British Independent Film Awards (BIFA), Sister Midnight won Best Picture in the Next Wave Award at Austin's Fantastic Fest and was warmly received at festivals across the globe. As per the press note by the makers of the film, the synopsis of the movie states, "Newly married, Uma (Radhika Apte) sets out to adjust to life with her husband, Gopal (Ashok Pathak). Living in a small room together in Mumbai, life isn't easy for her, especially when Gopal disappears for hours on end, leaving her without money. Grudgingly, she learns to cook, with the help of neighbour Sheetal (Chhaya Kadam). But things change for the disgruntled Uma after attending the wedding of Gopal's cousin. Bitten by a mosquito, she begins to feel sick, as she grows pale and thin. Gradually, she experiences a ravenous thirst for the blood of animals. Yet as others fear her, Uma must learn to embrace this transformation or face extinction," as quoted in a press note. The director, Karan, also shared the idea of his inspiration for the film. "It started from just the idea of what happens the very first morning in an arranged marriage when the wife wakes if the guy goes to work and she's just there and you have no manual to do this. It's really just about the fact that there is no manual for anything in life," said Karan as quoted in a press note. He credits the legendary silent movie star Buster Keaton as a major influence. "He was one of my heroes because he could do so much with these subtle facial gestures. And just beyond that, as a filmmaker, what he could do with a restricted frame and the body language and my humour," said Karan as quoted in a press note. Sister Midnight is the directorial debut of Karan Kandhari.

Ukrainian war documentary wins BAFTA award

The documentary Ukraine: Enemy in the Woods has won the 2025 British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA TV Award) for Best Single Documentary. Source: Bafta Details: The film follows Ukrainian service members of the 210th Separate Special Battalion Berlingo. A company of infantrymen in the east, near Kupiansk, confronts Russian forces: "This is an extraordinary portrait of lives compromised by the turmoil of a bloody war, filmed by Ukrainian soldiers. Their mission is to defend a railway line, a key strategic asset that, if captured, will enable Russia to mount a direct attack on Ukraine's second largest city, Kharkiv." The film primarily features recordings from the infantrymen's body cameras. The events unfold over seven weeks during the autumn of 2023. The film, commissioned by BBC Two, was directed by Jamie Roberts. In 2022, Roberts won an Emmy Award for the documentary Escape from Kabul. He also directed the films Four Hours at the Capitol, Vjeran Tomic: The Spider-Man of Paris, and The Jihadis Next Door. The British documentary is similar in format to Ukrainian director Oleh Sentsov's film Real, which chronicles the operations of one of the assault brigades in which Sentsov serves. In the summer of 2023, the brigade participated in a counterattack against Russian forces. Their infantry fighting vehicle is destroyed, and the director, along with his brothers-in-arms, takes cover in a nearby trench. A camera accidentally recorded 90 minutes of the chaos of war, which is difficult to comprehend and even harder to influence. As noted by the film's production team, Real has no editing or special effects, capturing a raw sense of life at the front. Support Ukrainska Pravda on Patreon!
