Viksit Bharat: Engineering empowerment through entrepreneurship and women's inclusion

Hindustan Times28-05-2025
As India strides towards the ambitious vision of Viksit Bharat@2047—a fully developed, self-reliant, and globally influential nation—it becomes essential to examine the transformative engines shaping this journey. Among them, entrepreneurship and engineering stand out as key drivers, with the potential to reshape India's socio-economic framework. But this transformation must be inclusive, particularly of women, if it is to truly reflect the nation's full potential.
Entrepreneurship is no longer restricted to metropolitan startup hubs. It is taking root in smaller towns and rural areas, stimulating local economies, creating employment, and introducing innovative solutions. India, with over 90,000 recognised startups and more than 100 unicorns, now has the third-largest startup ecosystem globally. Yet, numbers alone do not define Viksit Bharat—transformation does.
India produces more than 1.5 million engineering graduates every year, yet many remain underemployed. This gap highlights the need to view engineering not as a qualification but as a mindset, where problem-solving, innovation, and entrepreneurship intersect. New models of training are responding to this challenge by combining hands-on learning with access to national and international coding competitions and hackathons, giving students a chance to apply skills in real scenarios.
Among the most significant shifts is the rise of engineers from tier-2 and tier-3 cities who are securing roles at companies like PayPal and Swiggy without the conventional IIT label. The story of one KodNest alumna receiving a ₹34.4 lakh package from PayPal is often cited as proof that with the right support system, institutional pedigree need not define success. It also reinforces the value of performance-focused training ecosystems that offer high returns without high entry barriers.
Women's inclusion in engineering and entrepreneurship remains a challenge and an opportunity. Women account for just 12–15% of the engineering workforce, and their representation in core branches remains limited. Platforms like KodNest have reported growing female participation, especially from conservative regions, driven by a supportive, mentorship-led environment.
If Viksit Bharat is to be more than a slogan, rural innovation and inclusion must form its foundation. Imagine women in tribal areas using solar-powered tools designed by rural engineers, or self-help groups supported by local polytechnics building blockchain-based supply chains. These aren't future fantasies—they are already taking shape under initiatives such as Unnat Bharat Abhiyan and the National Rural Livelihood Mission.
What's needed now is greater visibility, financial literacy, and access to digital tools. Engineering colleges can act as incubators while women-led microenterprises grow into strong local economies. In this model, both engineers and entrepreneurs become architects of grassroots development.
The government and private sectors must come together to invest in Centers of Innovation, Engineer Startup Corps, and gender-responsive education. These investments will not only close the employability gap but also help reimagine Indian families, schools, and workplaces as spaces that promote risk-taking, inclusion, and creativity.
As we look ahead to 2047, the triad of entrepreneurship, engineer empowerment, and women's leadership must be more than policy points—it must be embedded in the cultural and economic DNA of the nation.
Let's not just imagine a developed India. Let's build it—engineer it, innovate it, and include everyone in the process.

Delhi: NDMC mulls revamp of 250 kiosks into smart outlets

The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has decided to revamp and modernise all existing kiosks in its jurisdiction, the civic agency's Vice Chairman Kuljeet Singh Chahal said on Sunday. He said the initiative is a part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's mission Viksit Bharat @2047 and Viksit Delhi. Chahal said that most of the kiosks in the NDMC area are over 50 years old, and their redevelopment is essential to bring uniformity, symmetry, and enhanced aesthetic appeal to the urban landscape of New Delhi. "In the first phase, NDMC will redevelop 50 kiosks, and in subsequent phases, around 200-250 kiosks will be redesigned into aesthetically appealing, smart city – compatible structures," he added. Chahal said that the Architecture Department of NDMC is currently preparing the modern design for these kiosks. "Once the design is finalised, we will initiate the procedures for execution," he said. Emphasising the broader vision, Chahal said, 'The Government of India's Viksit Bharat @2047 roadmap, envisioned by the Prime Minister, inspires us to reimagine and upgrade all public spaces — be it kiosks, footpaths, roads, parks, or gardens.' The NDMC's initiative is not just about beautification but also about creating a modern, standardised, and citizen-friendly urban environment that reflects the capital city's identity, he said. Earlier, the civic agency's architecture department shared its plans to redevelop its properties in commercial areas like Khan Market, Super Bazar and Yashwant Place under public-private partnership (PPP) model. The NDMC is looking to appoint a consultant to explore the possibilities of optimising revenue generation from these key commercial areas. The multi-storey Super Bazar building in the outer circle of Connaught Place is of particular interest to the NDMC as it recently regained its possession after a protracted legal battle. The building was used for operating a co-operative store from 1966 to 2002. Over the decades, several proposals for using the vacant six-storey building have been discussed in government circles. Some proposals talked but converting the property into a multi-storey night bazaar or using it as a permanent location for street vendors operating across the NDMC area.

"The economic and military heights India reached during the Chola era continue to inspire us even today. Rajaraja Chola built a powerful navy, which he further strengthened. The Chola Empire is like an ancient roadmap for developed India. It tells us that if we have to make 'Viksit Bharat,' then we have to strengthen our navy and defence forces and explore new opportunities. Today, India is embracing the philosophy of Vikas Bhi, Virasat Bhi. Modern India takes great pride in its rich history and cultural legacy. Over the past decade, we have worked tirelessly in mission mode to protect and preserve India's heritage," PM Modi said. Live Events The Prime Minister donned traditional attire, consisting of a white veshti (dhoti), a white shirt, and an angavasthram around his neck. He mentioned that the country has recovered many ancient statues and artefacts that were stolen and sold abroad, and has successfully brought them back to the country in recent years. "Efforts have been made to recover ancient statues and artefacts that were stolen and sold abroad, and many of these priceless treasures have been successfully brought back to the country. After 2014, more than 600 ancient artefacts and statues have been brought back to India. Out of these, 36 are from the state of Tamil Nadu. The Shaivite tradition has greatly influenced India's cultural identity," he said, emphasising that the Chola emperors were important in building and preserving the heritage. Underscoring the cultural and historical importance of the southern state, Prime Minister Modi said that Tamil Nadu remains a centre where the rich traditions of the past continue to thrive. He also noted that the revered saints from the Shaivite Adheenams led the ceremony with spiritual grace during the inauguration of the new Parliament building. "During the inauguration of the new Parliament building, the revered saints from our Shaivite Adheenams led the ceremony with spiritual grace. The sacred Sengol, a symbol deeply embedded in Tamil culture, was ceremoniously installed in the new Parliament. Reflecting on that moment today fills me with immense pride. The Chola emperors had woven India into a thread of cultural unity. Today, our government is carrying forward the same vision of the Chola era. Through initiatives like the Kashi-Tamil Sangamam and the Saurashtra-Tamil Sangamam, we are strengthening these centuries-old bonds of unity," he added. He further mentioned that Rajendra Chola built the magnificent Gangaikonda Cholapuram Temple, which remains an architectural marvel admired worldwide. The Chola Empire's legacy also gave rise to the celebration of the Maa Ganga festival on the land of the sacred river Kaveri, the Prime Minister added. He was welcomed by the local pandits in the temple. Earlier in the day, crowds thronged to see the Prime Minister as he held a roadshow in the Tiruchirappalli district. His convoy received a warm welcome from the commoners gathered to witness his arrival. The temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is famed for its intricate sculptures, Chola bronzes, and ancient inscriptions. The Aadi Thiruvathirai festival also celebrates the rich Tamil Shaiva Bhakti tradition, fervently supported by the Cholas and immortalised by the 63 Nayanmars--the saint-poets of Tamil Shaivism. Notably, Rajendra Chola's birth star, Thiruvathirai (Ardra), begins on July 23, making this year's festival all the more significant.

'The launch of this new range is a step forward in upping the protein consumption of consumers, while also enabling them to enjoy their favourite burger. This is just the start and I am sure we will partner with McDonald's in the coming months to launch more high-protein products for the Indian consumer," added Bhakoo. This initiative supports Swiggy's recent push toward healthier eating.
