Delhi: NDMC mulls revamp of 250 kiosks into smart outlets
He said the initiative is a part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's mission Viksit Bharat @2047 and Viksit Delhi.
Chahal said that most of the kiosks in the NDMC area are over 50 years old, and their redevelopment is essential to bring uniformity, symmetry, and enhanced aesthetic appeal to the urban landscape of New Delhi.
"In the first phase, NDMC will redevelop 50 kiosks, and in subsequent phases, around 200-250 kiosks will be redesigned into aesthetically appealing, smart city – compatible structures," he added.
Chahal said that the Architecture Department of NDMC is currently preparing the modern design for these kiosks. "Once the design is finalised, we will initiate the procedures for execution," he said.
Emphasising the broader vision, Chahal said, 'The Government of India's Viksit Bharat @2047 roadmap, envisioned by the Prime Minister, inspires us to reimagine and upgrade all public spaces — be it kiosks, footpaths, roads, parks, or gardens.'
The NDMC's initiative is not just about beautification but also about creating a modern, standardised, and citizen-friendly urban environment that reflects the capital city's identity, he said.
Earlier, the civic agency's architecture department shared its plans to redevelop its properties in commercial areas like Khan Market, Super Bazar and Yashwant Place under public-private partnership (PPP) model.
The NDMC is looking to appoint a consultant to explore the possibilities of optimising revenue generation from these key commercial areas.
The multi-storey Super Bazar building in the outer circle of Connaught Place is of particular interest to the NDMC as it recently regained its possession after a protracted legal battle. The building was used for operating a co-operative store from 1966 to 2002.
Over the decades, several proposals for using the vacant six-storey building have been discussed in government circles. Some proposals talked but converting the property into a multi-storey night bazaar or using it as a permanent location for street vendors operating across the NDMC area.

Trump signed off India tariff bomb with MAGA. What's the message?
It wasn't as if no one saw this coming. The signs were clear. The warnings, not-so-subtle. On Tuesday, US President Donald Trump once again threatened to slap 25 per cent tariffs on Indian goods. And then, the inevitable finally dropped the bomb on Wednesday, imposing a 25 per cent tariff on Indian imports to the US—plus a penalty for buying military equipment and energy from though Trump began by calling India "our friend" in his Truth Social post, his close aide Lindsey Graham's warning to BRICS countries a week ago—that the US President intends to crush their economies, including India's—suggests otherwise. However, in a quizzical move, Trump signed off his tariff announcement to India by writing 'MAGA!' at the tariff structure has drawn repeated criticism from Trump, dating back to his first term and even before he took oath for the second, with him calling New Delhi a "very big abuser" when it comes to levying duties on US after several rounds of discussion, agriculture remained the biggest bone of contention between the two sides, with India unwilling to open up its farm and dairy sectors to the US— a political self-goal that no ruling party at the Centre is willing to commit what India would have imagined five months ago, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi was in the US envisioning a MEGA partnership, while referencing Trump's MAGA.'In India, we are working towards a Viksit Bharat, which in the American context translates into Make India Great Again (MIGA),' PM Modi had tweeted in February, posing next to PM Modi's vision of a 'Viksit Bharat', hungry for cheap Russian energy to fuel its needs, did not align with Trump's 'Make America Great Again' mantra, who is ready to go to any length to save an extra dime for his later, the idea of MIGA lay in tatters as Trump announced heavy tariffs on India. What piqued interest, however, was his signing off with MAGA—an appeal to his voter base—something he hadn't done while announcing similar tariffs on countries like South Korea, the Philippines, or begs an important question: why sign off with MAGA only for India, but not for others? Is it because Trump is finally playing to the gallery—appearing to please his MAGA base, which was unhappy over his softer stance on immigration and H-1B policies that benefit India—just days before stepping into the Oval Office?advertisementIt was evident when Trump's decision to nominate Chennai-born techie Sriram Krishnan to lead AI policy in his administration set the cat among the pigeons, with MAGA supporters decrying his perceived 'India First' agenda, as his social media reflected support for easing green card restrictions for skilled has carefully course-corrected ever since. Moving further away from PM Modi's equation of MAGA + MIGA = his administration's swift cancellation of the legal status of university students in the US to his 'Big, Beautiful Bill' making money remittances from Indians in the US to India more expensive, Indians are slowly but steadily coming to realise that the American Dream may be over.- Ends

Delhi court upholds magistrate's order refusing probe against NDMC officials
New Delhi, Jul 30 (PTI) A Delhi court has dismissed an appeal against a magistrate's order refusing to issue summons and order an investigation into assault allegations against four New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) officials, including a chief engineer. Additional sessions judge Saurabh Partap Singh Laler observed that in cases involving allegations against public servants in restricted government premises, courts had to exercise heightened scrutiny to shield them from vexatious litigation. The court was hearing a revision petition by Vishal Parashar, a contractor, who alleged that he was assaulted, threatened, and wrongfully detained by four NDMC officials, including a chief engineer, an executive engineer and two security officials, in the civic body's Palika Kendra office on March 10, 2023. Parashar then filed a plea in a magisterial court seeking a summons against the accused and an investigation, but it was dismissed in March this year on the grounds that the complaint was 'unsubstantiated and potentially motivated by ongoing civil or contractual grievances with NDMC". Against the magistrate's order, Parashar filed the present appeal. In an order dated July 23, the court said, 'In cases involving allegations against public servants in restricted government premises, courts must exercise heightened scrutiny to shield officials from vexatious litigation arising from official duties." Flagging the issue of Parashar not providing a valid proof of entry and lack of permission to meet the chief engineer, it trashed his claim that no pass was demanded from him ever since he started visiting the office in 2017. 'The magistrate's reasoning is precise and justified, reinforcing that such unsubstantiated claims cannot form the basis for criminal prosecution," the court said. It said that the magistrate had correctly discerned that the petitioner's grievances stemmed from protracted civil disputes involving contractual payments, RTI appeals, and claims against NDMC. The court said the alleged incident arose during an unsolicited visit to discuss these matters, indicating an ulterior motive to leverage criminal proceedings as a tool to coerce the release of approximately Rs 15 lakh in pending dues. The court further noted that the magistrate had also correctly flagged other issues, such as the absence of independent public witnesses and the lack of corroboration of the allegations. It said, 'The magistrate appropriately underscored that the issuance of summons under Section 204 of Code of Criminal Procedure demands judicial satisfaction of sufficient grounds, rather than a mechanical exercise." 'The order's comprehensive analysis— encompassing vague allegations, evidentiary deficits, and the underlying civil motives— reflects a diligent application of this standard, ensuring that criminal proceedings are not initiated frivolously," the court added. Dismissing the appeal, it said there was no impropriety in the magistrate's order.
