David Gray not too downhearted despite Bolton defeat
However he was pleased to see former teammate Darren McGregor honoured at his Testimonial Match, and remained buoyant despite the off-day against English League One opposition.
Two second-half strikes sealed the win for the visitors as Hibs struggled to impact the game as much as Gray and his coaching staff would have liked.
After the final whistle he said: 'It wasn't our best, most fluent performance by any means. We all know that. There's a lot of improvement to come.
'We've got a lot of hard work still to be done and we've got a really good game to look forward to on Thursday.
'I'm really happy with our pre-season, but today I think we can be miles better. We know the areas we can be better in.
'We'll be back in on Monday and we'll need to make sure we are bang at it to improve.'
It was a competitive encounter between the two sides, with Steven Schumacher's side offering Hibs a tough, physical test in torrential conditions.
According to Gray, the difficulty of the fixture was no different to other pre-season matches so far however, but instead just a different style to play against.
'When you look at all of our games in pre-season, they have all been difficult games.
'The standard of the opposition we have took on, that is all with European games in mind because of the variety in teams you can potentially face.
'Today was more of a domestic challenge we would face week in, week out in Scotland – which is high intensity and very aggressive.
'I'm not getting too downheartened by what I have seen. A lot of good work has been done and I'm happy with the fitness levels of the players.'
Gray also touched on Darren McGregor's warm reception at Easter Road, with the current Hibernian Under-19s Head Coach and former Hibs centre-back's service to the Club celebrated with a Testimonial Match.
The two defenders both won the 2016 Scottish Cup together, with Gray only having great things to say about his former teammate.
'It's a special day for Darren and his family. I wish we had a better result for him but, on the whole, for what he has done for this Club, it was a fitting testimonial and I'm delighted to be part of that for him.
'As I've said, it is a special day for a special person who has given a lot to this Club. It's his childhood club, the team he grew up supporting and he has spoken very honestly about what this Club means to him.
'He deserves all the praise and accolades he's had over his time at Hibs, because he has certainly left nothing out there for them.'

His European adventures started in Iceland 11 years ago - now one Hibs star hopes to step foot into the continental scene for the first time. David Gray's side are gearing up for a Europa League second round qualifier first leg against FC Midtjylland in Denmark on Thursday. They will hope to leave the tie in a good place for the return leg at Easter Road a week later, with Chris Cadden one of the several stars looking forward to action. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad He was in a travelling squad with Motherwell for a 2014 Europa League qualifier against Stjarnan, and has missed out on all of Hibs' European dates in his time at Easter Road due to injury. Thoughts he was a jinx had started to creep in but what will be exactly 11 years to the day the wing back was in Iceland with Motherwell, there's a chance to get battling over in Denmark. Hibs star on why Europa League battle means so much Cadden said: 'I was in travelling squads, but I don't think I ever came on at all. I think Iceland was one I was there. But, of course, it's a good bit of experience and whatnot. That's what you want to do. Have a successful season and go and play in Europe. That's what you want to do, and it's been an ambition of mine. So, yes, I'm looking forward to it. 'You're making me feel old now! I know I've been about for a wee while now. But, no, I've enjoyed my career and how it's gone. 11 years on, well, that's made me feel pretty old. You forget how old you are but I still feel about 21! No, it's good and obviously I've worked hard to get to this level and get to the size of the club Hibs is. It's the benefits of your hard work. 'I thought I was a bit of a jinx, to be honest, I've missed the last two times in Europe for injury. So, yes, personally it will be good to play in Europe. I have ambition as well. When you sign for a club like Hibs, that's what you want to do. You want to try to win trophies, finishing at the top end of the table, but also have European football to look forward to if you're doing well. That's one of the reasons why you sign for the club. I missed the last two, so it will be good to get there.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Hibs target vs FC Midtjylland Looking ahead to the game, Cadden says the clashes ahead in Europe are just reward for finishing third in the league last term, but the target is now reaching their maximum to give themselves a crack at famous nights. The 28-year-old added: 'That's the rewards we get for having such a good season last year. We're looking forward to the challenge. Obviously, away leg first, it'll be tough. We're under no illusions about how tough it's going to be and the pedigree they've got, but we need to be the best versions of ourselves to go and beat them. 'When I look around, it's top quality. The additions have been really good, settled in really well. Obviously, a positive season last season, so we just need to keep rolling with that and just add quality, which I think we've done. You look about and the squad depth we've got is really good. You can see the level in training as well. It's high quality and things like that. The squad depth is good and we have real quality there. 'You'd rather have expectations of a good season than having a poor season. That just comes with playing in a big club and having a successful season. That's what you want as a player. You want to go and have a little bit of expectation, a little bit of pressure, because it means you're doing something right. There's a little bit of pressure, a little bit of expectation and stuff like that, but we've earned the right to go and do that with how well last season has gone. But, saying that, last season is done. It's now a new season and we've got a big one ahead of us, which we're ready to go for.'

Ex-Rangers boss Alex McLeish reflects on Euro agony vs Panathinaikos and offers Walter Smith advice to Russell Martin
He's shared some memories of his early days at Ibrox GREEK TRAGEDY Ex-Rangers boss Alex McLeish reflects on Euro agony vs Panathinaikos and offers Walter Smith advice to Russell Martin Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) ALEX McLEISH saw his European dreams crushed the last time Rangers faced Panathinaikos in the Champions League. Now he hopes Russell Martin's side make amends on Tuesday night. Sign up for the Rangers newsletter Sign up 6 Michael Mols' goal wasn't enough to stop Rangers going down to Panathinaikos 6 Alex McLeish's men needed to win at Ibrox to drop into the UEFA Cup 6 But the 3-1 defeat saw McLeish's charges crash out of Europe Eck was in charge at Ibrox when they hosted the Greeks in the group stages in December 2003. Back-to-back away defeats to Manchester United and Stuttgart, after a home loss to the Old Trafford side, had killed their knockout stage hopes. Gers had a solid start, beating the Germans in Govan and drawing away in Athens. Still, a win against the Greeks on matchday six would have seen Rangers into the Uefa Cup. But a 3-1 loss saw them finish bottom of Group E on goal difference. Michael Mols put Gers ahead, but goals from Raimondas Zutautas, Angelos Basinas and Michalis Konstantinou stunned Ibrox. McLeish said: 'We'd got past FC Copenhagen in the qualifying round then started the group well against Stuttgart. 'We could actually have won in Greece too — they scored right at the end to get a draw. 'But 1-1 was a good result, and four points out of six was a good start. 'We were a bit limp in the two United games, and went into the last game at Ibrox knowing a Uefa Cup place was the best we could get. New Rangers chiefs Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe's first interview 'Mols put us ahead but they equalised straight away, went in front, and hit us with a third on the break when we were pushing forward. 'It was a poor performance, and I just hope Rangers can make amends for it on Tuesday night. 'After the Treble in 2002-03 we'd made a lot of changes to the squad and we were in the middle of a rebuild. 'Barry Ferguson and Lorenzo Amoruso had joined Blackburn, Neil McCann went to Southampton, Arthur Numan had left. 'The squad was definitely weaker and it showed in the European games. 'It was still pretty close against Panathinaikos, but we weren't at the level of previous seasons.' McLeish knows the pressure is on new Gers boss Martin going into Tuesday's clash — but thought back to his first Old Firm game as manager, the CIS Cup semi-final in 2002, for inspiration. Eck added: 'I was staying in a hotel and I was stomping around my room the night before with all those thoughts in my head. Have YOU got a point for Kris Boyd? 'There had been a bit of scepticism about my appointment, and we were going into my first Old Firm game with Celtic going for back-to-back Trebles. 'I'd the wee devil on one side going, 'What if you never beat Celtic? You'll go down in history as a dumpling'. "And the wee angel was going, 'But what if you win? How good would it be?'. 'I rang Sir Alex Ferguson that night and had a chat, told him how we were going into the game as underdogs. 'He said to make sure my defence was locked tight, but also to make sure I'd one or two in the team with the X-factor. 'Being honest, I wasn't envisaging Bert Konterman as my X-factor guy! 6 "But he was the hero of the hour with his flash of inspiration to win the game. 'I get the fans' concern about whether there's been enough preparation for this. 'But it would be a fantastic boost if Russell got his tactics right and got a result. It would silence the doubters. 'For me, that Celtic game lit the touchpaper and we went on to win trophies. So it just takes one result. 6 Alex McLeish hopes Russell Martin fares better against the Greeks than he did "But Russell will know it's going to be tough. Greece's international team were really good against Scotland in the Nations League play-off in March. 'It's not going be a walkover and I don't think people are thinking that way. 'It might be that Rangers need that underdog mentality. Make sure they are absolutely watertight but still have a bit of flair, with match winners in the side. 'Russell had a very difficult job at Southampton and he knows the demands at Rangers. 'I think back to going to dinner with Walter Smith and our wives when I took over. "I asked if he had any tips for me, and he looked furtively over his shoulder and leaned forward towards me. 'I thought, 'Brilliant, I'm going to get some penetrating insight, the benefit of all his experience'. 6 'And he said, 'Just f****** win, that's all there is to it!'. I carried that into every single game. 'Russell has been at Rangers, he knows there are critics everywhere and that expectation of winning every week. 'It would be nice to go to Greece with a 2-0 lead. But it will be difficult.' Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Celtic and Rangers in hunt for Serbian starlet Andrej Bacanin with transfer set to be completed ‘in the next 10 days'
Other European heavyweights are also interested in the teenager OLD FIRM FIGHT Celtic and Rangers in hunt for Serbian starlet Andrej Bacanin with transfer set to be completed 'in the next 10 days' Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) RANGERS and Celtic are both said to be in the hunt for Serbian teenage prospect, Andrej Bacanin. And a deal for the central midfielder is expected to be completed 'in the next 10 days', with Euro giants Ajax and Udinese also credited with an interest. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 Andrej Bacanin is being trailed by both Rangers and Celtic. Image: FK Cukaricki Bacanin, 18, is a highly-rated prospect currently on the books of Serbian Super League side FK Cukaricki – but was left out of their league opener against Napretka as transfer speculation rises. Sporting director Vladimir Matijasevic revealed that Bacanin and defender Vojin Serafmovic are both expected to rake in millions for the club in the coming weeks. Bacanin is the one of the two more in demand, with Matijasevic claiming both Rangers and Celtic lead the queue for his signature. He told the Cukaricki website: 'There is a lot of interest in our young players, and currently the focus is on the transfer of Andrej Bačanin. 'He attracted the attention of numerous clubs by playing for our team last season but also for the Serbian national team at his age. 'We had calls from the Scottish giants Celtic and Rangers, Ajax, Udinese, and some other teams are interested. 'It is possible that some other options will appear, and I expect the transfer to be realized in the next ten days. "I expect that this will be another big outgoing transfer of Cukaricki, which would cover the budget of our club.' The Serbia under-19 cap is valued at around £430,000 (500,000 Euros) by football data specialists Transfermarkt although a transfer bidding war could see that price tag rise dramatically. The player was talked up glowingly last year by a Serbian football scout – who compared him to Bayern Munich's young star, Alexsandar Pavlovic. Edouard to return and Schmeichel's last year at Celtic Plus Munteanu LATEST They wrote on X: 'One of the most intriguing young midfield talents we have is 17-year-old Andrej Bačanin. 'A true midfield controller - the type of player our senior NT lacks and who could become a game-changer for us in time. 'A capable passer with both feet, including first-time passes. 'Mostly played short and medium passes here but has that range too. 'Comfortable with his back to goal, progressive, a line-breaker when possible.
