Paddy Pimblett picks 'motivated' Max Holloway to beat Dustin Poirier at UFC 318

USA Today4 days ago
Paddy Pimblett thinks the moment could be too big for Dustin Poirier to handle at UFC 318.
Poirier (30-9 MMA, 22-8 UFC) will make his final walk to the octagon in a trilogy bout against BMF champion Max Holloway (26-8 MMA, 22-8 UFC) on July 19 from Smoothie King Center in New Orleans (ESPN+ pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+). With Poirier retiring in his hometown and already having beaten Holloway twice, Pimblett (23-3 MMA, 7-0 UFC) sees "Blessed" with more to gain.
"It would be heavy for Holloway if there's two different fighters who have beat him three times," Pimblett said on the "Verse Us Podcast" with Eric Nicksick. "I've seen him say something like, 'He took a lot from me, he gave me my first loss, and he took away my win streak, so I'm going to take his retirement fight.'
"I think Holloway's motivated. I can see Holloway winning, to be honest. Don't know why. I think it's just one of them. Dustin fighting in his hometown, his last fight, everyone expects him to win, the pressure. I think he might (win). You might think it's a bit more favorable because he beat him twice, though."
Pimblett is edging closer to title contention after a dominant finish of Michael Chandler at UFC 314 in April. He faced off with newly crowned lightweight champion Ilia Topuria immediately after the conclusion of the UFC 317 main event.

Warriors considered trading for LeBron James recently

When LeBron James decided to exercise his player option for the 2025-26 season on June 29, his agent, Rich Paul, issued a cryptic statement that acknowledged the Los Angeles Lakers are building for the future and that James wants to be in a situation where he can contend for the NBA championship. Many have interpreted that statement as being a prelude to a possible trade request. Executing a trade that would send James to a team that would have enough talent left over to compete for the world title would be very difficult, especially since James has a very rare no-trade clause in his contract. According to ESPN's Bobby Marks, there may not even be a trade market for the 40-year-old high-maintenance superstar. However, a recent ESPN report indicated that there were some teams that thought about shooting their shot at landing James in a trade. One of those teams was the Golden State Warriors. "A handful of teams -- including the Golden State Warriors, who tried to trade for James in 2023-24 -- considered again whether to make an offer, sources said," wrote Ramona Shelburne and Brian Windhorst. The Warriors had previously contacted the Lakers about trading for James — once this past season just after the Lakers acquired Luka Doncic, and once previously just before the 2023-24 trade deadline. James is good friends with Warriors mainstays Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, and he has hinted in the past that he would love to play on the same team as Curry. The two superstars did play together last summer as members of Team USA men's basketball and helped lead the squad to an Olympic gold medal. The NBA's all-time leading scorer has been quiet lately, which has lent a bit of mystery to the whole situation between his camp and the Lakers. Meanwhile, the team has gotten a bit closer to championship contention by signing center Deandre Ayton and forward Jake LaRavia as free agents.

Buccaneers' Tight End Missing From Elite List

Buccaneers' Tight End Missing From Elite List originally appeared on Athlon Sports. While some Tampa Bay Buccaneers players are finally starting to garner some national attention, others are not. This offseason, we've seen the likes of Mike Evans, Bucky Irving, Tristan Wirfs, Baker Mayfield, Antoine Winfield Jr. and Jamel Dean honored on "best of" lists representing Tampa Bay. Advertisement But as we peruse ESPN's top 10 tight ends in the NFL ahead of the 2025 season, there's no Bucs player to be found - no Cade Otton. Is that deserved? Maybe. Otton is good. He's good for the Bucs. But is he elite? Certainly an argument could be made that he's not. Especially with his history of drops. Otton was a fourth-round pick by the Bucs in 2022 out of then-Pac-12 powerhouse Washington. He had an impressive rookie campaign with 391 yards and two touchdowns, but suffered from drops. He posted just 42 catches on 65 targets with five drops, leading all tight ends. The next season wasn't much better, with three drops on 67 targets, and he got worse last season. In 2024, Otton posted 59 catches on 87 targets with 600 yards and four touchdowns but eight drops. Advertisement If Otton can clean up his pass catching, he'd be a far more effective offensive tool for Mayfield and the Bucs. In ProFootballFocus' rankings earlier this season, Otton was No. 20 overall, which actually sounds a little high, honestly. "Otton's Achilles' heel is drops. He has the third most (11) at the position across the past two years. His 63.1 PFF receiving grade in 2024 was a career high and also marks the first time he generated more than 1 yard per route run (1.31). If he can hang on to the ball (also three fumbles the past two years), Otton has the skills to rise on this list." This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jul 11, 2025, where it first appeared.

Gaston Reyno wants to take BKFC event to Uruguay: 'It would be a dream come true'

Gaston Reyno has one wish: to close out his fighting career in his hometown of Montevideo, Uruguay. Reyno, a former Bellator fighter and current UFC Spanish commentator for Latin America, returns to action this Saturday at BKFC 78 at the Hard Rock in Hollywood, Fla. Reyno sees this bout against Milton Volter as an opportunity to shoot his shot with the big bosses and make his case for the promotion to pay a visit to Uruguay. Advertisement "I would love to close out my career at the Antel Arena," Reyno told Hablemos MMA in Spanish. "When the UFC went to Uruguay at the Antel Arena, I couldn't fight. I had a contract with another company (Combate Global), and we tried everything, and we couldn't make it happen. ... I still have Antel Arena in sight. I've never fought at home. The only time I've fought at home was at Punta del Este, which is home but not home. In Punta del Este there are more Brazilians and Argentinians than Uruguayans. I want to fight in Montevideo and I want to fight in that arena. "If I win, and win well, I'm going to grab that microphone, look at Feldman and Conor McGregor and tell them that I want to take BKFC to South America. BKFC has never gone to South America, how is that possible? They did seven events in Asia. They did an event in Dubai. They had an event in a bull fighting arena in Marbella, an amazing event. How come we don't have an event in South America? I'd love to open that door from Uruguay. I'd retire on top. Reyno, 39, is arguably the most well-known MMA fighter to come out of Uruguay. Although no longer fighting in MMA, Reyno still feels the backing of his country. He's confident BKFC could sell out the Antel Arena just like the UFC did in their first and only trip to Uruguay. "Tonga" wants to fight on home soil before he calls it quits. It doesn't matter who it's against. Advertisement "If I fight a monster and I get broken, who cares, I don't care about the result," Reyno said. "I don't want to be champion, become a millionaire. I'm happy with my life. I live commentary. I love where I work. I'm in love with my wife. I love my son. I adore the city I live in. I'm a happy man. I just want one thing: Share a night with my people in Montevideo, Uruguay. It sounds cliché, but it would be a dream come true. It would be the closing of my career."
