NHAI takes action against contractor, engineer for poor quality work
NHAI in a statement said an incident of distressed condition of pavement crust at some locations of six-lane Sanchore – Santalpur Section of Amritsar-Jamnagar Economic Corridor (NH–754K) in Gujarat (Pkg-4 from Kilana to Santalpur) constructed by CDS Infra Projects Limited (Contractor) was reported.
New Delhi, Jul 3 (PTI) State-owned NHAI on Thursday said it has suspended a contractor, an authority engineer and an NHAI official for the distressed condition of pavement at some locations on the Amritsar-Jamnagar Corridor section in Gujarat.
A show cause notice for debarment and levy of monetary penalty of Rs 2.8 crore has also been issued, it added.
The statement further said the authority's engineer (SA Infra in association with Upham) has also been debarred on immediate basis from participating in ongoing/ future bids and a show cause notice for debarment has been issued.
NHAI project director, Palanpur, has been placed on suspension, it said.
Expert Committees with Retd. and current Prof. of IIT-BHU, IIT-Delhi, IIT- Gandhinagar have been constituted for analysing the failure of Pavement Crust. Expert Committees are visiting the site, collecting samples to undertake tests and recommend detailed remedial measures to be taken.

Jumbos get safe passage as Bescom secures power lines in forests around Bengaluru
Bengaluru: Sagging power transmission lines and live wires drawn from transformers to energise irrigation pump (IP) sets in agricultural fields abutting forest areas around Bengaluru and adjoining districts once posed a considerable threat to elephants and other wildlife. However, with the intervention of the high court, these forest areas have now become a safe habitat and passage for jumbos and other animals. Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) has converted 1,342km of overhead bare conductors into either covered conductors or aerial bunched cables at cost of Rs 150 crore. Securing these transmission lines in forest areas with covered conductors has come as a welcome relief for the forest department's conservation efforts, reflected in the considerable drop in the number of elephant electrocution deaths in these forests. Sources in the forest department said forests around Bengaluru and its adjoining districts, such as Kolar, Ramanagar, and Tumakuru, have a population of over 400 wild elephants. Taking cognisance of elephant electrocution during the hearing of PIL, the high court directed the forest department to coordinate with Bescom and ensure safe passage and habitat for elephants and other wildlife. Wherever possible, we covered the bare conductors with insulators, and in other places, they have been bunched and secured so that even if animals come in contact with them, they will not suffer electric shock," the engineer said. KJ George, energy minister, pointed out that most of these conductors included transmission lines to farmers' IP sets, low-level electric poles, transformers, and 11 kV transmission lines. "We took this work as a high priority, and work was taken up on a war footing to ensure these areas become safe for elephants. Mysuru: Tiger deaths outside tiger reserves have raised concerns, even as authorities are contemplating plans to step up measures for the protection of big cats. The recent death of five tigers in MM Hills Wildlife Sanctuary has once again drawn attention to the need for stronger tiger conservation measures outside reserve areas. This year, seven out of ten tiger deaths in Karnataka occurred outside the designated tiger reserves. Between 2012 and 2024 (till Sept), 179 tigers died in Karnataka, some of them outside tiger reserves and national parks where conservation plans are strictly implemented as per the provisions of the Wildlife Protection Act. Karnataka recorded the presence of 565 tigers during the tiger census, and about 60 of them are in non-tiger reserve areas. Karnataka has five tiger reserves—Bandipur, Nagarahole, BRT, Bhadra, and Kali. Four tigers died outside the reserve area in 2024, six tigers in 2023, and three tigers in 2022. Now, after several incidents of tiger conflicts and deaths outside reserves across India, the NTCA recently revealed plans to bring in strict regulations to protect the tigers. Another officer claimed that when injured or aged tigers seek shelter in the forest border, they usually prey on cattle being grazed near the forest. ‘Lack of announcements a deficiency in service': Railways told to pay Rs 7,000 to family that missed train
Ghaziabad: The district consumer forum has ruled that failure to provide proper information on train schedule through public announcements constitutes a "deficiency of service" under the Consumer Protection Act. The consumer commission made this observation while ordering the Ghaziabad railway station authorities and senior officials at Northern Railways to pay Rs 7,000 as compensation to a family that missed their train due to inadequate announcements. On Feb 29 last year, Muradnagar resident Anubhav Prajapati, along with his wife Priyanka and two children, missed the Chhattisgarh Express to Jhansi. The family had arrived at Ghaziabad railway station well before the train's scheduled departure at 3.20am and waited in the first-class lounge. After an announcement about a 40-minute delay, they moved to platform 3 at 3.25am. However, they found Ayodhya Express stationed there for over 45 minutes.
