A.P. Minister for Energy directs officials to educate public about smart meters
The Minister was in the City on Monday to hold a comprehensive review meeting with the APEPDCL officials in the presence of its Chairman and Managing Director I. Prudhvi Tej to assess power supply within the APEPDCL jurisdictionand the progress of the smart metering.
The Minister directed the officials to address the misconceptions circulating on social media through structured outreach efforts. He called on officials to engage directly with consumers, providing accurate information on where and why smart meters are being deployed.
'Ensure that any doubts are resolved before installations are taken up. I made it clear that no smart meters have been installed for agricultural connections in Andhra Pradesh, affirming that the rollout is restricted solely to industrial and commercial consumers,' Mr. Ravi Kumar said.
He directed the DISCOMs to proactively educate people on smart meters and clarify on the smart meter policy and dispell any misinformation or apprehensions around the technology.
Addressing infrastructure concerns, Minister expressed concern about supply disruptions and instructed officers to proactively tackle low voltage issues. He inquired about the status of the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) works, and directed that local contractors be engaged to accelerate project execution. The Minister also reminded officials that Central funding for Phase II of RDSS will be sanctioned only after successful completion of Phase I.
Officials reported that the power supply is well aligned with demand, and emphasized that in nine out of 11 agriculture-focused districts, nine hours of continuous electricity is being reliably supplied to farming consumers.
Officials also briefed the Minister on the progress of the PM Surya Ghar scheme noting that Eluru leads in implementation, followed by Visakhapatnam, West Godavari, and East Godavari.

Delays in resolving complaints are not acceptable,' the DM said. Discom officials said maintenance teams have already been deployed and key vulnerable lines and transformers are being identified. 'We have been taking steps to strengthen weak points in the network. SCADA work under the RDSS project is progressing, and we are also replacing poles and cables in several localities,' said Vivek Kumar, superintending engineer of Paschimanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited, Noida. The meeting comes days after Uttar Pradesh power minister A K Sharma, in a separate review session, instructed authorities to ensure uninterrupted power supply in Noida. He also reviewed the progress of key infrastructure upgrades under various state and central schemes. Earlier this year, the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) approved a ₹97 crore allocation for Gautam Buddh Nagar for the 2025–26 financial year to bolster electricity infrastructure across the district. Additionally, under the ₹1,313 crore Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) of the central government, engineering firm L&T has been commissioned for SCADA-related work in Noida. Another implementing agency for the remaining components of the scheme is expected to be finalised this month. Officials said the RDSS will focus on building new substations and reinforcing existing distribution lines, while parallel projects will tackle the replacement of ageing transformers, poles, and overhead cables, particularly in Noida's older sectors and new developing zones where infrastructure has not kept pace with rapid urbanisation.

AP govt to revamp Bar Policy; new guidelines effective from Sept 1
Vijayawada: The state government is seriously contemplating a complete revamp of the existing bar policy. The new policy will come into force from Sept 1. The government has initiated negotiations with stakeholders and departments to fine-tune the revised policy. Sources indicated that the government is considering further relaxation of existing rules to facilitate the establishment of more bars across the state. The policy is also expected to promote the setting up of bars in tourism areas under liberalised conditions. Additionally, the feasibility of allowing relocation of existing bars from one area to another is being studied. With the current Bar Policy set to expire on Aug 31, the group of ministers (GoM) on excise policy convened a crucial meeting to deliberate on the framework of the upcoming Bar Policy. The meeting was conducted in hybrid mode. While excise minister Kollu Ravindra and energy minister Gottipati Ravikumar attended the meeting at the secretariat, civil supplies minister Nadendla Manohar, MSME minister Kondapalli Srinivas, and health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav participated virtually. Principal secretary (excise) Mukesh Kumar Meena briefed the GoM on representations received from key associations, including the AP State Wine Dealers Association, AP Star Hotels Association, and the AP Hotels Association. He outlined historical sales trends, previous bar disposal methods, and the financial implications of various proposed policy models, focusing on revenue impact and operational feasibility. Director of Prohibition and Excise Nishant Kumar delivered a detailed presentation on the current Bar Policy (2022–25). He discussed the license disposal system, annual license fees, and bar-to-population ratios. Currently, about 840 standalone bars and 50 establishments in star hotels and microbreweries are operating under the policy. It was noted that 44 bar licenses were not renewed during the current policy period. He also presented a comparative analysis of bar policies in Telangana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Kerala. Civil Supplies Minister Nadendla Manohar sought updates on the implementation of the current shop policy and its possible implications for bar operations. Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav recommended that the tourism department be consulted to strengthen tourism linkages in the new policy. MSME Minister Kondapalli Srinivas emphasized the need to encourage new entrepreneurs to enter the food and beverages sector. Energy minister Gottipati Ravikumar highlighted the growing need to consider bar relocations in light of expanding industrial corridors across the state. "The excise department will incorporate suggestions from the ministers to further refine the draft policy. A revised proposal will be prepared before the final Bar Policy is approved and notified," said a senior official. The meeting was also attended by Enforcement director Rahul Dev Sharma, additional commissioner M Deva Kumar, joint commissioners and other senior officials from the excise department. Andhra Pradesh Discoms seek ERC nod to collect true-up charges of ₹12,771 cr
The three power distribution companies (discoms) in the state have filed a petition before Andhra Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (APERC), seeking permission to collect ₹12,771 crore from consumers through true-up charges . The ERC released the notification asking the public to file their objections/suggestions on the petitions filed by the discoms. The Left parties have demanded that the govt immediately withdraw the proposal. According to the affidavit, SPDCL wants to collect ₹3,046 crore through true-up charges to recover the actual costs of power supplied from 2019 to 2024. APEPDCL has urged the commission to allow it to collect ₹7,790 crore, while APCPDCL wants to recover ₹1,935 crore. The discoms have been collecting fuel and power purchase cost adjustment (FPPCA) charges for the past three years. Recently, the distribution companies filed a petition before APERC seeking ratification of its decision to collect 40 paise per unit, which has been continuing for the past six months. While APERC, in Nov 2024, allowed the discoms to recover ₹9,412 crore through FPPCA charges , the discoms levied nearly ₹14,000 crore burden on the consumers in the last one year, citing old dues. However, energy minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar has made it clear that the govt has no plans to increase power tariff , adding that power tariff may be reduced in the coming days. He blamed the previous YSRCP govt for the discoms' move to collect the true-up and FPPCA charges. "The mismanagement and irregularities during the YSRCP regime forced discoms to recover the true-up and FPPCA charges from the consumer. The discoms have filed petitions to collect the dues pertaining to the YSRCP regime," Gottipati claimed. Dismissing the minister's allegations, CPI-M leaders V Srinivasa Rao and Ch Baburao said blaming the previous regime is only a "cover-up act" by the TDP-led NDA govt, and warned of agitations across the state if the discoms did not withdraw the true-up charges notice.
