Kerala stellar show in national school survey

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala clinched top spots in various categories in the NCERT's PARAKH Rashtriya Sarvekshan 2024 — formerly known as the National Achievement Survey — that assesses students of Classes III, VI and IX across the country in different subjects and competency areas. Kerala bagged the top spot among the states in Class VI category and was placed in the second and third spots in Class IX and Class III categories respectively. The survey also showed that the state's performance was better than the national average in Language, Mathematics, Science and Social Science across all three categories. Announcing the results of the survey here on Wednesday, General Education Minister V Sivankutty attributed the state's commendable performance to various initiatives undertaken by the government to strengthen public education. According to Director of General Education Shanavas S, the state is in the all-India second place after Punjab if the overall score across the three categories is taken into account. 'This is a significant growth from the overall 16th position that the state achieved in the previous edition of the survey in 2021,' he said. The survey assessed the educational standards of students in Language and Mathematics for Class III, Language, Mathematics and Science for Class VI and Language, Mathematics, Science and Social Science for Class IX. A total of 46,737 students from 6,644 schools in the state participated in the survey.

Union govt's assistance sought for setting up metro rail tech institute in Kochi

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala has sought the Centre's assistance for setting up the proposed Institute for Metro and Rail Technology (IMRT) in Kochi. The IMRT, to be established in collaboration with National Skill Development Corporation and Kochi Metro, will offer courses in metro rail technology. The proposal was made by Labour Minister V Sivankutty at the 'Kaushal Manthan' conclave organised by the Union Ministry of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship in Hyderabad on Monday. Sivankutty informed Union Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Jayant Chaudhary, that the Detailed Project Report for IMRT has beep prepared and the space has been allocated. The Centre's assistance will help fast-track the project that would generate huge employment opportunities for youth in the state. The minister also sought the Union government's assistance for the Indian Institute of Foreign Languages (IIFL) that the state has proposed to set up in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram. Assistance was also sought for developing the Digital University of Kerala's Centre of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence that aims to nurture next-generation talent. The state also made key recommendations at the conclave including continued support for the institutional framework created under the SANKALP programme. Sivankutty pointed out at the conclave that in the last four years, Central assistance to the state has been limited to PMKVY, SANKALP, PMNAPS AND STRIVE schemes. Emphasising the constitutional spirit of cooperative federalism, he urged equitable treatment of all states, irrespective of political alignment.
