Phillies Surprisingly Named No. 1 Suitor for Top Trade Deadline Slugger

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The trade deadline is fast approaching, and the Philadelphia Phillies are still waiting to get in on the action. In a high-pressure season, the Phillies have mostly played good baseball. But you'd be hard pressed to call them the favorites in the National League right now, and several other contenders have already made moves. The top needs many have identified for the Phillies throughout the summer have been center field and bullpen. But with Alec Bohm on the injured list, third base has emerged late in the game as a sneaky spot to upgrade. PHOENIX, ARIZONA - JULY 20: Eugenio Suarez #28 of the Arizona Diamondbacks celebrates with third base coach Shaun Larkin #88 after hitting a solo home run against the St. Louis Cardinals during the third inning at Chase Field on July 20, 2025 in Phoenix, Arizona. MoreThere's only one third baseman worth pursuing for the Phillies: Arizona Diamondbacks impending free agent slugger Eugenio Suárez. Competition will be stiff, though, if the Phillies want in on the action. However, on Sunday, Thomas Harrigan of labeled the Phillies as the No. 1 prospective suitor for Suárez, purely in terms of need. "Why are the Phillies atop this list? Because when you look at the way this roster is constructed, arguably no team is under more pressure to win now than Philadelphia," wrote Harrigan. "The Phillies got close with a World Series appearance in 2022, but they've taken a step back since then. Bryce Harper, Zack Wheeler, Trea Turner, Nick Castellanos and Aaron Nola are all signed beyond 2025, but each is 32 or older. So are Kyle Schwarber and J.T. Realmuto, both of whom are in the final year of their contracts." Harrigan listed six other teams as fits: in descending order, the Milwaukee Brewers, Seattle Mariners, Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, Detroit Tigers, and Houston Astros. With only four days to go before the Thursday deadline, we'll soon know if the Phillies want Suárez as badly as many now seem to think they should. MLB Rumors: Cardinals Could Move Eight-Time All-Star Before Trade Deadline

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The third base market could get a major shakeup ahead of the MLB trade deadline if the St. Louis Cardinals are able to find common ground regarding Nolan Arenado. The eight-time All-Star was the subject of major trade rumors involving a few teams during the offseason. Teams like the Houston Astros and Boston Red Sox reportedly had varying levels of interest in making a deal with St. Louis. Ultimately, Arenado stayed up. That could change ahead of Thursday's MLB trade deadline, and if that does happen, it could have a major impact on the market. DENVER, COLORADO - JULY 22: Nolan Arenado #28 of the St. Louis Cardinals hits into a fourth inning run-scoring ground out against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field on July 22, 2025 in Denver, Colorado.... (Photo by) More Mark Feinsand said there's renewed interest in Arenado among teams looking for third-base help, and St. Louis could trade him before the buzzer. This seems to either be a change of course or counter to past reporting, as a previous report indicated the Cardinals planned to keep Arenado. Regardless, Feinsand offers one very important caveat: "The Cardinals will have to get approval from Arenado, who possesses a full no-trade clause and can veto any trade -- which he did in December after the Cardinals and Astros had agreed to a trade to send the eight-time All-Star to Houston." Quite frankly, it's hard to conceptualize what sort of deal it would take to get an Arenado deal done. The 34-year-old is a long way from the player who was a perennial All-Star in Colorado. Arenado has been on an undeniable downturn, especially if you take out his 2022 season in which he finished third in MVP voting. His .237 batting average would be a career low, as would his .669 OPS, which is not just a sharp drop-off from his career mark (.847) but also a pretty significant 50-point drop from last year -- which was his career-worst until that point. Then there's the contract. He's got two years left after this one on an eight-year, $260 million deal he signed with Colorado. As Feinsand notes, the Rockies are paying some of the deferred money, and the Cardinals could also help pay off some of the deal. Even so, that no-trade protection looms large, meaning teams would really have to thread the needle to get something done. Perhaps the chance to play meaningful baseball would open up Arenado's market. The Cardinals were a painfully mediocre 54-53, 3 1/2 games out of National League wild-card contention entering Monday. MLB trade deadline: Live updates, news, transactions, rumors as Royals reportedly extend Seth Lugo, Yankees add Rosario, McMahon

The 2025 MLB trade deadline is just around the corner, and some teams are already making major moves. The Arizona Diamondbacks unofficially kicked things off last week by trading first baseman Josh Naylor to the Seattle Mariners, and several teams added their hats to the ring over the weekend. The Yankees made two acquisitions in Ryan McMahon and Ahmed Rosario, while the Mets traded for Gregory Soto. The action should continue in the coming days as MLB's contenders scramble to add talent with the playoffs two months away. There aren't any superstars expected to be on the move in this deadline, but every contender has a hole to fill. No team is running away from the field in the standings, which means some of teams will likely need to do something to stand out. The deadline officially hits on Thursday at 6 p.m. ET. After that, the only way teams can add a player to their roster is calling up minor leaguers or signing free agents, and any player who isn't in the organization by the end of August is ineligible for the postseason.
