Telegraph28-07-2025
Two women have died and a teenage girl has been injured in a three-vehicle crash in the Scottish Highlands.
The collision, which happened at around 3pm on Monday, involved two cars and a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) on the A96 at the junction of Kingloss Road in Forres, Moray, Police Scotland said.
The two women, aged 48 and 56, who were travelling in a black Vauxhall Mokka, died at the scene, officers said.
A 15-year-old girl, who was a passenger in the Vauxhall, was airlifted to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary where she is being treated for her injuries.
The driver of the HGV and occupants of a VW Golf were uninjured, the force confirmed.
Detectives said the A96 at Forres was set to remain closed for several hours and motorists were urged to avoid the area.
Sergeant Lesley Morrison at Road Policing in Elgin said: 'We would like to speak to anyone who witnessed this tragic crash or anyone who has dashcam footage of it.'

Waterworld lifeguards used CPR in desperate battle to save girl, 4, who died after falling unconscious in lagoon

WATERWORLD lifeguards used CPR in a desperate attempt to save a four-year-old girl who died after falling unconscious in a lagoon. The girl was treated poolside before being raced to hospital but the girl tragically died a short while later. 1 Police were called to Waterworld in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, yesterday at around 4:20pm to reports of a four-year-old girl in critical condition. Lifeguards, staff and paramedics treated the girl at the poolside in the Lagoon area of the aqua park before she was taken to hospital. Despite the desperate efforts of hospital staff, the four-year-old tragically died a short while later. The child's family have been informed of the tragedy and are being supported by specially-trained officers, Staffordshire Police said. A spokesperson for Waterworld say they will remained closed today "out of respect for the young girl's family". Detective Chief Inspector Lucy Maskew said: "Our thoughts are with the family at this terribly sad time. "We are now making enquiries and looking to establish the circumstances of the incident. "We would ask that members of the public avoid speculating in these early stages of the investigation and allow the family to grieve." Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has knowledge of it is asked to call the police. A Waterworld spokesperson said on social media: "Waterworld is deeply saddened to confirm that a fatal incident occurred at 4:15pm on Monday, August 4th, in the Lagoon area of the Aqua Park. "A girl of 4 years old was found unconscious and treated on poolside by our lifeguard & management teams on site." They added that they immediately provided CPR and called the emergency services while all other visitors were quietly asked to leave. "All our thoughts are with her family and loved ones during these extremely difficult times." The water park, which opened in 1989, attracts around 400,000 visitors each year and boasts three pools and 20 slides.

'Overstretched' police force hit with £31.5m overtime bill

The overtime bill for Scotland's police officers and staff has climbed above an average of £85,000 per day, amid warnings of a 'chronically overstretched' force. A fall in rank-and-file numbers and a rise in police responsibilities have been blamed for the huge costs. New figures published in 1919 Magazine on Tuesday show that £28.15m was spent on overtime for officers in 2024/25, plus an additional £3.4m for police staff – a combined 10% rise on the previous year. Although this is down on 2022/23, when there was a major policing operation following the death of the Queen, there are concerns about the bill for the current year given the demands of President Donald Trump's recent visit to Scotland and forthcoming events like the sold-out Oasis reunion shows at Murrayfield Stadium. Police Scotland has praised officers and described the nature of policing as 'unpredictable', with overtime a 'flexible mechanism' used by the force. But the Scottish Police Federation (SPF) warned that the costs are a 'direct consequence' of the 'chronic shortage of police officers across the country'. SPF general secretary David Kennedy said: 'As demand on policing continues to increase – whether through major events, public safety operations, or everyday calls for service – there simply are not enough officers to meet the workload within normal working hours. 'The reality is that overtime is no longer a contingency – it has become a necessity to maintain even the most basic levels of public safety. This is unsustainable, both financially and in terms of officer wellbeing. 'Officers are regularly being asked to sacrifice their rest days, family time, and personal health to plug gaps caused by years of underinvestment in policing. 'We cannot continue to rely on a shrinking workforce to deliver a growing remit. 'The rising cost of overtime is not a budget management issue – it is a symptom of a wider crisis in police numbers that must be addressed urgently through meaningful investment in recruitment, retention, and support for serving officers.' STV News President Donald Trump's recent visit to Scotland is likely to see police overtime bill soar even further over 2025/2026 The data, obtained by 1919 through a freedom of information request, shows that £42,689,162 was spent on officers' overtime in 2022/23 – the year the Queen died – falling to £25,305,080 a year later and rising again to £28,150,447 in the most recent financial year. On top of that, overtime paid to police staff totalled £11.24m over the three-year period, with the figures broadly similar in 2023/24 and 2024/25. Periods of sickness, maternity leave, and annual leave are not included. Scottish Labour justice spokesperson Pauline McNeill told 1919: 'These eyewatering figures lay bare the immense pressure Police Scotland is under. 'Police officer numbers have collapsed over recent years and big events have piled pressure onto remaining officers. 'There is no evidence that the Scottish Government is taking any serious steps to address this, therefore this is likely to continue. 'Increasing reliance on overtime is costing Police Scotland thousands of pounds a day and exhausting police officers. 'Police officers cannot keep being forced to go above and beyond to paper over the cracks of SNP failure – the SNP must work with Police Scotland to ensure it has the officers it needs to keep our communities safe.' iStock A fall in rank-and-file numbers and a rise in police responsibilities have been blamed for the huge costs. Scottish Liberal Democrat justice spokesperson Liam McArthur added: 'SNP ministers pushed through the creation of a single national force with the promise of significant cost savings which could be invested elsewhere in the service. 'Instead we have seen falling officer numbers, police counters closing and officers run ragged. 'The cases that officers are being called to attend are increasingly complex and time consuming. 'One solution we have proposed to provide mental health workers to work alongside the police and help people in need. 'Officers should not be asked to work beyond their limits day after day. 'After so many years of worsening conditions, it will be hard work for the Justice Secretary to win back trust and convince officers she is in their corner.' While recruitment and deployment are operational matters for the chief constable, a Scottish Government spokesperson said: 'We are investing a record £1.64bn for policing this year, and our continued investment enabled Police Scotland to take on more recruits in the last financial year than at any time since 2013, with further intakes planned throughout 2025. 'Scotland continues to have more police officers per capita than England and Wales and recorded crime has fallen by more than half since 1991.' Footy club mourns 'devastating loss' of beloved player and young father of four after he went missing

A shattered suburban footy club is mourning the 'devastating loss' of one of their own after he died in tragic circumstances. Kyle Leonard, 29, was a popular figure at the La Perouse Panthers in Sydney 's south-east - and the father of four has been fondly remembered for his 'infectious smile and sharp sense of humour'. 'Kyle was a valued member of our senior men's squad and proudly represented La Perouse in many A Grade games,' a statement from the club read. 'He remained part of the squad this year, though he didn't take the field, choosing instead to prioritise his growing family with the recent birth of his twins. 'Those who knew Kyle were fortunate to be surrounded by his calm presence, infectious smile and sharp sense of humour. 'He had a rare gift for making everyone feel like his best mate. The La Perouse Panthers said 'Kyle will be missed more than words can say' and added 'see you in the Dreamtime' 'Kyle was a proud and devoted father to his four beautiful children, Lamarni, Khoen, Lakarri and baby Kyle, whom he shared with his incredible fiancée, Amanda. 'To Amanda and the extended family, we are deeply sorry for this sudden and heartbreaking loss. Kyle will be missed more than words can say. 'Please know you are not alone. We mourn with you, we hold you close in our hearts, and we are here to support you in every way we can. 'See you in the Dreamtime, Kyle.' Coogee Randwick Wombats Rugby League - who Leonard also played for - paid their respects on Facebook. Both the La Perouse and Coogee Randwick clubs will wear black armbands this week, with a moment's silence to be observed in honour of Leonard. He also enjoyed a stint with the Alexandria Rovers, who labelled him 'an absolute warrior on the field and one of the kindest off the field.' It is understood Leonard went missing just before 5am on August 2 from a Matraville address, with immediate concerns for his welfare. NSW Police appealed to the public for assistance to locate Leonard, whose body was later discovered. A GoFundMe page has been established to help the family, with almost $50,000 raised in just two days.
