Malaysia Well-Placed To Become Key Player In Global Edutourism Sector

Barnama29-05-2025
KUALA LUMPUR, May 29 (Bernama) -- Malaysia is well-placed to become a key player in the global edutourism sector, leveraging its strengths in education, cultural diversity, and affordability to attract international students, said Datuk Lau Wai Cheng, president of the National Association of Private Educational Institutions (NAPEI).
In a statement, Lau said edutourism, the convergence of education and tourism, offers Malaysia a timely opportunity to diversify its visitor economy while highlighting the nation's educational strengths.
"As demand for experiential travel grows globally, international students and families are increasingly seeking programmes that offer more than classroom instruction,' he said.
He noted that the country's affordability, cultural diversity and English-speaking environment make it well-suited to capitalise on the growing shift towards edutourism, aligning with Visit Malaysia 2026 by providing learners with enriching experiences that blend education, culture and personal development.
Lau added that Malaysia has been able to take the lead in delivering immersive learning experiences that are relevant, inclusive and globally competitive, with strong partnerships, supportive policy frameworks and institutional readiness.
'We are not simply promoting programs through edutourism. We are helping to build mutual understanding, empower communities and shape a future where education extends beyond borders and leaves a lasting impact,' he said.
On NAPEI's role, Lau explained that for over three decades, the association has played a pivotal role in enhancing the private education ecosystem and its global presence.
By engaging with its member institutions, the association has promoted high standards in academic delivery and supported initiatives that have expanded the global reach of Malaysian education, he said.
He noted that NAPEI members have offered short courses for students seeking to improve their English proficiency while immersing themselves in Malaysian culture, incorporating cultural and heritage experiences, collaborations with local schools, homestays with local families, sports tourism, eco- and nature-based activities, as well as modules aligned with Sustainable Development Goals.

JS-SEZ draws RM1.34bil in investment commitments from 5 S'pore companies

Johor menteri besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi said 70 companies from countries such as Singapore, China, Germany, the UK and the Netherlands have expressed interest in investing in the JS-SEZ. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Johor has secured RM1.34 billion in investment commitments from five Singapore-based companies under the Johor-Singapore special economic zone (JS-SEZ), says menteri besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi. An additional RM78 million in potential investments is under negotiation as part of the second phase, he said. Onn Hafiz said these investments were facilitated by the Johor branch of the Malaysian Investment Facilitation Centre, which helps coordinate and speed up strategic investment processes in the state. 'To date, 70 companies from countries including Singapore, China, Germany, the UK, and the Netherlands, as well as local investors, have expressed interest in investing in the JS-SEZ,' Bernama quoted him as saying during his official visit to Singapore as the 82nd recipient of the Lee Kuan Yew Exchange Fellowship. He also met with Singapore's deputy prime minister and minister for trade and industry Gan Kim Yong to strengthen economic ties and discuss the implementation of the JS-SEZ. Onn Hafiz said among the topics discussed were establishing a free trade zone within the JS-SEZ, improving cross-border movement of goods and talent, and developing a second Rapid Transit System link on Johor's western side. He said they also discussed addressing the rising cost of living, infrastructure improvements, and a more efficient transport system. He emphasised Johor's readiness to adopt progressive policies that promote growth and ensure real benefits for the people, and reaffirmed the importance of strong cooperation between Johor, Malaysia and Singapore. 'I believe the strategic cooperation between Johor, Malaysia and Singapore must continue to be strengthened to realise a development agenda that is inclusive, equitable and sustainable, so that no one is left behind,' he said. JS-SEZ was formally established in January through an agreement between Malaysia and Singapore to boost economic connectivity between the state and the republic. It aims to attract 100 projects worth RM100 billion and create about 100,000 jobs in high-value sectors such as manufacturing, digital economy, logistics, clean energy, and tourism over the next decade.

Govt boosts cost of living aid with SARA and fuel subsidies

PUTRAJAYA: The government is ramping up initiatives to alleviate the rising cost of living, focusing on direct aid and clear public communication, according to Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. Key measures include the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) cash assistance of RM100 for Malaysians aged 18 and above, alongside targeted fuel subsidies for RON95 petrol. 'Over RM2 billion has been allocated for SARA, allowing purchases at 4,100 outlets nationwide. Unused funds by 2026 will be redirected to aid other needy groups,' Fahmi stated during the Communications Ministry's monthly assembly. Deputy Minister Teo Nie Ching and secretary-general Datuk Seri Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa were also present. Addressing fuel subsidies, Fahmi clarified that citizens benefit more than perceived. 'Eligible Malaysians pay RM1.99 per litre, while non-citizens face market rates of RM2.50 to RM2.60. The real saving exceeds 50 sen per litre, not just six sen,' he explained. Fahmi also countered negative views on Malaysia's investment climate, highlighting operational factories from previously planned projects. He urged RTM and Bernama to collaborate with MIDA to ensure accurate investment data reaches the public. - Bernama

KUALA TERENGGANU: A total of 73,051 agricultural holdings were recorded in Terengganu for the 2023 reference year, according to State Agriculture, Agro-Based Industry, Food Security and Commodities Committee chairman Datuk Dr Azman Ibrahim. He revealed that 99.1% or 72,367 were individual holdings, while the remaining 0.9% or 684 were under organisations. The crop sub-sector dominated with 58,435 holdings, followed by livestock (12,018), capture fisheries (3,013), aquaculture (988), and logging and forestry (195). 'Terengganu is the largest contributor to the livestock sub-sector, accounting for 25.7% of the total 46,781 agricultural holdings nationwide,' said Dr Azman, citing the 2024 Agriculture Census by the Department of Statistics Malaysia. The state also recorded 227,000 hectares of cultivated land, with oil palm leading in both cultivated and harvested areas, followed by rubber and padi. The crop sub-sector generated RM4.03 billion in sales, while livestock contributed RM403.72 million, fisheries RM438.89 million, aquaculture RM251.54 million, and forestry RM256.87 million. 'The agricultural sector in Terengganu recorded a total revenue of RM5.39 billion, reflecting its significant economic impact,' he added. The census data will aid in policy-making and development strategies to enhance food security and sector competitiveness. Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin, also present at the event, emphasised that an agricultural holding refers to any entity managing agricultural activities, regardless of land size or ownership. - Bernama
