Disgraced BBC presenter Jermaine Jenas has admitted that he wanted to stay with his ex-wife Ellie Penfold and "be unhappy for the rest of [his] life" before she ended their marriage earlier this year.
The former Premier League midfielder, who presented The One Show and worked as a pundit on Match of The Day, had his contract terminated by the BBC in August last year, after it was revealed he had sent inappropriate texts to two female employees at the corporation.
Jenas later apologised for his "wildly inappropriate" and "self-destructive" behaviour and admitted that his wife - whom he married in 2011 and with whom he shares two children - was "absolutely raging" after news of his sacking broke.
Having reportedly kicked the ex-Newcastle and Tottenham Hotspur player out of their bedroom, Penfold announced in March that the couple had gone their separate ways after 16 years together.
In a statement posted on social media, she wrote: "I never imagined I would have to share something so personal with the public, but given the situation, I feel it's necessary.
"After 16 years together and 4 wonderful children, Jermaine and I have decided to part ways. We will remain friends and continue to co-parent. We kindly ask that you respect our children's privacy during this challenging time. Thank you, Ellie."

Jenas - who had been tipped to succeed Gary Lineker as host of Match of the Day before the texting scandal emerged - has now broken his silence over his marriage ending, revealing that he had been "prepared to be unhappy" and stay with his wife but she had decided otherwise.
"It was her decision and one that I had to accept," he told the Filthy Fellas podcast. "If it was up to me - and I think a lot of men are like this - I'd probably be prepared to be unhappy for the rest of my life if [it meant] I had my kids in it.
"It's a man thing. If I wake up with my kids everyday, I'm quite happy to sacrifice the happiness. The reality is, we were both in a position where we like: 'Are we really happy?'
"From her side of things, she's probably ran the course much more than me. But I was much more happy to go: 'I'll be unhappy if I can stay in this house with you and these kids'. But it wasn't to be for her and we went our separate ways.
"She has understood the scenario that we've been in as a family. Kids first is our motto. We have to be the best parents we can possibly be. So I've been spending so much time at home."
The former England international added that their marriage has become "more of a friendship" and came to an end for more reasons than just the texting scandal.
"Not loads has changed really, it's just mine and her relationship has gone into more of a friendship than a relationship," he continued.
"I do believe there is going to come a moment where I'm sat in my apartment one day and be like: 'This is mad. I had my whole family around me every single day. I'm not hearing that pitter patter of feet'.
"That's going to be the tough side of it. But that's part of dealing with the situation. The reality is, me and my wife didn't split up because I sent some text messages to some people at work. We had issues for a period of time and it all comes to a head.

"Eventually, you make a decision to say, as adults, we will be better parents for our children if we remain friends. We had 16 amazing years together. She's a great woman."

Mathew Horne, who played Gavin Shipman in the hit BBC comedy series Gavin and Stacey, was giving an In Conversation With performance when he received the sad news Mathew Horne was visibly emotional as he revealed to audiences that he'd just learned of a Gavin and Stacey crew member's death. Earlier on... we had a driver on the finale called Rob and he was in his early 40s... and I found out via the WhatsApp group earlier that he has passed away and I got slightly distracted there." He added: "It's really, really sad. I got distracted by losing Rob. He was a really lovely guy and he's left a four-year-old behind and that is really, really, really sad." Horne went on to explain how the entire cast and crew had formed strong bonds after nearly two decades of working together, reports the Express. He shared: "In 2019 before the Christmas special - part one of the finale if you like - aired, I lost my mother and Alison [Stedman, who played his onscreen mother Pam], really stepped up and she became my surrogate mother off screen as well. "Whenever she texts me even now she signs it 'Mum'. And that is cool. That is so beautiful. And she says 'How are you, my little prince?' It means the world to me.'" The final episode of Gavin and Stacey, which aired on Christmas Day last year, attracted a whopping 19.1 million viewers. The series, first introduced in 2007 by creators James Corden and Ruth Jones, ended with the long-awaited confession of love between Smithy and Nessa, who finally tied the knot despite several obstacles along the way. There has, however, been talk of potential spin-offs with other characters such as Dawn and Pete, played by Julia Davis and Adrian Scarborough respectively, keeping the spirit of Gavin and Stacey alive.

The ex-Liverpool and England striker enjoyed a brilliant week at Goodwood's festival of horse racing, with Seagulls Eleven winning for an ownership group led by his former teammate James Milner Liverpool legend Michael Owen has sparked a fashion debate by not wearing socks to Goodwood races. The former star footballer was at the track this week to cheer on horses trained by the boss of his Manor House Stables, Hugo Palmer. And they were in luck on Friday, when Seagulls Eleven (11-4) carried the colours of a group of Brighton FC players to victory in the Group Three Bonhams Thoroughbred Stakes. But Owen was not just talking horses during the five-day festival of racing, as his footwear choice was up for discussion. "He's not wearing socks. He should have his feet cut off and shouldn't be allowed on the racecourse!" smiled Palmer on Racing TV, when Owen sported a pair of beige shoes earlier on in the week. "I was stood here not knowing whether to laugh or cry. Am I right or wrong?!" Owen responded. After seeing the clip, racing fans had their say on the issue, which caused much debate during Royal Ascot week. "Hey who cares, Michael looks very smart, good on ya!" one wrote on social media. "You don't wear socks with loafers. Good job you listened to your daughter," another added. But a third posted an unhappy emoji, writing: "No socks!!!" Men arriving without socks at the royal meeting in Berkshire were told that they had to buy them if they did not have any. Royal Enclosure rules state that they must wear a jacket, collared shirt, tie and socks, which should be covering the ankle. However the dress code for Goodwood is not quite as strict, with the website stating 'gentlemen (and boys aged 16 and over) are required to wear a suit jacket, long sleeved collared shirt and a tie, along with full-length trousers to all 19 racedays' in its premier Richmond enclosure. Owen picked a pair of blue suede shoes for Friday, when Seagulls Eleven struck for a team of owners led by his friend James Milner. Before the interview, when he told of his pride in the horse, presenter Lydia Hislop said: "We are just chatting about sock-gate from the other day when Hugo Palmer pointed out to Michael Owen that you should have your feet cut off if you didn't wear socks with shoes!" Owen said: "That's what he said didn't he and apparently it went a bit viral. I'm not sure whether it was my dance before you panned up for the reveal. You can see whose advice I have listened to, I have gone no socks again with a blue suede shoe today." Palmer's stable made it a memorable afternoon when Ardisia secured the Hawes and Curtis Nursery Handicap at odds of 20-1. The double came hot on the heels of two Ascot wins at Group Three level last Saturday, via Fitzella (Sodexo Live! Princess Margaret Stakes, 6f) and Cheshire Dancer (Longines Valiant Stakes, 1m). "That's three Group winners in six days for the yard so we are absolutely thrilled," Owen added. "I'm immensely proud of the team. "Everyone works tirelessly hard for moments like this. It starts with me having a friend James Milner, an old teammate of mine and he went to Brighton and I revved him up to buy a horse, another and another - now they have four with us and we have had a lot of success with them."
