'Disbelief' over Campher's five from five haul
Ireland international Curtis Campher said his Munster Reds team-mates were "in shock" as he became the first male cricketer to take five wickets from five balls in a professional game.
The 26-year-old all-rounder, who finished with figures of 5-16, produced the spectacular spell in his side's 100-run Inter-Provincial T20 Trophy win over the North-West Warriors in Dublin on Thursday.

"I think a bit of disbelief, to be honest," he said of the reaction.
"It's one of those things that you don't really think is going to happen or can happen and it just did.
"It was just kind of one of those things where everyone else was in shock. I was laughing, PJ (Moor) and a few other guys were also laughing in the team, so it was kind of just one of those moments where it's just comical, really, but a disbelief."
Campher previously took four wickets from four balls for Ireland against the Netherlands in the 2021 T20 World Cup.
He was captaining the Reds on Thursday and produced the first two wickets of his haul in the 12th over before resuming bowling duties in the 14th to finish off his piece of cricketing history.

He believes both the break and his duties as skipper distracted from the feat.
"I was worried about the next over and who was bowling and the rate and kind of managing the game for a bit, so then I didn't really realise that I was on a hat-trick.
"When I got the hat-trick, I was like, 'listen, there's a new batter in here, I've got to try and hit four from four again'.
"I managed to nick it off and then when I knew it was a left-hander on strike, so I thought round the wicket and just try and hit the stumps. It got a little bit of nip and down the hill she went."

The performance made plenty of headlines throughout the game with Campher pleased to raise the profile of domestic cricket in Ireland.
"I think anytime you can grow the game in Ireland, it's really, really cool," he added.
"I think the guys in the national team have really pushed that too. You have the front-runners like Kevin [O'Brien] and Stirlo [Paul Stirling], guys that have really pushed the game forward and then hopefully we can pass on the baton to us and we can kind of try to grow the game more on the Irish soil."
Personally, however, Campher feels his place in the history books will take some time to sink in.

"I think maybe when I retire, I think that might be a moment where I look back and, if I have a few kids, I might say, 'look, this is what I used to do and this is what I did'.
"That's quite a cool moment. I think maybe when I'm finished playing in a couple of years' time, I might look back and be like, that's really cool to have under the belt, for sure.
"But I think for now, it's kind of just business as usual and kind of back to training."

1 Thing Stopping Chiefs' 'Explosive Element' Returning
1 Thing Stopping Chiefs' 'Explosive Element' Returning originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Kansas City Chiefs will begin the 2025 season with more questions than answers surrounding their roster, with the offensive line at the center of the discussion. Advertisement With Jaylon Moore, Josh Simmons, and Kingsley Suamataia all set to try their hand on the left side of the line, Patrick Mahomes' protection is going to feel a whole lot different than it did last is a good thing. There has been talk all throughout OTAs and minicamp that the Chiefs want to get their deep ball back in the offense, but that can only happen if Mahomes has time to throw. So, for CBS Sports, in naming the most important non-quarterback for the Chiefs, the publication has landed on Moore and Simmons. "The Chiefs offensive line fell apart last year," CBS Sports writes. "They signed Moore to provide insurance at left tackle and had Simmons fall into their lap in the draft. They badly need one of them to play well enough that Patrick Mahomes isn't constantly looking over his shoulder, and can finally tap into the explosive element of the offense the team has been missing over the last two years." Advertisement Darren Yamashita-Imagn Images Given how easily accessible Mahomes was to the Philadelphia Eagles' defensive front in the Super Bowl, naturally, every other team will look at that blueprint and try to replicate it in 2025. Hence why the need for either Moore or Simmons to solidify that left tackle spot is crucial, so too Suamataia who is being shifted inside to left guard. Training camp will be our first look at the new protection, and while we won't be jumping to any conclusions, it will give a good indication of what we could expect in the regular season. Many are doubting the Chiefs this season, with the offensive line issues being the big reason why, and the only way to ease those fears is for the unit to play well with real bullets flying. Advertisement If the Chiefs are to avenge the Super Bowl loss, the offensive line is going to have to pull its weight. If it does, Kansas City will be in business, but if it can't, then who knows what the 2025 season will look like for the defending AFC champs. 'No need to complain' – German football legend urges Marc-Andre Ter Stegen to leave Barcelona
Much has been made of Marc-Andre Ter Stegen's situation at Barcelona over the last few weeks, with the club captain having been replaced as starting goalkeeper for the 2025-26 season. Joan Garcia and Wojciech Szczesny are Hansi Flick's options going forward, which means that the German is in a tricky situation. Flick told Ter Stegen last week that he will almost certainly not play for Barcelona next season, but despite this, the 33-year-old is determined to stay and force his way into contention. The club want him to leave, but he is under no obligation to seek an exit, given that his contract runs until 2028. Advertisement Ter Stegen has options to leave, and according to German football legend Lothar Matthaus, he should take one of them, as he told Bild (via MD). 'He has to leave, he won't play there again. I understand Ter Stegen. He has played well, he has been captain and he has his life in Barcelona. But he has to accept it. Barcelona have other ideas, other plans. 'These are decisions that must be accepted. There is no need to complain, it is part of football. It is not an isolated incident. It's not Hansi Flick, it's Barcelona. And nothing is bigger than the club, and that also applies to Barcelona.' Image viaAdvertisement Ter Stegen has a big decision to make It must remembered that a World Cup year has now started, with the next tournament taking place in North America next summer. As things stand, Ter Stegen will be Germany's starter, but that could change if he sidelined for the entirety of the 2025-26 season. Barcelona are hoping that Ter Stegen relents once the gravity of that situation kicks in, but for now, he is still looking to remain at the club he joined over a decade ago. However, that stance could change in the coming weeks.

Contingency plans unclear for 2026 World Cup wildfire smoke risks
While some organizations have published clear air quality thresholds or contingency protocols for wildfire smoke, FIFA's plans remain unclear less than a year out from the 2026 World Cup. A day after Toronto's air quality was among the worst in the world, the organizing committee for the World Cup in Canada declined to reveal guidelines for postponement or air-quality-related contingencies with FIFA. No policies are posted publicly. The World Cup will run from June 11 to July 19, 2026. Canada will stage 13 games — seven in Vancouver and six in Toronto. The Air Quality Health Index rating for Toronto was over 10, or 'very high risk,' on Monday morning, dropping to a 'high risk' rating of 8 by late afternoon. In the CFL, meanwhile, games can't be played when the AQHI surpasses a threshold of seven, according to an agreement between the league and its players. CFL stadiums are also equipped with air-quality sensors to provide real-time readings. The CFL postponed the Saskatchewan Roughriders-Calgary Stampeders game in Regina from Friday night to Saturday afternoon this past weekend due to air quality issues, as wildfires from northern Saskatchewan pushed the AQHI above 10. Many minor soccer associations in Canada also recommend delaying or rescheduling games if the AQHI is 7 or higher. Dr. Andrew Halayko, a professor of physiology and pathophysiology at the University of Manitoba, calls anything above 10 a 'no-brainer' for postponing sporting events. He also believes sporting events on days when the AQHI rises higher than 7 should be rescheduled due to health concerns. Halayko adds that while people should be able to make their own health decisions, sometimes the general population needs guidance. This report by The Canadian Press was first published July 15, 2025.
