'Disbelief' over Campher's five from five haul

Ireland international Curtis Campher was playing for Munster Reds when he took five wickets from five deliveries [Getty Images] Ireland international Curtis Campher said his Munster Reds team-mates were "in shock" as he became the first male cricketer to take five wickets from five balls in a professional game. The 26-year-old all-rounder, who finished with figures of 5-16, produced the spectacular spell in his side's 100-run Inter-Provincial T20 Trophy win over the North-West Warriors in Dublin on Thursday. Advertisement "I think a bit of disbelief, to be honest," he said of the reaction. "It's one of those things that you don't really think is going to happen or can happen and it just did. "It was just kind of one of those things where everyone else was in shock. I was laughing, PJ (Moor) and a few other guys were also laughing in the team, so it was kind of just one of those moments where it's just comical, really, but a disbelief." Campher previously took four wickets from four balls for Ireland against the Netherlands in the 2021 T20 World Cup. He was captaining the Reds on Thursday and produced the first two wickets of his haul in the 12th over before resuming bowling duties in the 14th to finish off his piece of cricketing history. Advertisement He believes both the break and his duties as skipper distracted from the feat. "I was worried about the next over and who was bowling and the rate and kind of managing the game for a bit, so then I didn't really realise that I was on a hat-trick. "When I got the hat-trick, I was like, 'listen, there's a new batter in here, I've got to try and hit four from four again'. "I managed to nick it off and then when I knew it was a left-hander on strike, so I thought round the wicket and just try and hit the stumps. It got a little bit of nip and down the hill she went." Advertisement The performance made plenty of headlines throughout the game with Campher pleased to raise the profile of domestic cricket in Ireland. "I think anytime you can grow the game in Ireland, it's really, really cool," he added. "I think the guys in the national team have really pushed that too. You have the front-runners like Kevin [O'Brien] and Stirlo [Paul Stirling], guys that have really pushed the game forward and then hopefully we can pass on the baton to us and we can kind of try to grow the game more on the Irish soil." Personally, however, Campher feels his place in the history books will take some time to sink in. Advertisement "I think maybe when I retire, I think that might be a moment where I look back and, if I have a few kids, I might say, 'look, this is what I used to do and this is what I did'. "That's quite a cool moment. I think maybe when I'm finished playing in a couple of years' time, I might look back and be like, that's really cool to have under the belt, for sure. "But I think for now, it's kind of just business as usual and kind of back to training."

WATCH: Irish cricketer Curtis Campher creates history, takes 5 wickets in 5 deliveries

Ireland allrounder Curtis Campher created history when he became the first player in men's professional cricketer to take five wickets in as many balls during his side Munster Reds' win over North-West Warriors in an Inter-Provincial T20 Trophy match on Thursday. However, he is not the only player to achieve this feat with Zimbabwe Women all-rounder Kelis Ndhlovu doing it first when she took five wickets in five balls for Zimbabwe U-19 against Eagles Women in a domestic T20 tournament in 2024. Campher, meanwhile, is also part of an elite list of bowlers who has taken 4 wickets in 4 balls in T20 internationals. Wow!! Five wickets in five balls. Curtis Campher doing Curtis Campher things.#ICYMI #Cricket #5in5 — Cricket Ireland (@cricketireland) July 11, 2025 The 26-year-old Munster Reds captain and right-arm pacer took his five wickets across his second and third overs as North-West Warriors slumped from 87 for 5 to 88 all out in 13.3 overs while chasing 189. He finished with 5 for 16 from 2.3 overs at the Pembroke Cricket Club, Sandymount, Dublin. Jared Wilson, the first of the five wickets, was out off the penultimate delivery of the 12th over when Campher got the ball to swing in and crash into off stump. Next ball, Graham Hume was trapped lbw off another inswinger. That put Campher on a hat-trick at the start of his next over, and it came when Andy McBrine was dismissed on the first ball of the 14th over. His next two balls got rid of No. 10 Robbie Millar (0) and No. 11 Josh Wilson (0) to complete his five wicket haul. PTI Earlier, Munster Reds had scored 188 for 7 in 20 overs after electing to bat. 'Performances aside, it has been really good just to be around the boys. When you get injured, it's a bit of a dark place, when you get into the gym and stuff like that. So it has been really nice, just been treated with the weather too. So I have been really enjoying myself and putting pressure on myself to do well and it has kind of made me work for the last little bit,' Campher said as per ESPNCricinfo. He has played seven Tests, 43 ODIs and 61 T20Is since making debut for Ireland in 2020.

Ireland's Curtis Campher makes history by taking five wickets in five balls

Ireland's Curtis Campher has made history by becoming the first male player to take five wickets from five balls in a professional match. The 26-year-old achieved the feat, which was spread across to separate overs, while in action for the Munster Reds in their Inter-Provincial T20 Trophy victory over the North-West Warriors in Dublin. The Warriors were chasing 189 but collapsed from 87-5 to 88 all out, largely down to the impressive showing from the all-rounder. Campher almost sealed this piece of history four years ago but he could only take four wickets from four balls against the Netherlands at the T20 World Cup. He was able to go one better this time around though, despite only making his second appearance since returning from a finger injury that caused him to miss Ireland's ODI and T20 series against West Indies. "I wasn't really sure what was happening," Campher told Cricket Ireland. "I just kind of stuck to my guns and kept it real simple and luckily it kind of went off. "Performances aside, it has been really good just to be around the boys. "When you get injured, it's a bit of a dark place when you get into the gym and stuff like that, so it has been really nice. "I have been really enjoying myself and putting pressure on myself to do well."

Campher records most consecutive wickets in professional cricket; full list

Irish all-rounder Curtis Campher created history on Thursday while playing in the Inter-Provincial T20 Trophy for Munster Reds against North-West Warriors, as he became the first cricketer in men's professional cricket to take five wickets on five consecutive balls. Before Campher's exploits against North-West Warriors, on five different occasions in men's professional cricket, bowlers had taken 4 wickets on 4 consecutive balls. Campher himself is on the list while playing a T20 International match for Ireland against Netherlands in 2021. The other four names in the list are Sri Lanka's Lasith Malinga, who achieved this feat against New Zealand in T20Is back in 2019, and Rashid Khan, who took 4 wickets for Afghanistan against Ireland in 2019, also in T20 Internationals. Andre Adams of New Zealand took 4 consecutive wickets for Auckland while playing in New Zealand's domestic ODI tournament, while Keith Hatchett of Australia achieved this feat playing for Tasmania in first-class cricket. Although Campher is the first male cricketer to take five consecutive wickets in professional cricket, he is not the first overall, as Zimbabwe women's all-rounder Kelis Ndhlovu also took five wickets in five balls for Zimbabwe U-19 against Eagles Women in the domestic T20 tournament back in 2024. Campher becomes first male cricketer to take five wickets in five balls

Ireland all-rounder Curtis Campher made history by becoming the first male player in professional cricket to claim five wickets in five balls, achieving the feat on Thursday. He did so while playing for Munster Reds during their Inter-Provincial T20 Trophy clash against the North-West Warriors in Dublin, with Munster ultimately winning the match by 100 runs. Campher began his spell by bowling Jared Wilson and trapping Graham Hume lbw to end the 12th over, then returned in the 14th to complete a hat-trick with the dismissal of Andy McBrine, before removing Robbie Millar and Josh Wilson to finish the streak. "I wasn't really sure what was happening," he told Cricket Ireland. "I just kind of stuck to my guns and kept it real simple and luckily it kind of went off."
