workers for not speaking Marathi led to a 'bandh' by Mira Road-Bhayander traders who demanded the arrest of the assaulters. An FIR was filed, but no arrests have been made as charges invoked are minor.
This has prompted calls for invoking the IT Act as the assaulters made a video of the attack and circulated it.
Traders observed a day's bandh on Thursday demanding the arrest of the men who attacked the sweet shop owner on Tuesday for not speaking in Marathi. An FIR was filed against seven individuals at Kashimira police station. However, only notices were sent; no arrest took place.
The bandh was called by traders of all communities.
Kamla Chaudhary, a pharmacist, speaking in fluent Marathi, said, "I have been operating a pharmacy in Mira Bhayander for over a decade now. Such harassment will have a negative impact." One of the traders at a protest questioned why such acts took place though the BJP was running the govt: "If they are in power in the State and the Centre, then why are we not safe," he said.
Another protestor, Meena Agarwal, said, "I am 60yrs old now and have been speaking our mother tongue all these years and it is not possible for me to learn this language.

Avinash Jadhav of the MNS said the bandh was organised by the BJP.
Minister of state for home Yogesh Kadam sought to balance linguistic chauvinism with condemnation of the vigilantes. Kadam said, "In Maharashtra, you have to speak Marathi. If you don't know Marathi, your attitude shouldn't be that you won't speak Marathi...
If anyone disrespects Marathi here, we will enforce our laws.'' At the same time, he said those who beat up (the shop owner) should not take the law into their own hands.
"They should have filed a complaint against the concerned person; action would have been taken." Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray said, "We want that our mother tongue Marathi is not insulted and no language is forcefully imposed... We don't want anybody to take the law into their hands, but when it is the other way round and Marathi or Maharashtra is insulted, things can escalate."
In the FIR, shop owner Babulal Khimji Chaudhary said his employee was threatened and abused when he replied in Hindi to some people who came to his shop asking for water. Later they beat up Chaudary, the complaint said.

Language violence peaks in Maharashtra as MNS workers assault shopkeeper

In this episode of 5ive Live, the focus is on the linguistic violence in Maharashtra, where MNS workers were caught on camera assaulting a shopkeeper for not speaking Marathi, sparking political chaos. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has condemned the violence, stating that hooliganism in the name of language will not be tolerated. The incident has led to diverse reactions from political parties, with some ministers defending the need to respect Marathi, while the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena faction has remained ambiguous in their response. This comes ahead of a rally where estranged cousins Uddhav and Raj Thackeray are set to share a stage, highlighting the dangerous rise of linguistic chauvinism and its political implications in Maharashtra. Additionally, India Today has accessed Air India's compensation forms sent to the families of victims of the AI-171 plane crash. The forms ask for details about the victim's employment status and financial dependency of family members, triggering controversy. A UK-based law firm representing over 40 families alleges that Air India is coercing families into submitting financial disclosures, which the airline denies, calling the charges unsubstantiated and inaccurate. Air India states it has already paid interim relief to 47 families and has support staff assisting families. The controversy raises questions about the fairness of this practice and its impact on grieving families, with lawsuits seeking enhanced compensation from Air India and possibly Boeing expected to be filed in the coming days.

MP's Reena wins 2 karate silver medals at World Police Games in US

Bhopal: MP Police constable Reena Gurjar clinched two karate silver medals at the World Police Games in Birmingham, USA, building upon her previous year's achievement of two gold medals. Reena showcased outstanding performance in both Kata and Kumite events. In Kumite, she triumphed over Brazilian officer Alencar before falling to the Philippines' officer Bejeramo in the final bout. Talking to TOI, Reena shared her initial expectations: "I won the gold medal last year by defeating a player from the Philippines, but this year I had to settle for silver. I will try my best to win the gold medal again next year." Her Kata performance saw her progress to the finals after defeating a South Korean competitor in the semi-finals, resulting in another silver medal. Hailing from Rajgarh, Reena received training at the MP Martial Arts Academy between 2009 and 2012. "The academy did wonders for me. Whatever I learned from there helped me reach such a height. I am also a coach there now," she reflected. She attributes her success to family backing and commitment: "Whatever I am able to do today, I am able to do it only because of my family and discipline. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo My mother and my sister supported me a lot. Her initial karate coaching came from Coach Jaidev Sharma during her academy tenure. "I can claim that the facilities being provided by the academy are some of the best available facilities in the country," she stated. Having secured around 15 gold medals in national events, Reena maintains her focus on upcoming competitions after her World Police Games achievement. "I believe in performing wherever I play.
