Death in Paradise's Ralf Little discusses potential return of iconic BBC show
Actor Ralf Little has garnered a new legion of fans since joining the hit BBC crime series Death in Paradise.
At 45, he portrayed DI Neville Parker on the programme for four years before deciding to depart in 2024, with Don Gilet stepping into the role as Mervin Wilson.
Yet, viewers might also remember Ralf from his earlier days on another beloved show, The Royle Family.
Starting in 1998, he took on the role of Antony, Jim Royle's put-upon son, until 2000. Although the sitcom only ran for three series, it has become an iconic part of British television.
In a chat with The I Paper, Ralf discussed whether he believes shows like The Royle Family would have a shot at being aired in the current TV landscape, reports Wales Online.
He remarked: "The reality is that The Royle Family only got made because of several strokes of luck."
This trailblazing comedy centred around the Wythenshawe working-class family, with creators Caroline Ahern and Craig Cash portraying Denise and Dave.
Ralf continued: "It's slightly passed into history as a genius bit of commissioning but even that was made through hustle."
"There are fewer opportunities, fewer government programmes for young working class voices to get into the industry – the Seventies' and Eighties' Jimmy McGoverns and (Royle Family co-star) Ricky Tomlinsons.
"It's a weird time. The entirety of television has completely changed from under me while I've been doing my career. It's a constant grind and constant hustle to try and get anything made."
Despite The Royle Family launching Ralf's career, he previously revealed that many industry figures viewed him as a 'gangly teenager'.
A few years ago, whilst still appearing in Death in Paradise, the actor admitted: "I've had a 20-year career and this is the first show I've actually been the legitimate lead in... at age 40.
"Don't get me wrong, anyone's lucky to even have one, but it's taken a while to even get here."
Following his departure from Death in Paradise, the 45-year-old is set to appear in the upcoming dystopian thriller, The Flaw.
According to a synopsis from Deadline, the plot centres on "a ruthless Interrogator (Dawson) who is ordered by the Special Service to follow a perfect Plan to prove a Suspect (McBain) is guilty.
"But once the interrogation gets underway, he comes to realise that there is a flaw not only in the Plan, but also in the Regime itself," the synopsis from Deadline states.

Natalie Cassidy says 'I don't miss it' as she opens up on EastEnders exit
Natalie Cassidy has opened up on her decision to leave EastEnders after playing Sonia Fowler on the BBC soap for more than three decades Natalie Cassidy confesses she "doesn't miss" EastEnders after departing the soap following more than three decades on screen. The actress initially joined the beloved BBC programme as Sonia Fowler back in 1993. The 42-year-old remained with the series for 14 years before her initial exit in 2007. She made sporadic returns before securing a permanent comeback in 2014. Yet this January saw the announcement that Natalie would be departing the soap once again, with her farewell scenes broadcasting on April 17. During that period, Natalie expressed her desire to dedicate more time to her family - fiancé Marc Humphreys and daughters Eliza, 15, and eight-year-old Joanie - whilst exploring fresh projects. Natalie has now revealed her feelings about leaving during a chat with fellow soap actress Kellie Bright. Appearing on the Life with Nat podcast, she declared: "I don't miss it, I don't. I miss the people. It's full on." The television personality went on to confess she feels positive about her decision. She added: "I do feel happier doing the things I'm doing now. I always feel like I have to say it, I loved it, I'm grateful for it but I did fall into it and that was that, and that's what I did for 30 years, I don't know if I was meant to do that." Following her departure from the programme, Natalie has penned a book about motherhood, titled Happy Days, which is scheduled for release in October, and has fronted her own consumer show on Channel 4. He explained that he found a variety of factors have made the UK "not a nice place to live any more". The HGV driver and his wife Kim, 36, are moving with their children Noah, 10, and Molly, eight, in November. They said they want to break away from their monotonous routine and start a new life abroad, embracing the "beautiful scenery" and "incredible food" Thailand has to offer. "I feel like life is just flying by, you wake up on a Monday, you're fed up and you can't wait for the weekend – you're wishing the days away," Dale said. He added that the cost of living is continuing to rise while the UK streets are now "a state". Despite an increase in income following a change in work, Dale said all his extra money is "just going to bills". He compared the never-ending cycle to "banging your head against a brick wall". The couple's children are also excited for the move, eager to begin homeschooling life and leave the British school system. Dale and Kim plan to focus on English and basic maths, as subjects their children enjoy such as history, video editing, and photography. He revealed that the they will travel to Bangkok for one week before moving down the coast to Hua Hin. The family will then stay at the scenic beachside district for a few months.
