Charities call for 'vital changes' as Lupita Nyong'o details decade-long health battle
Lupita Nyong'o candidly shared the details of her decade-long journey with uterine fibroids since her diagnosis in March 2014.
The US actor said she had been secretly battling the condition, which are non-cancerous growths that develop in or around the womb, for a decade.
In a post shared on her Instagram page, Lupita, 42, said she was "speaking up" about her story. Along with a series of snaps, she said she hoped her experience would "resonate with anyone else who has ever felt dismissed, confused or alone".
"And I hope to seek answers for the far too many women dealing with uterine fibroids (80% of Black women and 70% of white women by age 50!). We deserve better. It's time to demand it. Silence serves no one," she wrote.
Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous growths developing in and around the womb. Statistics show that 2 in 3 women, most commonly between the ages of 30-50, will get a fibroid in their lifetime. 80% of Black women and 70% of white women by the age of 50 will get a fibroid.
The symptoms of the fibroids vary from; heavy menstrual bleeding and anaemia, pelvic pain, pregnancy complications and frequent urination, whilst others may not have any symptoms.
Women's health charity, Wellbeing of Women, revealed how "fantastic" it was for Lupita to have spoken out about her uterine fibroids as their Just a Period campaign has called for urgent change in this area.

"We want to see an end to the shame, stigma and silence around heavy bleeding and pain," Marianne Sladowsky, head of communications and campaigns said. "[We want] more education for young people so that girls are able to know when they need to seek help for their periods, better education for GPs to end the dismissal that many women encounter when they seek help and more money to fund women's health research so that we are better able to diagnose and treat women's health problems."
When asked about the state of women's health, head of communications at Endometriosis UK, Faye Farthing, said women's health has been "under-prioritised and under-funded for too long".
"It's time the tide changed to ensure that everyone experiencing symptoms of a menstrual health condition receives the right care at the right time," she told The Mirror.
"Without vital changes to education, health and employment - those with the disease [endometriosis] will continue to suffer. We hope that this [UK] Government prioritises women's health and ensures that there is the necessary funding, capacity and resources to meet the needs of patients so that everyone gets access to the right care at the right time."

The creator claimed the natural solutions were the key to her clear skin, she added: "I haven't washed [my] face once this week, and just have given [themselves] daily sea scrub facials. Not a pimple in sight". But surely the murky Atlantic water couldn't actually work wonders? Well, the answer is unsurprisingly more complicated than the five-second clip made out. Seawater can have some benefits, it's a natural exfoliant so similar to your expensive charcoal scrub, it can remove dead skin cells making your skin feel smoother and softer. The sea can also be high in minerals like magnesium, calcium, and potassium which can help nourish your skin and help combat certain conditions. However, despite the potential benefits a skincare expert has come out to warn anyone looking to ditch their regime for ocean water. Chartered chemist and founder of SOS Serum Skincare, Bruce Green admitted on the surface it may be a good idea: "While the idea of a sea scrub facial sounds natural and indulgent, directly scrubbing your face with sand or saltwater from the ocean can do more harm than good. "Seawater does contain minerals like magnesium and calcium that can benefit the skin by reducing inflammation and balancing oil. However, the ocean is not a sterile environment." The sea can be much dirtier than you think, and once the particles get into your skin, it can soon trigger breakouts. The chemist added: "Many popular beaches have been shown to contain traces of faecal matter, pollutants, and even antibiotic-resistant bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus (Staph), which can lead to serious skin infections. "Sand is also highly abrasive and can cause microscopic tears in the skin barrier, leading to sensitivity and breakouts. While marine-based skincare ingredients are trending, I would strongly recommend opting for professionally formulated products that safely harness oceanic elements—rather than risking your skin's health at the shoreline," Green added. "Look on your facial skin as the bonnet on your favourite car. You polish it with care and lovingly, you certainly don't rub sand onto it." Commenters under the original post have also warned against the sea technique. One person wrote: "Omg please be careful, my friend did that and got a staph infection! It looks so nice though". In an exclusive interview with The Sun, Binky says: "I actually put the gum thing online because I had no idea what it was and if it was common. "I was really worried about it and I actually only learnt through social media. By the way, hundreds of messages I got from other parents, other women, saying they've got the same. "I think the old wives tale is that you lose a tooth per child. I don't know, I'm freaking out, I'm going to have a tooth in ten years." Mum to daughter India, eight, from her past relationship with Josh 'JP' Patterson and sons Wolfie, three, and Wilder, one, with husband Max Darnton, Binky uses her platform to give an honest account of motherhood – warts and all. She continues: "Anyway, there's lots of not so glamorous things that happen after giving birth and having children. "I mean, I've started having to do my greys. I think it's all fun and games, and obviously the good outweighs the bad. "I think it's really important to talk about those things on social media. It calmed me down knowing how common this was and I've got some really great recommendations. "I'm hoping I can do the same with other people. Like my son's sesame allergy, helping to get these things desensitised and kind of being open and honest and talking about things like having cancerous cells, getting a smear test. "I'm using my platform for helping and educating in any small way I can." Eight years on from leaving Made In Chelsea, she says she finally feels like she has her "s**t together". "I feel like I've had child after child, and I've kind of been in the woods slightly, feeling a little bit kind of out of it," she admits. "And now I feel like I'm kind of getting my my Mojo back." Though as happy as she is, Binky isn't immune from the challenges that face mums and dads up and down the country. She's teamed up with Heinz to promote its new Mr. Men Little Miss pasta sauce in a bid to make mealtimes that little bit easier and tastier. The release of the smooth Bolognese sauce, which contains 100 percent natural ingredients and three vegetables, comes after new research found over a third of parents struggle getting their children to eat veg. Binky says: "I think all meal times are pretty stressful, and I've gone down the route of kind of creating beautiful masterpieces that have taken me hours to make, and I put them in front of my children, and there's vegetables in there. There's everything you could think of that's like going to shove goodness in them, and of course they roll their eyes, push their plate away, and they can go completely silent on me. "So I have to take myself off into a different room, just to kind of calm down and just kind of breathe after being completely shot down by my children. "I've just realised that if there's any easy, nutritious, yummy thing out there like this amazing sauce Bolognese sauce. It's a bit of a no brainer, really." Adding to the fun for kids is the inclusion of new character Mr. Ridiculously Good on the label. Away from family life, Binky has been filming the second run of Beyond Chelsea, the Made In Chelsea spin-off following the lives of original stars Binky, Lucy Watson and Rosie Fortescue. Binky pitched the idea to telly bosses last year after being constantly asked what the cast members were up to now and is delighted with how it's been received. And she's also launching her first kidswear range with Marks & Spencer which she calls a "pinch me" moment. She says: "I mean, I've had my first bra fitted at Marks and Spencers. I've grown up with Marks and Spencers. So that was a really cool career highlight."
