Boots expert recommends £29 SPF powder for protecting skin

Daily Mirror18-06-2025

These SPF products are perfect for makeup fans, according to a Boots beauty expert
Keeping skin protected from the sun isn't just for summer holidays - it's essential every single day, helping to prevent premature ageing, dark spots and even skin cancer. Fortunately, there are plenty of SPF-infused products specifically designed for everyday use.
According to Boots Beauty Specialist Leanna Zaman, there are some standout formulas that also work seamlessly with foundation, concealer and more. One such favourite is Supergoop's Resetting Powder SPF30 (£29), an innovative brush-on powder that helps to mattify shine while delivering mineral-based SPF.
"Powder sunscreens are a great option to prevent your scalp burning and absorb extra oils, whilst sun sticks are great for the lips as they tend to be a waxy format that will stay put for longer," Leanna explains. For a luscious pout, try something like the Bondi Sands Sunny Daze SPF 50 Lip Balm (£7.99), which offers high-level protection in a non-sticky formula.
For under makeup, Leanna also recommends Skin + Me Daily Moisturiser with SPF 50 (£21.99). This multi-tasking option hydrates while shielding skin from both UVA and UVB rays - ideal for layering under foundation and concealer without greasiness.

As an alternative, Rodial's SPF Drops (£75) has also become a regular fixture in my routine. I've been applying it every morning before my moisturiser and primer, knowing I'm getting broad-spectrum UV protection plus added defence against blue light and pollution (a major bonus for any fellow Londoners).
However, Leanna warns that users shouldn't rely solely on SPF in cosmetics. "The formulas are often thinner and don't always allow for even coverage, plus you will typically apply less product than you need to protect your skin sufficiently," she notes.
With that in mind, Leanne suggests adding Purito Wonder Releaf Centella Daily Sun Lotion (£21) to baskets. This lightweight formula is suitable for sensitive skin and should be applied generously 15 minutes before sun exposure.
I also recommend Ritual's The Ritual of Karma Milky Spray SPF (£18.32). This spray is easy to apply, doesn't leave a white cast, and has a refreshing scent, making it a change from the usual slightly sweet sun cream scent.
"Always start the day with adequate protection," Leanna says. "Apply a teaspoon-sized amount of broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF30 to your face after your morning skincare routine and allow it to settle for at least 10 minutes. Apply your primer, foundation or other cosmetics on top – but avoid mixing products into your sunscreen as this can reduce the effectiveness."
For more prolonged and deliberate sun exposure, such as a picnic at the beach or outdoor sports, Leanna recommends opting for a high SPF, broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVB and UVA rays, like Soltan or Sun Bum.
"For your makeup, focus on your eyes, brows and lips, but skip the foundation base so you can reapply your sunscreen liberally every two hours and keep your skin protected," she says. "Avoid the midday sun if you can, and always cover up with a hat and sunglasses."

I put three lip glaze that promise shine to the test - one will become your go-to

Read on to also find out about a fun skincare collab GLIDE ON I put three lip glaze that promise shine and hydration to the test – one will become your go-to LIP glaze is your latest handbag must-have, replacing balms, glosses and oils, promising shine, hydration and pigment with no sticky residue. This week I put three of them to the test. 4 Lip glaze are replacing balms, glosses and oils Budget Maybelline New York Lifter Glaze Lip Oil Balm, £7.99 for 19g, Boots 4 The Maybelline New York Lifter Glaze Lip Oil Balm feels hydrating and smells great Credit: supplied I was surprised by how pigmented this was. With just one swipe I got a far deeper colour than I expected, which is great for a product at such an affordable price. It has a nice, sweet smell and feels hydrating on the lips. My only gripe is that the stick is quite hard but I found it went on more easily if I swiped it on the back of my hand first to warm it up. Then I applied it to my lips for a more sheer finish that gave a gloss-like shine, but it works great as a tinted lip balm straight from the bullet. Mid-range Glossier Lip Glaze Hydrating Sheer Lip Oil, £22, 8ml, 4 This Glossier Lip Glaze Hydrating Sheer Lip Oil is sheer but has a soft and creamy formula Credit: supplied Glossier makes some of my favourite lip products, so I had high expectations for this. The formula feels soft and creamy, giving the slip of a gloss but with a buttery softness you might get from a balm – yet it's thinner than most oils or glosses, so it doesn't feel heavy. I have chronically chapped lips and immediately felt the hydration from the apricot seed oil and shea butter. We tried six lipsticks we'd never normally go for - here's what worked & what didn't The pigment is extremely sheer, so it can pass as 'your lips, but better shades' and you won't need a mirror to reapply it. If you want more colour pay-off, you'll need to layer it over a lip liner. Luxury Yves Saint Laurent LoveShine Candy Glaze, £38, 3g, 4 The Yves Saint Laurent LoveShine Candy Glaze doesn't go patchy and will quickly become your go-to Credit: supplied These promise the colour of a lipstick with the slick of an oil and, given that Maybelline and YSL are owned by L'Oreal, I thought the formulas would be pretty similar. In fact, this balm was far softer and easier to apply. It glides over lips like an oil but with a thicker, gel-cream consistency that stays put on lips longer, keeping them hydrated. The pigment is also closer to a tint than a lipstick, which I prefer for daily wear as it doesn't go patchy over time. This has quickly become my go-to.

Boots shoppers get free Prada mirror when buying 'non-drying' lipstick

Shoppers can get a designer compact mirror when they purchase selected Prada Beauty products at Boots online, and the Soft Matte Lipsticks are the bestseller icons from the collection Boots shoppers can get their hands on a luxury gift with purchase from Prada Beauty when buying selected makeup from the brand's iconic matte lipstick to setting powder, eyeliner and more. The Prada Beauty mirror is inspired by the brand's iconic Triangle. It features a silver metal base and gold-coloured trims, and shoppers can get a free Prada Beauty pouch to keep it scratch-free and safe from stains. But you'll have to be quick - the free gift will only be given out while stocks last. Shoppers can pick it up when buying a Prada Monochrome Soft Matte Lipstick, £40, which comes in 18 universally flattering shades. The lipstick delivers soft, diffused colours that recall the luminosity and versatility of Prada's iconic Re-Nylon fabric. There are more affordable brands that shoppers can get matte lipsticks including Lisa Eldridge's True Velvet Lip Colour, £27, and it leaves a velvety matte finish with a subtle sheen on lips. The MAC Macximal Silky Matte Lipstick in shade Velvet Teddy is now reduced to £20 on LookFantastic and provides up to 12 hours of full-coverage colour, paired with up to eight hours of lip-loving moisture to encourage a comfortable, high-impact finish. While the Prada Beauty nude pink shades like Tiepolo, Nudo and Blush are popular, cherry-red tones are equally loved by beauty fans. The lipsticks are formulated with Micro-Fit technology so that they glide seamlessly onto lips and feel weightless. Despite labelled as a matte lipstick, shoppers found it "hydrating" and "non-drying". It is infused in bifidus extract and jojoba oil to protect and reinforce the lip barrier function. One five-star shopper commented: "The packaging is gorgeous with a magnetic top. It is very chic in my bag. I love this lipstick especially because it is a matte, but not a drying matte. It's extremely soft and hydrating, which I think can be hard to find sometimes with matte lipstick. The application is extremely smooth, and the wear is great." Another shared: "The packaging is very luxurious and heavy, it does not have a specific smell and it is the perfect tone for all skin tones, its texture is very soft and thanks to its ingredients it makes it very moisturising. I love that it's in matte finish." The Prada Monochrome Soft Matte Lipstick is refillable, so shoppers can keep the metal case and get a refill of lipstick. But some customers said they "won't be repurchasing". One said: "Good colour and stayed in pretty well, but don't think I would purchase again because of the cost. Nothing about it really wowed me to entice me to purchase this exact lipstick." A second added: "The formula is a true matte with a light, buildable texture. It feels comfortable for the first 30 minutes after applying, but then I feel like I need to apply a lip balm. I don't feel like this lipstick lives up to the price point." But some said they bought it to treat themselves, with one sharing: "It is a solid investment for anyone looking to elevate their makeup collection."
