Online self-diagnosis is dangerous and causing 'fixation on worst case scenarios' says GP

More people are turning to Google for healthcare, as GPs are having to deal with patients self-diagnosing. Dr Martin Thornton speaks to The Mirror about the dangers of doing this for most commonly searched symptoms
Many young people have admitted to losing faith in their GP, and have turned to alternative measures for help - but how far can Google really go when you need help?

With many of Gen Z experiencing their teenage years in Covid, it's no wonder many suffer with health anxiety. With years worth of Covid scares as well asextortionate NHS waiting times trying to see a medical professional, people have turned to online help.

Many of us are guilty of turning to 'Dr Google' or ChatGPT for advice when we notice something wrong, as figures from 2023 show that there were nearly 50 million health-related Google searches, while NHS figures also show that GP consultations have fallen by 30% over the last year. Dr Martin Thornton, Chief Medical Officer at Bluecrest spoke to The Mirror why this might have happened - and why it can be so dangerous.

"What we've seen is that Gen Z has grown up with the internet in their pocket, so it seems a natural behaviour to turn to search engines, or even AI for quick, anonymous and shame-free answers," he explained. "While that information is always available, there's huge swathes of health information online that hasn't been verified by healthcare professionals, so can't always be trusted."
Traditionally access to health information and advice was only garnered from seeing a GP or medical professional, but now people are able to access it easier than ever through the internet. But is this creating more fear and anxiety, with information being so easily accessible? Or does it mean people no longer feel the need to see their doctor? Dr Martin reveals the truth.

Calling at 8am, and joining the mad rush of people hoping to get an on-the-day appointment isn't enjoyable for anyone, especially when you can have a quick search on your phone to figure out if you're in urgent need of attention or not. So it's easy to see why this may becoming a more popular alternative.
During the pandemic, GP consultations took place online and by phone where appropriate, as a response to restrictions on face-to-face contact. This can often be more convenient for patients and more opportunities for this type of contact have become the norm.
However Dr Thornton said: "access doesn't always equal understanding". He warned: "Misinformation online is rife, and younger generations may lack the experience to spot unreliable sources, through no fault of their own – that's a healthcare professional's job."

He added that what he's seeing more and more in his clinic is "people becoming fixated on worst-case scenarios". He detailed: "It happens especially after looking up symptoms online. While it's good that people are taking ownership of their health, there's a fine line between health intelligence, and knowing what to do with it. In some cases, online searches feed into existing fears, which can be hard to ignore without guidance from a healthcare professional."

This is causing a surge in people thinking they could have something more severe than they do. Dr Thornton said: "It's increasingly common for patients to arrive with a self-diagnosis in hand, sometimes fearing the worst. While I'm happy that patients are taking control of their health, more often than not, I'm happy to tell them that their fears are unfounded." He reiterated that professional evaluation is so important, to provide the context around vital health intelligence.
In terms of Covid and the mental health impacts of the pandemic, the expert said he has noticed how that time shifted how people think about illness. While public health messaging was vital at the time, Dr Thornton said it's left a "lingering sense of unease for many, and it's important not to ignore a lingering cough, it's also important to think of the wider context around perceived symptoms."
But it has also meant people are more health conscious than previous generations. He added: "At Bluecrest, we certainly see health assessments taken up more regularly by over 30s, and our research shows that health intelligence is highest in Gen Xs.

"At the same time, we know that many conditions, from high cholesterol to vitamin deficiencies, can appear much earlier than people expect. The key is reframing preventive health as a tool for confidence, alongside advice and support, so that people aren't left wondering what to do with the health data they receive," he explained.
With this in mind, Dr Thornton has detailed some of the most common symptoms people may have, and the risks of Googling them.
Pain
We've all been guilty of googling a nagging pain at one point, but it's one of the most misunderstood ailments. An online search might suggest anything from trapped nerves to late-stage cancer, when in reality, a lot of pains could be temporary, mechanical, or stress-related.

The danger is that people either panic unnecessarily or, conversely, dismiss persistent pain that could benefit from clinical attention. It'll be important to talk to your doctor about the context and history of your pain, as well as complete a physical examination to truly understand the pain puzzle, something that I don't think AI can offer yet!
Fatigue
If you're feeling more tired than usual, and type in a quick Google search, you might be alarmed to be presented with chronic fatigue syndrome, thyroid disorders, or even leukaemia. But the truth is, there are often lifestyle factors at play, whether it's poor sleep or diet, dehydration, stress, or even low iron. Before sending yourself into a spiral of anxiety, speaking to a doctor could help you uncover something that could be easily addressed.
Itchy skin
Google 'itchy skin' and you could be served with anything from liver disease, kidney failure or rare skin conditions. But most of the time, itching can be down to dry skin, allergies, or irritation. The risk with online searches is that people self-diagnose too early or panic before ruling out simple causes like soap sensitivity or winter dryness.

Stomach aches
Stomach pain can mean anything from indigestion to appendicitis when you ask Google. And while some causes do require urgent care, the majority are due to diet, stress or hormonal changes. If stomach pain persists, a more thorough assessment can give you the health intelligence you need to deal with it.
Coughs
We've been trained to be very suspicious of coughs post-Covid, and this could be a good thing, as persistent coughs that last longer than three weeks could signal something worse. However, common culprits are viral illnesses. I often find that patients who have googled their coughs are keen for antibiotics, which could have significant long-term consequences when used inappropriately.
Rashes
Skin rashes can look alarming online, particularly when you're served hundreds of graphic images of serious rashes. Lots of rashes are harmless, particularly in younger adults. The biggest risk is either overreacting and fearing something serious like meningitis, or missing red flags because online advice has falsely reassured you.

Stiff neck
A stiff neck can be scary, especially when a quick search brings up meningitis or spinal infections as top results. While these are serious conditions, they are also rare. Most cases of stiff neck are due to muscle strain, poor posture (sometimes ironically from poor tech hygiene!), or sleeping in an awkward position. It's important to assess things in context and avoid jumping to worst-case scenarios.
Headaches
Be honest, who hasn't googled a headache and feared the worst case scenario after a bad night? In reality, the vast majority of headaches are due to tension, dehydration, eye strain, or hormonal changes. Headache patterns, frequency, and associated symptoms are what matter most, and that needs professional input and health intelligence.
Eczema patches - usually on the back
Eczema can be really uncomfortable, so it's no wonder people are keen for answers, and are often told online that these patches can indicate autoimmune disorders of even skin cancer. Though uncomfortable, eczema is extremely common, particularly in young adults, and is often triggered by dry skin, allergens, stress, or even your clothing. Remember, online images look totally different on different body types and skin tones, so if you're truly concerned, a healthcare professional can help you piece together the eczema puzzle.

We'll use AI to spot more prostate cancer, says Science Secretary

Artificial Intelligence will be harnessed to find hidden cases of prostate cancer, the Science Secretary has said. Peter Kyle told The Telegraph that the Government is investing £168m on initiatives to use public data better and one major goal is to improve cancer screening on the NHS. A world-leading initiative led by Cancer Research UK has been given £10m in funding to improve cancer screening methods by identifying the most at-risk people and offering them personalised tests. The funding will 'develop AI-powered tools that can predict cancer risk', Mr Kyle said, and could save thousands of lives a year. The Telegraph has launched a campaign calling for a targeted national screening programme for prostate cancer, which focusses on men who are at the greatest risk. This includes men over 50, black men, whose risk is twice that of white men, and those with a family history of prostate cancer. Steve McQueen, Bob Willis and Chris Hoy are some of the high-profile British men to be recently diagnosed with the condition. Around 55,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer annually in England and around 33 men a day die from the condition. Writing for The Telegraph alongside Stian Westlake, the executive chairman of the Economic and Social Research Council, Mr Kyle said: 'This funding will support work on a project linking health records to demographics, family history and behaviour to identify those at higher risk of this devastating illness, so that it can be treated early – potentially saving thousands of lives every year.' The plan is to create flexible national screening programmes which can pick up more cases in individuals who may otherwise be missed and diagnosed only when the cancer was incurable. Officials are hoping to replicate the success of BRCA1 genetic screening. Around one in 400 people has faulty BRCA genes, which give women a 60 per cent chance of developing breast cancer. This received widespread attention and became known as the 'Angelina Jolie gene' after the Hollywood actress underwent a double mastectomy after finding out she was a carrier in 2013. The NHS now offers genetic tests to high-risk groups, such as Jewish women, to catch as many cases early as possible. Mr Kyle said: 'Just as BRCA gene screening, heroically brought to the fore by campaigners including Angelina Jolie, revolutionised how we understand and manage the risk of hereditary breast cancer, this next generation of data-driven screening could do the same for more cancers, including prostate cancer.' Scientists running the scheme hope it can enable the NHS to offer more frequent cancer screening sessions or screening at a younger age to those at higher risk, while those at lower risk could be spared unnecessary tests. People identified as higher risk could also be sent for cancer testing faster when they go to their GP with possible symptoms. The wider Administrative Data Partnership will last until 2031 and try to repurpose data that already exists to make improvements to the judicial service, education, health and other public sectors. Combining, standardising and interpreting different datasets simultaneously is a daunting challenge for scientists owing to decades of independent data collection and little crossover. However, the Government believes that vast data reserves, combined with the power of AI computing, could transform healthcare. The cancer screening project will build new models over the next five years to merge relevant data as well as creating algorithms which will process it and ensure the results are accurate and reliable. Antonis Antoniou, the programme director and professor of cancer risk prediction at the University of Cambridge, said: 'The UK's strengths in population-scale data resources, combined with advanced analytical tools like AI, offer tremendous opportunities to link disparate datasets and uncover clues that could lead to earlier detection, diagnosis, and prevention of more cancers.' Dr David Crosby, the head of prevention and early detection research at Cancer Research UK, told The Telegraph: 'The single most important thing we can do to beat cancer is to find it earlier, when treatment is more likely to be successful. 'With half a million cancer cases per year expected in the UK by 2040, we need a major shift towards more accurate diagnosis and detection of early cancer. 'The Cancer Data Driven Detection programme will link health data sources together and build the powerful new tools doctors need to identify those at highest risk of cancer and prioritise resources towards them. 'Moving towards a preventative approach to healthcare will not be easy and will take time. Cancer Research UK's investment in the programme is an investment in the future of cancer care.' Data is the key to changing lives for the better By Peter Kyle and Stian Westlake For much of our everyday lives, data is king – from digital maps getting us from A to B, to health apps keeping our fitness and sleep in check, to even streaming platforms suggesting the next drama we might want to get stuck into. For this government, making good use of data is the difference between successful policies that are rooted in evidence, and those that rely on hope, luck or intuition, which no minister, legislator or council leader wants to rely on. Ultimately data is the bedrock of decision-making, ensuring policies, programmes and funding are doing what they are intended to do – changing lives for the better. Linking data from across government to the national pupil database for example can help to really dig into the source of inequalities that trap too many Brits from childhood through to the labour market – helping us to take targeted action in boosting social mobility and shattering glass ceilings. Or by better applying it in the justice system, we can understand patterns of reoffending, stopping career criminals from inflicting more misery on the law-abiding majority. And it can forecast the impact that this government extending the national living wage has on younger workers, so that millions more who put the hours in take home the pay they deserve. What unites all of these examples is that they were all made possible by UKRI's administrative data research UK partnership. It works to connect, and make sense of, the huge wealth of data that is generated by government services, bringing it to our world class researchers securely and with the public's privacy at heart since 2018. In short it has been demonstrating the role data can play in improving lives in as many ways as we can imagine and more. But we know we can go further and too many social and economic researchers – many of the very best of whom are right here in the UK – simply can't access the data they need. It is fragmented and siloed, held in different datasets by different public organisations. That means too many rely instead on insights from abroad, which while offering much, simply can't tell the full story of life in Britain in 2025. Accessing the raw resource of all that data and translating it into a form that researchers can use is no easy task, and while we need to grow our data science expertise, we also need to build relationships and make the case to other organisations that secure data sharing has the power to change lives. That is why UKRI is investing a further £168m to continue ADR UK's programme of work through to 2031. This includes continuing our partnership with Cancer Research UK to develop AI-powered tools that can predict cancer risk based on health records, family history and behaviour. Just as BRCA gene screening, heroically brought to the fore by campaigners including Angelina Jolie, revolutionised how we understand and manage the risk of hereditary breast cancer, this next generation of data-driven screening could do the same for more cancers, including prostate cancer. This funding will support work with organisations and charities like Cancer Research UK for example, on a project linking health records to demographics, family history, and behaviour to identify those at higher risk of this devastating illness, so that it can be treated early – potentially saving thousands of lives every year. The ADR will also offer learnings for and help us shape our new national data library, a central government resource designed to bring together existing research programmes and make it easier for policymakers and public bodies to access and use data securely to improve public services. As the incredible opportunities and challenges of technology like AI advance at unprecedented speeds and as we grapple with the fate of our planet as our climate changes, using data to drive policy for the generations to come has never been more important. This government is driven by a plan for change that will transform the lives of the British people, from growing our economy so that our payslips go further, to unlocking opportunity for everyone regardless of background, and building an NHS that is fit for the future and makes the most of the opportunities in new technology. Data can play a huge part in getting that right and targeting government support where it is needed most.

I helped my friend through cancer - then mine came back

My appointment was late. I remember sitting in the waiting area thinking: If it's cancer, surely they wouldn't leave me hanging? Finally in the room, I expected the doctor to check my name, date of birth – but he didn't do that. Beside him were a couple of nurses, which seemed a bit overkill for my results to be nothing. That's when the doctor told me it was breast cancer. I had found a lump in my breast, close to my armpit, at the start of October half term in 2017. By December I had been scheduled for a lumpectomy. Subsequent scans and a biopsy showed the cancer hadn't spread to my lymph nodes; it was followed up with six rounds of chemotherapy, one every three weeks. I felt progressively worse as time went on. I lost my hair – it would just fall out of my head as I was walking down the hallway. I let the kids shave my head which, in the circumstances, was quite a nice way of doing it. My daughter Amelia, who was then six, plaited a piece, which she cut off and kept. I started being sick after the second session, and then the nausea started before I even got to the hospital because I knew what was coming. By session six, I ended up being admitted because I was vomiting non-stop. The next stage was radiotherapy, which I finished on August 10, 2018. It marked the end of my active treatment, and I was told I was clear of disease. The first symptom of breast cancer that most women notice is a lump or an area of thickened tissue in their breast. You should see a GP if you notice any of the following: a new lump or area of thickened tissue in either breast that was not there before a change in the size or shape of one or both breasts a discharge of fluid from either of your nipples a lump or swelling in either of your armpits a change in the look or feel of your skin, such as puckering or dimpling, a rash or redness a rash (like eczema), crusting, scaly or itchy skin or redness on or around your nipple a change in the appearance of your nipple, such as becoming sunken into your breast Via NHS. Afterwards, I thought: 'Right, time to move on; to start living our best lives'. I have a group of five school-mum friends, Debbie, Natalie, Sam and Steph and we would get together, eat pizza, drink Prosecco and occasionally plan some fundraising events for breast cancer charities – starting with a 1,000 mile bike ride in September 2018. We raised about £2,500 and it was really good for me to have something positive to focus on – I'm not very good at being still. Buoyed by the cycle, we took on muddy runs – not that all of us were thrilled about it. Some of my friends really like being clean and having their nails done, but they couldn't say no to the girl who had cancer. Reaching the five year mark after diagnosis really boosted my confidence; research suggests that five years clear of disease is a big step. Taking the cancer drug Tamoxifen was a daily reminder of what I'd been through but reaching that milestone was a bit of a sigh of relief. It was around this time I noticed Debbie was a little quiet; not her normal, chatty self. We had known each other for almost a decade, since our older two kids, now both 12, were in infant school, and our younger kids, Matthew and Libby, are both eight and thick as thieves. I was about to text her but before I could, my phone pinged with a message from her, telling she had found a lump. I was floored. Obviously, it took me back to getting my diagnosis but you just don't want anyone you know to have to go through cancer. I knew how it would impact her and her children: they were older than mine when I found out, and whereas I didn't even tell my then two-year-old son, her kids would understand everything. Debbie had a lump in her neck as well as her breast and the immediate worry was that it had already spread to other organs. Waiting for her results was agony. I didn't want to be that person pestering – but I've never checked my phone quite so much as I did that day. Mercifully, Debbie's cancer hadn't spread but she was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer. Once Debbie got a treatment plan, I wanted to support her. Childcare was at the top of the list. There were some days, in the first week after each chemo session, that were really hard to drag myself to school. It was easy for me to collect Libby when I got Matthew and bring her back to ours for tea. When she started chemo, we worked out which days she tended to feel worse, and I took Libby to school, too. Discussing the importance of being breast aware, Addie Mitchell, clinical nurse specialist at Breast Cancer Now, wants women to know there is no right or wrong way to check your breasts. 'It's about looking and feeling regularly so any changes can be spotted quickly,' she said. 'The sooner breast cancer is diagnosed, the more effective treatment may be. 'Whatever your age, being aware of all the signs and symptoms of breast cancer is crucial – it's not just a lump to look out for. Other changes could be a nipple becoming inverted or a change in texture of the skin. 'While most symptoms won't mean breast cancer, if you notice anything unusual for you get it checked out by your GP. 'Anyone with questions can call Breast Cancer Now's nurses free on 0808 800 6000 or visit I still do that now every Friday – it's become our little ritual – because despite having completed treatment, Debbie has been badly impacted by the side effects. People often think that once you've finished chemo, you're done and out the other side. But I found the second lump in my armpit in the May half term last year (half terms aren't good for me!) and scans revealed that not only had my cancer returned, it had spread. It was in my lungs. I found out a few hours before the school fete. Debbie was in the midst of treatment, so Libby was coming with us. I remember walking around all these stalls, paying money for anything and everything but thinking, 'Oh, God…'. I spent a fortune on the Teddy Tombola for Libby – she must have gone home with about 20 of them – knowing that Debbie's husband, Andy, couldn't argue because I had cancer, again. Sarah and Debbie are fundraising for Breast Cancer Now and the Cavell Unit at Dewsbury Hospital. You can donate here I'm now having weekly chemo sessions. I have seen some reduction in size but treatment now is just to try and keep the cancer stable. The other week at chemo someone asked how many weeks I had left. I told her that my treatment is ongoing and she replied, 'But, it can't just go on forever?' I said 'No, you're right, it can't,' and she started crying on me. The plan is just to keep going. I like to think I lived my life to the fullest before cancer, but now, when my son Matthew climbs into bed and asks to read a bit more of his book I say yes. I don't want to miss out on stuff. In some respects, because I know what lies ahead, I get the chance to live my best life. Some people will never get that. This world can be awful but I think we can all just do our own little bit to make it a little bit better. Last year, Debbie and I hosted an afternoon tea to raise money for Breast Cancer Now; we raised £12,000. We've just done another one and increased our total to £10,000. Half is going to Breast Cancer Now and the other half to the Cavell Unit at Dewsbury Hospital, where Debbie and I both had treatment. More Trending Debbie checks in with me every Monday to ask how I'm doing. But it's hard for her. My secondary diagnosis is a reminder about the risk of reoccurrence. She is having scans every year and already walking on eggshells – having the stage 4 girl up the road can't be helpful. But it's helped massively to be in each other's lives. And not only does she look incredible, but people are struggling to believe she is the same person as the woman in her 'before' photos. The stunner, who has slimmed down and is now '7 stone lighter' attributes her weight loss to three healthy habits - eating in a calorie deficit, walking and weight lifting. Lucy explained that she is breastfeeding, so isn't able to use Mounjaro. As a result, she took matters into her own hands on a mission to slim down and when it comes to her diet, rather than eating nothing but fruit and vegetables, she swears by a big focus on protein. She confirmed that she consumes 180g of protein every day, as well as 27g to 30g of fiber. When it comes to walking, the savvy mum stressed the importance of doing 10,000 steps every single day, which she has been doing since 1st September 2024. And when she's not walking, she's exercising in the gym. Read food labels Knowing how to read food labels can help you choose healthier options. Use the calorie information to work out how a particular food fits into your daily calorie allowance on the weight loss plan. Use a smaller plate Using smaller plates can help you eat smaller portions. By using smaller plates and bowls, you may be able to gradually get used to eating smaller portions without going hungry. It takes about 20 minutes for the stomach to tell the brain it's full, so eat slowly and stop eating before you feel full. Don't ban foods Do not ban any foods from your weight loss plan, especially the ones you like. Banning foods will only make you crave them more. There's no reason you cannot enjoy the occasional treat as long as you stay within your daily calorie allowance. Don't stock junk food To avoid temptation, do not stock junk food – such as chocolate, biscuits, crisps and sweet fizzy drinks – at home.
