Terengganu Police Escort Hearses After Fatal UPSI Bus Crash
Terengganu Police Chief Datuk Mohd Khairi Khairudin said the initiative was taken to facilitate the journey of all hearses involved, following reports of traffic congestion in Gerik.
'We were informed that traffic in Gerik is slightly congested, so police have dispatched a patrol car from Besut to Gerik to escort the hearses to and from the location.
'In addition, police in Kelantan will also assist with the escort in each district along the route if there are traffic delays,' he said when contacted today.
Mohd Khairi also called on the public to cooperate by giving way so that the police escort and hearses can reach their destination without delay.
Fifteen Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students were killed and 17 others seriously injured when the chartered bus they were travelling in was involved in an accident with a Perodua Alaza along the mountain highway 1 am today.

TUMPAT: District police have denied allegations made by a man claiming he lost his MyKad while in police custody. Tumpat police chief, Assistant Commissioner Mohd Khairi Shafie, said the individual, in a viral social media post, alleged he had been fined RM300 by the state National Registration Department after losing his identity card. Mohd Khairi clarified that the police follow strict standard operating procedures (SOP) in handling detainees' personal belongings, including identity cards. "All items belonging to detainees are properly recorded and securely stored in a designated room, either as case exhibits or personal effects," he said in a statement. Checks revealed that the individual in question had five previous criminal records involving drug-related and other offences. His most recent arrest was on July 2, 2025, where he was investigated under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for drug consumption. "At the time of arrest, the individual was not in possession of a MyKad and only provided verbal identification to the police," Mohd Khairi said. He added that the Tumpat police remain committed to safeguarding detainees' welfare and ensuring transparency in the discharge of their duties. KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 1 — The site of the bus crash that killed 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students at KM53 of the East-West Highway (Jalan Raya Timur Barat, JRTB) has been upgraded with the installation of solar-powered street lights, Utusan Malaysia reported today. Other major improvements include resurfacing of the road and repairs to damaged guardrails following the June 9 incident, according to the Malay daily. A 60km survey from Gerik town in Perak to the crash site in Banun, near Tasik Banding, revealed ongoing infrastructure works, particularly the installation of solar lights at sharp bends and narrow sections of the highway. A Gerik resident, who wished to be known only as Sue, 39, told Utusan Malaysia she welcomed the upgrades as a preventive step to avoid similar tragedies. 'This gives drivers more confidence at night. JRTB hasn't seen improvements like this in a long time and was quite neglected. It's encouraging for those of us who frequently travel to Jeli,' she reportedly said. Built during the communist insurgency in the 1970s, the Gerik-Jeli stretch cuts through dense forest, home to wild elephants and the Malayan tiger. Another resident, Mohd Fadzil Abdul Aziz, 48, praised the government and the Public Works Ministry for responding swiftly, telling Utusan Malaysia that the upgrades have made a noticeable difference.
