Stirling prepare for Accies curtain-raiser as pre-season preparations rounds up

Daily Record09-07-2025
The Binos will once again face Hamilton in the Premier Sports Cup group phase - with hopes high of a quick start to the season after strong early business.
The pre-season preparations are finally complete for Stirling Albion as the competitive curtain raiser looms with the visit of Hamilton Accies to Forthbank on Saturday.
The Binos completed their warm-up matches with a 4-1 defeat away to Lowland League side Broxburn Athletic last night (Tuesday), but the Stirling selection was made mainly of young players alongside first-teamers looking for fitness ahead of the gruelling kick-off schedule.

Instead, Stirling boss Alan Maybury made use of the opportunity for a training session with his revamped squad ahead of the Premier Sports Cup opener against troubled Accies, who are making their preparations for a return to League One in the upcoming season.

It will be a return to play against his former side for one of Albion's marquee summer arrivals in forward Ross Cunningham, who arrives after finishing joint top scorer in League One last season with Kelty Hearts.
The versatile winger made 33 appearances for Accies during five seasons with the South Lanarkshire club.
Former Accies kid Cunningham is part of an impressive-looking forward line for Stirling, which also boasts new another signature in forward Russell McLean.
Stirling will be searching for their first win over the South Lanarkshire club in 12 matches - the last win from the Binos dating back to a 2-0 success in the old Second Division on December 27, 1999.
The Binos did share the group with Accies last season and ground out a 0-0 draw at New Douglas Park, before claiming a bonus point on penalties.
But Stirling really struggled against Hamilton in their time together in the third tier in the 2023/24 season, two home draws matched by a pair of heavy defeats where the Binos conceded eight times with no reply.
The pair will join some of the standout names from the Binos strike force last season in Ryan Shanley, Dale Carrick and Dale Hilson.
The frenetic pace towards the league opener on August 2 picks up with the now traditional group stage, with Saturday's home opener against Hamilton followed by a trip to Dumbarton on Tuesday as Albion get their first look at League Two opposition.
A match at the opposite end of the scale then awaits on the following weekend, as the TV cameras roll into town for the visit of Hearts.
It all concludes with an away match at East End Park at Neil Lennon's Dunfermline Athletic as the Binos hope to take a few higher-division scalps and try to progress out of the group, despite their position as the lowest seed.

Premiership trio Kilmarnock, Livingston and Falkirk all made it through to the second round of the Premier Sports Cup with comfortable home victories on Saturday. Motherwell and Hearts had already booked their places in Sunday's draw along with European qualifiers Celtic, Rangers, Aberdeen, Hibs and Dundee United, meaning there were nine spaces still up for grabs going into the final weekend of group stage fixtures. Dunfermline still have a chance of qualifying as a best placed runner-up but will rely on Saints failing to beat Ayr, who are all but through as long as they do not lose heavily in Paisley. Falkirk sealed top spot in Group A by defeating Spartans 4-0 at home through goals from Dylan Tait, Scott Arfield and a Calvin Miller brace to leave manager John McGlynn in a positive frame of mind ahead of the start of the club's first Premiership season since 2009-10. "The entertainment value is going to be through the roof here," McGlynn predicted. "That's why we've got 5700 season ticket holders - they like what they see. We're now maybe the underdog in most games. I don't think we'll come up against oppositon in the Premiership that will sit so defensively as Spartans." "My one frustration is there was a little bit of slackness in the last 15 minutes of the game. I know we end up down to 10 men through injury, but it's trying to sustain the levels we've found throughout the game. But it's a work in progress and we'll continue to try and make that better." Livi struck four times in the first half as a 6-0 home win over Kelty Hearts helped them finish as one of the three best runners-up. Robbie Muirhead notched a double, while Andrew Winter, debutant Adam Montgomery, Shane Blaney and Stevie May were also on target. Partick maintained their perfect record to win Group B with a 3-1 victory at Ross County, while Stranraer beat 10-man Queen of the South 1-0 in the other match in the section. A 2-2 draw would have been enough to take both teams through, but Steven Buchanan's 89th minute winner meant only the Wasps progressed. In the other match, Dundee saved some face after their humiliating start by making it back-to-back wins with a 5-0 triumph at home to Montrose. With Hearts already having finished top of Group E, Dunfermline gave themselves a chance of finishing as one of the three best runners-up as they won 2-0 at home to Stirling. The Pars will go through if St Mirren lose to Ayr or draw and fail to pick up a bonus point. The Honest Men have such a good goal difference that they will go through as long as they do not lose heavily.
