Vikrant Massey feels Deepika Padukone ‘deserves' an 8-hour working shift as a ‘young mother', says he plans to do something similar soon

Indian Express16 hours ago
The conversation around limited working hours in the Hindi film industry has intensified following reports that Deepika Padukone exited director Sandeep Reddy Vanga's upcoming film Spirit because the makers did not let her have 8-hour workdays. Among the voices supporting a reform in Bollywood's hectic schedules is actor Vikrant Massey, who recently expressed solidarity with Deepika's stance. Vikrant, who shared the screen with Deepika in Meghna Gulzar's Chhapaak, acknowledged the challenges of implementing an eight-hour workday in a high-stakes industry like Bollywood, but also expressed a personal commitment to push for change.
He shared that he would like to do something similar in the next couple of years and told Firstpost, 'I aspire to do something like that very soon. Maybe in a couple of years… I want to go out and say, we can collaborate, but I would only work for eight hours. But at the same time, it should be a choice. And if my producer cannot accommodate that, because there are also a lot of other things involved when you are making a film…'
He further emphasised that fair trade-offs are necessary if the industry is to adopt more humane working conditions. 'Money plays a very important role, and I will have to reduce my fees as I will be working for eight hours instead of twelve. If I cannot give my producer twelve hours a day, I cannot go out there and not reduce my fee. I ought to reduce my fee. It's a give-and-take, right? And as a young mother, I think she (Deepika) deserves it.'

As it has been widely reported that Deepika was initially set to star opposite Prabhas in Spirit, but according to several reports, her departure came after Sandeep Reddy Vanga allegedly declined several of her requests, including an eight-hour workday, a share in the film's profits, and the flexibility to avoid delivering her lines in Telugu. She has since been replaced by Animal star Triptii Dimri. Amidst this entire controversy, several celebrities, including Ajay Devgn, Kajol, Saif Ali Khan, Neha Dhupia, Mani Ratnam, Vinay Pathak, Pankaj Tripathi, and Kabir Khan, have come out in support of Deepika's demand for an 8-hour shift.
Vikrant is gearing up for the release of Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan, which marks Shanaya Kapoor's Bollywood debut. Deepika has recently signed Atlee's next reincarnation-themed action film starring Allu Arjun and will reportedly also be seen in Shah Rukh Khan's upcoming King, directed by Siddharth Anand.

Metro In Dino Box Office Collection Day 2: After strong growth, Anurag Basu's multi-starrer to cross ₹10 crore

Metro In Dino Box Office Collection Day 2: Filmmaker Anurag Basu's ensemble film Metro... In Dino witnessed over 50% growth at the box office on Saturday. After a slow start on its opening day, the film has more than doubled its collections, showing promising signs. With this, the total business made by the film is ₹ 9.5 crore. The film will cross ₹ 10 crore most likely. Metro... In Dino also witnessed an increase in footfall owing to the weekend. It had an overall 32.20% occupancy on Saturday among Hindi audience. The occupancy was as follows: Delhi NCR held the maximum number of screenings for the Anurag Basu film, along with the highest occupancy of all regions. Following closely is the Bollywood capital, Mumbai. Pune and Bengaluru also did well among other markets across India. Metro In Dino is the spiritual sequel of Anurag Basu's hit, Life In A Metro. The new installment, featuring fresh stories in the familiar format, stars Anupam Kher, Neena Gupta, Pankaj Tripathi, Konkona Sen Sharma, Aditya Roy Kapur, and Sara Ali Khan in the lead roles. The film is racing against Kajol's Maa, Aamir Khan's Sitaare Zameen Par, Brad Pitt's F1 and Scarlett Johansson's Jurassic World: Rebirth at the box office. Talking about the film, Konkona Sen Sharma told Live Mint, "Different people will be able to relate to different aspects of love. A 40-year-old with a child will be able to relate to me and Pankaj Tripathi's story. Someone who is in their 20s will be able to relate to Sara (Ali Khan) and Aditya (Roy Kapur). It's not really that there's a moral or message to love; it's just relatability. It's just life showing we all go through this; you are not alone.' 'Maa' box office collections day 9: Kajol starrer sees modest growth; Collects Rs 29.25 Cr in India

(Picture Courtesy: Facebook) Kajol's horror film 'Maa' continues its steady journey at the box office. After earning Rs 1 crore on its second Friday, the film saw a mild but welcoming boost on Day 9, collecting around ₹1.75 crore, based on early estimates by the Sacnilk website. Now the total collections stand at Rs 29.25 crore in India. Directed with emotional depth and backed by strong performances delivered by Kajol, Ronit Roy, and Indraneil Sengupta, 'Maa' has connected with a niche audience. Though not a mass-market blockbuster, the film has carved out a quiet space with its sensitive storytelling and grounded themes. Occupancy Grows Through the Day Saturday's overall Hindi occupancy stood at 22.07%, but the numbers rose gradually through the day. Morning shows were sparse at just 7.73%. By evening, occupancy had climbed to 26.37%, and night shows touched 32.19%. Pune was among the best-performing cities. It had an overall occupancy hitting 30.25%, and night shows reaching 42%. Kajol Reveals Intense Fights With Ajay Devgn During 'Maa', Shares Emotional Truth Mumbai and NCR regions also contributed to the day's total, though footfall remained modest. Slow and Steady as It Nears ₹30 Cr Mark With Sunday still to go, 'Maa' is expected to cross the Rs 30 crore mark by the end of its second weekend. For a mid-budget family drama without big-ticket action or spectacle, that's a good number Maa - Movie review ETimes rated the film with 3 stars and our official review reads, "Kajol delivers a compelling performance as a mother pushed to the edge, balancing vulnerability with fierce resolve. Kherin Sharma and Rupkatha Chakraborty are both impressive as young girls caught in the storm of ancient evil. Ronit Bose Roy lends solid support as the village sarpanch. While it doesn't reinvent the genre, the film delivers a mythologically rooted horror tale that makes for a decent one-time watch. " While its box office graph hasn't seen major spikes, 'Maa' has shown consistency — and in a market crowded with louder releases, that quiet stability counts. Kajol's performance continues to draw praise, and the film is expected to mint more numbers in the coming days.

‘Thammudu' box office collections day 2: Nithiin starrer struggles; Collects Rs 3.05 cr

(Picture Courtesy: Facebook) 'Thammudu', starring Nithiin and Varsha Bollamma , is off to a subdued start at the box office. After earning Rs 1.90 crore on its opening day, the film witnessed a dip on Saturday, collecting around Rs 1.15 crore, as per early estimates by the Sacnilk website. That brings its total two-day collection to Rs 3.05 crore across India. Occupancy fails to pick up across key cities On Saturday, the film recorded an overall Telugu occupancy of just 14.46%. Morning shows started slow at 11.44%, and even by night, occupancy hovered around 16.68%. Major centres like Hyderabad saw slightly better turnout (15.25% overall), but cities like Bengaluru and Vijayawada remained weak. Chennai, interestingly, showed a relatively higher response with an overall 20.25% occupancy, thanks in part to interest in regional crossover actors like Sapthami Gowda. Still, the numbers weren't enough to make a real impact on Day 2 totals. Thammudu - Official Trailer Can Sunday offer some relief? With Sunday being the final push for weekend collections, all eyes are now on whether Thammudu can recover some ground before weekdays kick in. A good Sunday could take the film past Rs 5 crore, but that depends heavily on stronger word-of-mouth and improved turnout in Tier-2 towns. ETimes review for the film reads, "On the technical front, the film is visually appealing, with cinematographer KV Guhan capturing the tribal locales with flair. Ajaneesh Loknath's background score is atmospheric but rarely elevates the emotional beats. The action choreography is stylised, though several sequences stretch believability, further distancing the viewer from the story's emotional core. Thammudu had all the ingredients for a stirring emotional-action drama, but in trying too hard to be everything, it ends up being less than the sum of its parts. A film that had the potential to hit the bullseye sadly misses the mark." At the moment, 'Thammudu' appears to be facing an uphill battle at the box office. Despite a promising cast and familiar genre elements, the film hasn't quite clicked with the audience — at least not yet.
