The Irishman is back in Portrush for this week's Open Championship, and was immediately reminded of his boozy celebrations six years ago.
'That's an interesting first question, isn't it? We're here to talk about golf and all anybody wants to talk about is drinking,' the Ryder Cup star said.
Rewind to 2019 and Lowry gave the world an exhibition on how to celebrate a sporting triumph with a week-long party.
He also shared plenty of images on Instagram of his party to toast his victory at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth in 2022 when he was joined by pop star and avid golf fan Niall Horan.
It's an image that Lowry is keen to downplay these days… although needless to say he would probably do it all again should he triumph this weekend back at his favourite course.
Lowry said: Golf's a funny game where you lose more than you win, so when you win you need to enjoy those victories.
"I'll let people believe what they want to believe (about my drinking). The people close to me know what I'm like.
'I do enjoy it from time to time but I know when I need to put my head down.
"You can't be at the top of any sport unless you apply yourself."

Lowry admitted that he failed to spot the giant mural celebrating his Open win - even though it is about 25 feet high!
The painting of Lowry raising the Claret Jug at Portrush covers the entire side of a house, and is just around the corner from the course.
But when he made his first trip back to the scene of his greatest triumph, just before the Irish Open last September, Lowry and his team forgot to make the small detour.
He said: 'I'll be completely honest, we were in a rush leaving Portrush, and we totally forgot about going in to see it!
'I swear to God, we were ten miles down the road, and we suddenly realised we didn't get a picture of me standing in front of it, which we'd fully intended to do.
'By then it was too late to turn back, because we were on our way to the Irish Open at County Down. But I've seen it since, and I think it's pretty cool what they did there.
'People keep sending me pictures standing beside it - some of them I can't say what they're doing in it!

"I've done something special in my life, and they've acknowledged that, and I think that's pretty cool too.'
Lowry is currently 18th in the world rankings and so far this season has finished tied for 42nd at The Masters, and missed the cut at the US Open and the PGA Championship.
He admits he has struggled to work out why it all clicked at The Open in 2019 and why he has been unable to repeat the feat since.
Lowry said: "I've spent six years trying to work that out. My results were really good going into it.
'I was playing solid golf, then I came to a place I knew and loved. It all clicked. I was playing some of the best golf of my life.
'A few people close to me have said they knew I was ready - I wish they'd told me because I didn't think it.
'I was quite up-tight about it but that's just because you want to play so well. You never really know why. It just happened and I count myself quite lucky.'
Lowry said the key could be playing poorly in the practice rounds, so his expectations are lowered and his focussed sharpened.
He said: 'Here in 2019, I had a meltdown because I felt like I wasn't going to play well but that focuses me.
'If I get my complacency away and my expectations down, I'm at my best. I played well the last two days so that's not good.
"I just need to play s**t for a few days and everything will be alright.'

Xander Schauffele trying to ‘piece way back' ahead of Open defence

Defending Open champion Xander Schauffele admits it was humbling to see the 'perfect storm' which brought him two majors in three months last summer disappear. A year ago the 31-year-old added the Claret Jug to his US PGA title in a stellar season which also brought 13 other top-10 finishes. However, a rib injury in December restricted him to just one appearance in the first three months of this year and any hope he had of continuing his momentum was lost. 'Going from on top of the moon to, you know, knocked off completely, it's a humbling thing for sure,' Schauffele told the PA news agency at an event for sponsors Callaway in Portrush's famous Harbour Bar. 'Winning my first major, getting the monkey off my back, came at a perfect time – if you want to, call it a perfect storm. 'Feeling completely free and playing unbelievable golf, it's a pretty dangerous thing so I felt like I was riding that wave. 'So I'm just trying to piece my way back, gain a little bit of confidence each and every week with each and every shot to be honest.' His confidence received a boost with only his second top-10 finish in 12 events at last week's Scottish Open. Performing well on a links course was ideal preparation for the defence of the Claret Jug he won at Troon, but the American does not really view it in that manner. 'It's a strange thing to defend when the venue changes. When I handed over the Claret Jug on Monday morning it felt like a defence, but when I'm on the property I'm not remembering the shots I hit when I won,' added Schauffele. 'I'm trying to relearn the course, learn how far the ball's going, what the winds are doing, what bunkers you can and can't hit it in. So it's a weird thing.' What does not change, however, is the fact he has two majors under his belt to give him valuable experience. He said: 'I don't think it hurts. I think it's one of those things where, if I can get myself in a position, I've done it twice now. There'll be a pack of guys who have done it more than that and then there'll be a pack of guys who've never done it. 'So it'll give me a slight advantage in that moment, but we're far away from that and I'm trying to focus on some small things to start. 'My advantage will be if I can put myself in a good position come the weekend.'

The Open: Weather warning in force as Shane Lowry starts out after Rory McIlroy thrills fans in all-NI trio

live | We'll bring you updates here across the week Former Irish Open champion Jon Rahm has hailed his LIV Golf team-mate Tom McKibbin as 'phenomenal', while Tuesday practice at The Open could be impacted as a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms has been issued. The Met Office has warned of potential disruption not just at Royal Portrush but across Northern Ireland between 11am and 5pm. As on Monday – when play was twice halted due to a threat of lightning – it could underline the wisdom of Rory McIlroy's surprise early start. For the second day in a row, he stole a march on the crowds by sneaking out for a 7am practice round in preparation for The Open Championship, this time accompanied by fellow Northern Irishmen Tom McKibbin and Darren Clarke. The trio were getting their second look at the course after McIlroy did the same on Monday morning having raced over from Scotland, before addressing the media in the afternoon, talking about how he has learned from his approach to 2019. Who is Rory McIlroy and what is golf's Career Grand Slam? Tuesday is set to be another busy day in the interview room as World No.1 Scottie Scheffler, defending champion Xander Schauffele, two-time Irish Open champion Jon Rahm and former US Open champion Bryson DeChambeau are all due to speak ahead of the tournament.. Shane Lowry headed out for his Tuesday practice round at 12.36pm, starting at the first. Follow along with all the week's action right here on our live blog: 12 minutes ago Gareth Hanna Worth popping over to the first tee So the three NI-interest may have come and gone but there's plenty more talent out there. In fact, arriving on the first tee right now is 2019 champion Shane Lowry, alongside Americans Brian Harman and Andrew Novak. Elsewhere, Xander Schauffele, Keegan Bradley and Patrick Cantlay are out together again on 13 just behind Padraig Harrington. On the front nine, Robert MacIntyre is on the fourth. 16 minutes ago Gareth Hanna You never know who you'll bump into Former Northern Ireland football star Chris Brunt is at The Open today. He's enjoying the practice day and will be back at the weekend. Chris is a fine golfer himself and plays off a handicap of five. Gareth Hanna How's the weather holding up? Thankfully, the weather warning hasn't lived up to its early promise of thunderstorms and flooding - it's all still looking pretty rosy here! As proof, here's the most recent photo filed, of Japan's Takumi Kanaya putting on the 16th green at Calamity Corner. Looks bliss, eh? 49 minutes ago Gareth Hanna THE Rory shot on 18 Absolute chef's kiss moment from our photographer John Dickson on 18 with these shots of Rory hitting his approach in towards the wraparound grand stand. And scroll to the 'making of' image with John in the black jacket a red top standing beside Rory's caddy Harry Diamond. 59 minutes ago Gareth Hanna In photos: Rory and his legion of fans The Holywood star took 15 minutes with fans signing autographs after yesterday's round and it was even longer today, with the crowd even bigger. That'll be the continuing trend as the week goes on. Today 10:39 AM Gareth Hanna Tom McKibbin: In focus Our Chief Sports Reporter Steven Beacom is going to have a long read on the 22-year-old from Holywood later as the way he was striking the ball in practice this morning has set a few tongues wagging round Royal Portrush. He had one win on the DP World Tour - the European Open in 2023 - before shifting to LIV Golf in January this year. That move - as money-spinning as it is - has meant his access to major tournaments since then has been a little more limited than would ordinarily have been the case. He has played in three so far, with a T41 placed finish at last year's US Open, T66th at the PGA Championship last year and T50s at the same tournament this year. He has qualified to be here this wee care of a top 25 placed finish in the DP World Tour's Race to Dubai last year - so he'll find it even harder to be in majors going forward. If he could bag a top 10 finish this week, it would secure his Open spot next year at least. On the betting front, he's a 110-1 shot to end this week with the Claret Jug. There'll certainly be a few people watching with interest. His long, loose swing, laid-back attitude and long-hitting made for an eye-catching watch for the fans out on the course early on Tuesday. Today 10:08 AM Gareth Hanna Rory true to his word After promising fans all day that he would sign after his round, he's still doing just that. How long do you think it would take him to get through this lot? Today 10:01 AM Gareth Hanna Shots for the gallery Tom McKibbin hits one in close on the 18th…. And Rory hits it closer. The autograph section is PACKED waiting for these guys to sign various bits of merchandise. A HUGE roar as Rory holes a putt. It's just a taster of what we're in for this week. Today 09:53 AM Major winner on why he's 'jealous' of Tom McKibbin A man well known to the north coast has been full of praise of Northern Ireland's Tom McKibbin. Jon Rahm was speaking to the media this morning and, when asked about his fellow LIV golfer McKibbin, the 2021 US Open and 2023 Masters champion explained why he's 'jealous' of the 22-year-old. He said: "Tom McKibbin should be really looking forward to this week, being a member here and being from Northern Ireland. He's a fantastic young man. For a 24-year-old to be as calm and collected as he is is quite phenomenal. He's quiet by nature, but even in competition when things go wrong, he stays quite calm, and it's just remarkable and an incredible gift to have for a young player. I don't think I can relate to that whatsoever, so I'm a little bit jealous of that. I think it's going to serve him very well in the long run. "I think he's obviously internally processing the same emotions that all of us are processing, but outwardly he stays really, really calm, and that helps him quite a bit, on top of having a fantastic golf swing. I don't know what it is about Northern Ireland, but they have two of the most beautiful golf swings ever produced in golf. He's a fantastic golfer in general. He's got all the tools he needs to succeed in this game, and so far in his early career, he's done so." Today 09:44 AM Gareth Hanna 'Have a nice hike' Looks like it's the 3-wood off 18 for Darren as his caddy hands out the club and heads off down the fairway, opting not the head up the hill to the tee. Darren takes time to sign a young fan's flag as he heads to the tee. Only an iron for the two big hitters. It's all about playing for position on 18. Hit it into the width of the fair and then worry about the iron shot into the green. Although Tom also tested out a wood. When you can hit as straight as that you may as well take the extra yards! Today 09:40 AM Gareth Hanna Who's the big hitter? I'm not overly surprised to see one of the balls in the greenside bunker belongs to McKibbin. Rory's first drive was just short on the left and his second also found the bunker. Darren a little further back, as is understandable for a man of his vintage. Rory gives the fans a cheer with a tasty bunker shot in tight, and a chuckle when he taps in a 10-foot-plus putt with a wedge. Sure it's easy! Today 09:35 AM Gareth Hanna Let the course do the work The trio have launched their drives down the short, downhill 17th. All they need to do here is get it sent out straight and let the hill take it down to the green. Avoiding the bunkers is easier said than done, and two of the four drives that came over the hill ended up in the green side trap. There are worse places for these guys to be. This is a great place for fans to watch as the green backs on to the par three 13th. So if you're coming down this week, take my tip to get a grand stand spot here for a bit. Today 09:14 AM Gareth Hanna Yellow weather warning issued Not the news the fans want to hear as the Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms between 11am and 5pm today. The warning impacts all of NI and the Met Office have said the storms "could produce 15-20 mm of rain in less than an hour, with a few spots seeing 30-40 mm in a few hours. Isolated hail and lightning strikes will be additional hazards." It could certainly cause problems not just here but across NI as the Met Office says driving conditions and public transport could be impacted, flooding of some homes and businesses is possible along with loss of power. NI issued rain and thunder weather warning with potential travel disruption and risk of flooding The Met Office has issued a weather warning across the whole of Northern Ireland with potential travel disruption as a result. Today 09:08 AM Gareth Hanna Who else is on the course? Not that anybody in the crowd cares about watching anybody else out there but there are plenty more around. Currently out there are the likes of Phil Mickelson, who is a hole or two behind Rory and the lads. Elsewhere, Louis Oosthuizen just teed off on the tenth with Justin Thomas coming behind on nine and Ryan Fox on eight. Sepp Straka is back on the picturesque fifth and Francesco Molinari is on the third. while on the practice ground hitting balls are Padraig Harrington, Patrick Reed, Henrik Stenson, Matteo Manassero and Matthew Jordan. Today 08:52 AM Adam McKendry Birdie blitz McKibbin converts that birdie on 13 - could he be a dark horse this week? He's been trending the right direction on LIV, finishing in the top-five in Andalucía at the weekend, so maybe this is when it clicks at a Major for him... Today 08:46 AM Gareth Hanna A laugh a minute These early photos capture the mood among the trio pretty accurately Today 08:42 AM Finally a Ror McIlroy holes a long birdie putt on 12 and the crowd responds. Managed to gouge it out of the fescue and then make up and down. Tom McKibbin responds by hitting a dart to about three feet on the par-three 13th. What a shot! Today 08:31 AM Gareth Hanna Late bird still catches a little worm There is a constant flow of fans making their way from the entrance through the course and out towards the back nine where Rory is playing.

'Claret Jug is most special one'

It has been 37 years since a Spaniard won The Open - back in 1988 when the late Seve Ballesteros claimed his third Rahm is well aware. He's had three top-10s in his past four Opens and warmed up for this week with a runner-up finish at last week's LIV golf event in Andalucia, in his home country."The Open Championship is the most prestigious event you can win in golf," stated the 2021 US Open and 2023 Masters champion. "For my understanding of the game and the history, the Claret Jug is the most special one. "There's an order to it too because it changes venues, so if you can win it in St Andrews, I don't think anything in golf can come close to that. "It's the home of golf. Golf started in this part of the world. It's the oldest championship we have, and that's what makes it so special - the type of golf we play, the links courses where in theory it is meant to be played, the elements, the weather, it's quite unique. I don't think there's a word to describe it, but all together it's what makes it so special."
