"Bullying can be answered with bullying...": Union Minister Ramdas Athawale on Raj Thackeray's remark
'Love for Marathi can be understood, but the feeling of opposing the Hindi language is not right. Raj Thackeray should tell MNS workers that bullying is not right. Bullying can be answered with bullying. Beating someone is wrong. The Devendra Fadnavis government should take action against such people, and they should be punished,' Athawale told ANI.
Earlier, at a joint rally alongside Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray advised his party workers to exercise restrain while dealing with citizens who refuse to speak Marathi, however, 'if someone shows useless drama' then he advised them to hit them below their eardrums.
'Be it Gujarati or anyone else here, must know Marathi, but there is no need to beat people for that if they don't speak Marathi. But if someone shows useless drama, you must hit below their eardrums. I tell you one more thing: if you beat someone, don't make a video of the incident. Let the person beaten up tell that he has been beaten up, you don't need to tell everyone that you have beaten someone,' he said.
Athawale also claimed that the reunion of the Thackeray brothers would only cause an electoral loss to the Maha Vikas Aghadi.
'Raj Thackeray and Uddhav Thackeray have come together; this is a very good thing. This will benefit the Mahayuti more, because there will be a division in the Maha Aghadi. The Mahayuti will also get more than sixty per cent of Marathi votes in BMC elections...' he said.
Shiv Sena leader Shaina NC said that the Thackeray brothers have reunited only for the political posturing and there is nothing significant about this development.
'After 20 years, the Thackeray brothers have come together, and good luck to them, but it is nothing but political posturing. Do understand that for every election where Uddhav Thackeray has fought, there has been an alliance that he's formed and broken. This is a characteristic of a chameleon... People feel betrayed because, for the sake of power, Uddhav Thackeray and these alliances have been anti-Hindu. Do understand that Hindu Hriday Samrat Balasaheb Thackeray had a philosophy and ideology. This is only convenience and posturing by two unreliable parties...' she said.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday said that he must be receiving the blessings of Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray after the estranged Thackeray cousins, Uddhav and Raj, shared the public stage for the first time in nearly 20 years.
The remarks of the Maharashtra Chief Minister came in response to Raj Thackeray's veiled attack on the former, where the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief stated, 'What Balasaheb could not do, Devendra Fadnavis did it'.
'I express my gratitude to Raj Thackeray that he gave me the credit for the coming together of both the brothers; I must be getting the blessings of Balasaheb Thackeray. I was told that there would be a victory rally, but there was also a speech of 'rudaali'. Not a single word was spoken about Marathi... The Mumbai Municipal Corporation was under their control for 25 years. Still, they did not do any work that could be shown,' Chief Minister said.
'We changed the face of Mumbai under the leadership of PM Modi. They are jealous of the work we did for Mumbai, but the public knows everything, and everyone is on our side,' he added.
On the language row brewing up in the state, CM Fadnavis said that the ideology of Hindutva takes everyone.
'We are Marathi, we are proud of being Marathi, we are proud of the Marathi language, but at the same time, we are also Hindus; our Hindutva takes everyone along,' he said.
Reacting to a viral video from Maharashtra's Thane district showing a shop owner being assaulted allegedly for not speaking in Marathi, Union Minister Chirag Paswan strongly condemned the incident.
Speaking to reporters in Vaishali on Friday, Bihar, Paswan said, 'It is beyond my understanding how many divisions will be created among Indians -- sometimes in the name of region, sometimes language, religion, or caste.'While advocating for pride in one's mother tongue, the minister urged for sensitivity and mutual respect. Marathi medium helped my conceptual understanding in school: CJI Gavai
Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai turned emotional on recalling the moment he fulfilled his father's dream by becoming a judge and also highlighted on Sunday the benefits of studying in his Marathi mother tongue, claiming that it helped him in better conceptual understanding. The CJI virtually held back his tears as he opened his heart at a lawyers' event in Maharashtra, saying, 'I am happy my father's dream to see me become a judge has come true.' The CJI, the first Buddhist to occupy the top post, fondly remembered his father and his early days in the legal profession at the 161st-anniversary celebrations of the Advocates Association of Western India (AAWI), an organisation he joined in 1983. On Sunday, the CJI visited Chikitsak Samuh Shirodkar School in Girgaon, reminiscing about his childhood memories. Having studied from primary to secondary levels at this very institution, he expressed deep gratitude to the teachers who shaped his early life. Speaking at the school, Chief Justice Gavai said, 'Whatever height I have reached today, my teachers and this school have played a significant role in it. The education and values I received here gave direction to my life.' 'My journey in public speaking began on this very stage. Through speech competitions and cultural programmes, I gained confidence. It is because of those opportunities that I am what I am today,' he recalled. The CJI added, 'I studied in a Marathi-medium school. Studying in one's mother tongue helps in better conceptual understanding, and also instils strong values that stay with you for life.' Justice Gavai toured the classrooms, library, and art section of the school, interacting warmly with his old classmates and reliving fond memories. The heartfelt tribute given by the students was a deeply emotional and proud moment for him. His visit was a matter of great honour and inspiration for the school. Present on the occasion were Maharashtra's Skill Development Minister and Mumbai City Guardian Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha, Bombay High Court Justice Madhav Jamadar, Chikitsak Samuh President Kishore Rangnekar, Secretary Dr Gurunath Pandit, Principal Sanchita Gawde, and other dignitaries. Justice Gavai comes from a distinguished background. His father, Ramakrishna Suryabhan Gavai, was a prominent Ambedkarite leader and founder of the Republican Party of India (RPI). Fondly known as Dadasaheb, the senior Gavai was also a member of the Lok Sabha from Amravati and served as the Governor of Bihar, Sikkim, and Kerala between 2006 and 2011 during the tenure of the Congress-led UPA government. He passed away in 2015, four years before his son's elevation to the Supreme Court. Justice Gavai was elevated as a Judge of the Supreme Court on May 24, 2019. In the six years before his elevation, he was a part of around 700 Benches dealing with matters pertaining to a variety of subjects, including constitutional and administrative law, civil law, criminal law, commercial disputes, arbitration law, electricity law, education matters and environmental law. He has authored around 300 judgments, including that of the Constitution Bench on various issues, upholding the rule of law and safeguarding the fundamental rights, human rights and legal rights of citizens. Appointed as an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court in November 2003, Justice Gavai became a permanent Judge in November 2005.

Ashish Shelar Compares MNS' Assault Over Marathi With Pahalgam Attack: ‘What's The Difference?'
Ashish Shelar said while terrorists had targeted tourists in Pahalgam based on their religion, people were being attacked in the state on linguistic lines, which was disappointing. Amid the ongoing language row in Maharashtra, state minister and BJP leader Ashish Shelar on Sunday triggered a row after he drew parallels between the recent attacks on non-Marathi speaking people in Mumbai and the April 22's Pahalgam terror attack, saying that the victims in both cases were 'Hindus". 'In Pahalgam, people were killed because of their religion. Here in Maharashtra, Hindus are being assaulted only because of the language they speak. What's the difference?" Shelar said while addressing a press conference in Mumbai as quoted by news agency PTI. He further said while terrorists had targeted tourists in Pahalgam based on their religion, people were being attacked in the state on linguistic lines, which was disappointing. 'All these incidents cause pain, suffering, and mental distress. In Pahalgam, they shot them after asking about their religion. And here they beat up the innocent Hindus just because of the language they speak. Such cases create disturbance…" he said as quoted by news agency ANI. #WATCH | Mumbai: On Marathi language row, Maharashtra Minister Ashish Shelar says, 'All these incidents cause pain, suffering, and mental distress. In Pahalgam, they shot them after asking about their religion. And here they beat up the innocent Hindus just because of the… — ANI (@ANI) July 6, 2025 In one of the biggest attacks in Jammu and Kashmir, Lashkar-linked terrorists opened fire on a group of tourists in Pahalgam on Tuesday, April 22, killing at least 26 people, including foreign tourists, and injuring many others. The Resistance Front (TRF), a Lashkar offshoot, claimed responsibility for the attack, although it later backtracked after massive global outrage. The minister further took a veiled attack on Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray and his cousin and MNS chief Raj Thackeray, who reunited on Saturday at a joint rally for the cause of Marathi people, saying that the state is watching how some leaders are "enjoying other Hindus being beaten up". Shelar later asserted that the BJP would defend the dignity of Marathi people, and would stand by non-Marathi residents and ensure their protection. 'Marathi is not a political issue for us," he said. Referring to speeches made at the joint rally of Uddhav and Raj Thackeray, he said, 'As far as yesterday's program is concerned, one brother's speech is incomplete, and the other's is irrelevant. What Raj Thackeray said was not complete. He discussed Marathi, but did not elaborate on the entire topic." The Slapgate Row Shelar's remarks came amid heightened tensions following multiple incidents in Mumbai where workers of Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) attacked shopkeepers and migrant workers allegedly for speaking Hindi instead of Marathi. Recently, a viral video showed a shopkeeper in the Mira-Bhayandar area being thrashed by individuals reportedly affiliated with the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) for allegedly refusing to speak in Marathi. In another incident, five MNS workers were arrested for vandalising the office of Mumbai-based share market investor Sushil Kedia's office in Worli after he declared he would not speak Marathi and dared the party chief Raj Thackeray. Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis had earlier warned of strict legal action against those engaging in violence in the name of language. The row over speaking Marathi is escalating into a major political flashpoint ahead of the civic polls. Union Minister Backs Shelar Meanwhile, Union Minister Ramdas Athawale supported Shelar's statement, saying, 'Just as terrorists targeted tourists in Pahalgam based on religion, Raj Thackeray's party workers are attacking people asking them to speak Marathi." He also posed a question to Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray that 'if people from Hindu community are being attacked, would you sit quietly, do you not follow Balasaheb's line of thinking?" What's The Three-Language Row? The Hindi language row erupted after the BJP-led Maharashtra government issued a Government Resolution (GR) making the learning of the language compulsory in primary schools. Amid the growing backlash from MNS and Shiv Sena (UBT), the government amended the GR to make Hindi the "generally" third language before finally withdrawing both orders on June 29. The issue of Marathi identity and the "imposition" of Hindi is believed to be a catalyst for reuniting Uddhav and Raj Thackeray after almost 20 years on Saturday at a joint "victory" rally to celebrate the government's decision to scrap the GRs under the three-language policy. With elections to the high-profile Mumbai civic body and other municipal corporations approaching, the BJP waded into the language row, with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis asserting that those resorting to violence over the Hindi language will face legal action. Addressing the joint rally, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray defended the Marathi pride, saying, We are goons if we have to do hooliganism for justice. On his part, Raj Thackeray asked the MNS cadres not to attack anyone over the language without provocation.
