When Brian Schottenheimer was first promoted to head coach, he was tasked with getting the franchise back on track following a lackluster 2024 campaign. Now, he finds himself having to keep the team focused on the field while the organization deals with an ongoing saga behind the scenes.
Now in the final year of his rookie contract, Micah Parsons is eligible to ink an extension with the Cowboys. Seeing that he's grown into one of the NFL's most impactful defensive players, he's in line for a sizable raise.
Over the past few months, things have evolved from negotiations to a full-blown standoff. Earlier this week, Parsons took his frustrations to social media with a jaw-dropping message. He turned the football world on its side when he sounded off on how things have unfolded while requesting a trade from the Cowboys.

Although things don't look great between Parsons and the Cowboys right now, Schottenheimer doesn't seem too fazed by the situation. When asked if he expects the All-Pro linebacker to be in uniform Week 1, he is hopeful things will eventually work themselves out.
"Micah is a competitor. I hope to see Micah out there soon. When the business gets worked out, it gets worked out," Schottenheimer told reporters Saturday.

When Parsons does land a new contract, it is sure to be a lucrative offer. Fellow top defensive stars such as Myles Garrett and T.J. Watt have landed deals that pay them around $40 million annually. Seeing that the Cowboys star is equally impactful of a talent, he is sure to command a similar price tag.

Despite Parsons' ongoing back-and-forth with the front office and ownership has gotten very public, Schottenheimer doesn't feel like it's been a distraction. He touched on how the rest of the group is putting all their time and energy into getting ready for the upcoming season.
"Our guys are focused on what we're trying to build," Schottenheimer said, via The Athletic. "As we get closer to a game week, it's exciting. We got the (Los Angeles) Rams coming in here next week. There are plenty of things for us to focus on. We're almost through the install. Our guys have a very singular focus, and that's getting better and getting ready to have a hell of a practice today."
The Cowboys are set to kick off their preseason schedule next weekend against the LA Rams.

Micah Parsons' viral Steelers trade comments resurface amid Cowboys contract drama

Micah Parsons sent shockwaves through the NFL with his trade request becoming official — but this wasn't the first time he's discussed leaving the Cowboys, as his viral Steelers trade comments have begun to resurface on social media. Back in February, Parsons sat down with former Steelers CB turned CBS Sports analyst Bryant McFadden in a one-on-one interview. McFadden asked Parsons if he rocked with the Steelers and claimed he could see the young defender wearing the Black and Gold — and in response, the Cowboys superstar dropped a bombshell. "Yeah, I do," Parsons said, confirming his interest in the Steelers. "I said, if I ever returned home, it was going to be Pittsburgh." Parsons, a Pennsylvania native, would surely be welcomed with open arms in Pittsburgh — but the path to making that dream a reality is nearly impossible, potentially requiring the Steelers to part ways with another high-profile edge rusher. DK Metcalf off to fast start at Steelers training camp

The Pittsburgh Steelers took a huge calculated risk this offseason. One of the moves to completely rebuild the offense was trading for wide receiver DK Metcalf. The first thought was the Steelers passing game would be explosive with Metcalf and George Pickens together on the Steelers. Then the Steelers pulled the rug out from under us and traded Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys. We assume this was always the goal and the Steelers never planned to go into the season with both guys on the roster. Now we are watching Metcalf get off to a fast start at Steelers training camp as the team's No. 1 wide receiver and Pickens is off to just as hot a start in Dallas. All season long, we will be keeping a close eye on Metcalf and Pickens to see which player puts together the better season. Pickens won't have to be the Cowboys No. 1 receiver and should have a solid chance to play well without dealing with the type of coverage his teammate CeeDee Lamb will face. Meanwhile, Metcalf is far and away the Steelers' top receiver and will be the focus of opposing defenses every week. Metcalf could see more targets but will that equate to more catches and more yards? Cast a vote in our poll on X and let us know who you think will end up with the better season? Cowboys' Micah Parsons requests trade, did Steelers' T.J. Watt play a role?

One of the NFL's best edge rushers has officially requested a trade, as Micah Parsons took to social media to declare his desire to leave the Cowboys amid ongoing contract talks — but one can't help but wonder if Steelers star T.J. Watt inadvertently played a major role in the decision. After months of failed negotiations with Dallas — and continuous shots from Cowboys owner Jerry Jones — Parsons made the trade request official with a social media post captioned, "Thank you Dallas!" Here is a short excerpt from his message: "Up to today the team has not had a single conversation with my agent about a contract," Parsons wrote on X. "Not one demand has been made by my agent about money, years, or anything else. Still, I stayed quiet, but again, after repeated shots at myself and all the narratives, I have made a tough decision. I no longer want to play for the Dallas Cowboys. My trade request has been submitted to Stephen Jones personally." While Parsons alluded to other factors in play — like refusing to partake in negotiations without his agent present — the Cowboys star defender hinted at Watt's record-breaking deal and other edge rushers' contracts during training camp. 'When you go around the league, you see these other teams taking care of their best guys," Parsons said a few weeks ago. "I see T.J. got taken care of. Maxx [Crosby] got taken care of. Myles [Garrett] got taken care of, and he's got two years left on his deal. You see a lot of people in our league getting taken care of, and you wish you had that same type of energy." Despite claims that the trade request didn't stem from financial demands, his camp mentality tells a different story — and the Pittsburgh Steelers deserve more credit for getting Watt extended long-term, even if it meant making him the highest-paid non-QB in the NFL.
