‘Boardwalk Empire' Star Michael Pitt Arrested on Sexual Abuse Charges

Yahoo09-05-2025
Michael Pitt, an actor known for roles in 'Boardwalk Empire' and 'Dawson's Creek,' has been arrested in New York City on charges of alleged sexual abuse.
According to the indictment and court records obtained by Variety, Pitt was arrested and arraigned at Kings Supreme Criminal Court in Brooklyn on May 2 over four separate alleged incidents between April 2020 and August 2021. He was charged with two counts of first-degree sexual abuse, counts of a criminal sexual act in the first and third degree, two counts of second-degree assault, two counts of attempted assault and one count of strangulation in the second degree. He pleaded not guilty to all charges, and according to TMZ, posted bail and was released from custody. His next court appearance is set for June 17.

The New York Post, which first broke the news of Pitt's arrest, reported that the charges stem from an ex-girlfriend. The indictment alleges that, between April 2020 and August 2021, Pitt subjected her to sexual contact by means of forcible compulsion, engaged in oral sex with her without consent, attacked her with a four-by-four piece of wood and cinderblock and 'applied pressure on the throat or neck' causing 'stupor, loss of consciousness or other physical injury.'
Jason Goldman, an attorney for Pitt, told Variety in a statement: 'Unfortunately, we live in a world where somebody like Mr. Pitt — an accomplished professional who would never so much as contemplate these crimes — can be arrested on the uncorroborated word of an unhinged individual. In reality, this baseless claim is suspiciously raised some four or five years after the alleged incident, at a time when the two parties were in a completely consensual and voluntary relationship. This case will be dismissed.'
Pitt has had a previous run-in with the law, occurring after the alleged sexual abuse. In July 2022, he was arrested and charged with assault and petty larceny after striking another man several times and taking his phone. That September, he was hospitalized after being accused of throwing items at people from a rooftop.
The actor has most recently been working in film, starring in three projects in 2023: the thriller 'Asphalt City,' crime drama 'Reptile' and boxing film 'Day of the Fight.'

Brad Pitt shares a story about Eagles fans, friendship, and humble pie

Here's an amazing story about how a famous Eagles fan served Brad Pitt a nice helping of humble pie. There may not be a greater American institution than trash-talking. Okay, fair enough. You may not hear a bigger exaggeration all summer. We can all agree on the theory, though. Philadelphia Eagles fans had to listen to a Kansas City Chiefs fan base brag for more than two years about a Super Bowl victory. Sure, Chiefs Kingdom seemingly forgot their team was aided by their groundsman's slippery field and a referee's attempt to steal the spotlight late. Still, after Philadelphia annihilated Kansas City in Super Bowl 59, if anyone had a right to strut, it was Eagles fans. Lo and behold, for whatever reason, more often than not, they took the high road. Two things were learned from all of this. First, Chiefs fans are more annoying than we thought. Second, trash talk is a necessary part of gameday experiences and rivalries, even if those rivalries are of the extended variety. Chiefs homer Brad Pitt is served a slice of humble pie by his friend, Eagles fan Bradley Cooper. Who would have believed this ten years ago? Thanks in part to the bond between two brothers who also happen to be great football players, there's a tie that binds the Eagles and Chiefs. There are other parallels, such as Jason Kelce and Travis Kelce's podcast, and another notable detail. Both organizations have employed one of the greatest coaches in NFL history for over a decade. The Chiefs and Eagles share history after locking horns in two different Super Bowls. Both teams have come out as winners. Recently, the Kelce brothers hosted Brad Pitt on their podcast, New Heights. Pitt, a longtime Chiefs fan, took his opportunity to throw some shade at Eagles fans playfully. One he mentioned was one of their most famous friends, Bradley Cooper. After the Eagles lost to the Chiefs in Super Bowl 57, Pitt presented Cooper with an award at the Santa Barbara Film Awards for his role in the movie Maestro, but no one will forget what he said during the award's presentation. "He's been nominated the 1900th time. You know, if he doesn't get it, it's okay. He's used to it. He's a Philadelphia Eagles fan". Do you see what we mean about Chiefs fans being annoying? Sure, he was joking with an old friend, but Birds fans can be sensitive. Years of disappointment will do that for you. There are times when it feels like disappointment is part of the deal for the Philadelphia sports fan, so Pitt's cold words felt as though they were even colder. So, what was their conversation like after Philadelphia turned the tables with one of the most surprisingly lopsided beatdowns in Super Bowl history? "He was happy this year. We didn't talk for two months ... He gracefully let me hurt." Good for you, Mr. Cooper! Perhaps there are lessons to be learned from all of this. Success is the best revenge. Eagles fans don't always have to twist the knife. Sometimes, silence speaks volumes. Here we sit. As Birds fans enjoy the final stretch of a victory lap before turning the page like their favorite team already has, stunned silence continues to cover the now-hated Chiefs. That may be the most satisfying aspect about all of this

'Pretty Little Baby' singer Connie Francis, 87, hospitalized

Singer Connie Francis was hospitalized in Florida Wednesday with 'extreme pain,' forcing her to pull out of an Independence Day show, just weeks after the octogenarian joined TikTok amid the virality of her music. The 87-year-old 'Pretty Little Baby' vocalist, nicknamed The Queen of Song, announced in a Facebook post that she was 'back in hospital' after 'undergoing tests and checks to determine the cause(s) of the extreme pain.' 'I had hoped to take part in [Cousin] Brucie's show for Independence Day, having had to cancel a previous slot a few weeks ago when receiving treatment on my hip,' the Newark native said early afternoon. 'Sadly, I had to let him know that I again had to withdraw. My thanks for your many get well soon messages. I will endeavor to keep you updated.' By early evening, the Golden Globe winner said that she was in a private room, 'following a series of tests and examinations in Intensive Care' and once again thanked fans 'for your kind thoughts, words and prayers. They mean so much!' Francis has not yet detailed her condition, though family sources told TMZ she's contended with orthopedic issues in recent years. Just last month, Francis joined TikTok amid the 'huge buzz' her 1962 hit 'Pretty Little Baby' sparked on the platform. 'To think that a song I recorded 63 years ago is captivating new generations and audiences is truly overwhelming for me. Thank you, TikTok,' said a 'flabbergasted and excited' Francis as she provided her own lip-synced version of the song. At the time of publication, Francis' video has been viewed 16 million times and liked by more than 656,000 users.

Jensen Ackles' new Prime Video action series is on course for No. 1 but critics are calling it ‘predictable,' ‘cliche' and downright ‘bad'

'Countdown' is a new Prime Video original action series featuring 'Supernatural' and 'The Boys' alumnus Jensen Ackles as an LAPD detective who joins a secret task force to investigate a murder and soon stumbles upon a larger conspiracy that threatens all of Los Angeles. Sounds good, right? Well, a lot of Prime Video subscribers seem to have been sold by the elevator pitch, because just over a week after its three-episode premiere on the Amazon-owned streaming service, it's proved quite a ratings hit. 'Countdown' has already surged into the Prime Video top 10 most-watched list, and now has the No. 1 spot in its crosshairs. At the time of writing, it ranks in second place, only behind the glossy adaptation of E. Lockhart's best-selling thriller novel, 'We Were Liars.' With Ackles's dedicated fans giving it a big push, and the hooky premise (who doesn't love a good action-drama series?), I won't be shocked if it shortly rises to the summit of the Prime Video top 10. There's just one problem, according to the critics, not to mention Tom's Guide's own Martin Shore, 'Countdown' is anything but must-binge TV. It might even be downright bad... If you're an Ackles fan who has already started 'Countdown' and thinks I'm being a little harsh in my assessment, I submit the show's Rotten Tomatoes score as evidence for my case. Right now, the Prime Video original holds a poor 31% rating from 13 reviews. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Granted, that's not a huge sample size, but it does give us an indication that this show has some pretty glaring faults. 'Unfortunately, though the show has all of the fundamentals needed for an engaging action series, 'Countdown' grows duller by the episode,' said Aramide Tinubu of Variety. The Prime Video original holds a poor 31% rating from 13 reviews. Meanwhile, The Hollywood Reporter's Daniel Fienberg wasn't much kinder, accusing the show of lacking 'urgency or logic' and even labeling the finale (which doesn't hit Prime Video until September 3) 'head-scratchingly bad.' So if you're hoping it gets better after a weaker start, don't bet on it. It's bad at being suspenseful, it's bad at providing emotional investment and it's bad at being memorable. It feels cynical and uninterested in itself. It provides the bare minimum of every element... then loudly insists it's providing a service,' said TheWrap's Gregory Lawrence. Ouch! Another harsh critic was Nick Schager of The Daily Beast, who wrote, '['Countdown' is] Clunky, simplistic, unbelievable, and inert, it's a show that manages the impressive feat of being generic in absolutely every respect.' Which isn't exactly a glowing recommendation. As noted, TG staff writer Martin Shore was no fan of Ackles' latest TV project either. ''Countdown' is so generic that I quickly found it was washing over me,' said Martin, also pointing out the show is full of 'one-note characters" and 'a lot of time is spent watching middling chatter, or cliche storybeats, or exposition dumps.' So, a critical darling, "Countdown" is not. Of course, it's not especially uncommon for critics and viewers to disagree on a show, and 'Countdown's' saving grace may be its audience score, which sits at 76% on Rotten Tomatoes. Recent RT user reviews call it 'action-packed,' 'fast paced,' and 'worth a watch.' Although the cynic in me does feel it's worth pointing out that many of the latest audience reviews aren't shy about proclaiming their love for Jensen Ackles, so I have to question how many of these positive write-ups might be a little colored by the viewer's own fandom. I know I'm always just a little bit kinder to Ryan Gosling movies as a huge fan of the Canadian actor. I suspect you'll still want to give 'Countdown' a chance if you simply can't skip anything involving Ackles, but if you're looking for something with a more unanimously positive reception, here's a guide to everything new being added to Prime Video in July 2025. You can watch "Countdown" on Prime Video now
