2027 5-star CB praises Texas A&M coaching staff after recent unofficial visit
The focus for Texas A&M coach Mike Elko and his staff this summer remains building the 2026 recruiting class, which is currently ranked fourth nationally with 21 commits, including the recent additions of four-star offensive tackles Avery Morcho and Zaden Krempin. However, Elko has also placed focus on several elite prospects in the 2027 recruiting cycle, including five-star cornerback Joshua Dobson.
On Saturday, June 13, Texas A&M defensive coordinator Jay Bateman, defensive back coach Jordan Peterson and several other staff members hosted Dobson and his family for an unofficial visit, which is a crucial first step to gaining a comfort level with the standout South Carolina native who is being heavily pursued by every top program in the country.
On Friday, during the open media portion of this weekend's UA (Under Armour) Next Future 50 event, Dobson, one of the 50 2027 attendees, spoke to Under Armour All-American Bowl Director Billy Tucker, who briefly discussed his Texas A&M visit and fondness for Mike Elko and the defensive staff:
"I was out there two weeks ago, and, just like everything, coach (Mike) Elko is a DB (defensive back) coach, so that means alot to me right there, and just seeing the stadium (Kyle Field) and just seeing the way they go about things."
For many cornerback and safety prospects in the 2026 class, including five-star commit Brandon Arrington, Mike Elko's background as a defensive coordinator and defensive back coach, developing several current high level NFL starters/contributors is quite the selling point for Dobson, who will now heavily consider the Aggies heading into next spring/summer.
During his 2024 sophomore season, Dobson recorded 48 tackles, three interceptions, and ten pass breakups. According to 247Sports, Dobson is currently positioned as the 7th-ranked prospect in 2the 026 class, the 2nd-ranked cornerback, and the No. 1-ranked prospect in South Carolina.

What does it take to be labeled a "dynamic" player in college football? Dual-threat quarterbacks mix the pro-style pocket passing NFL scout love and the running ability that seems to be taking over the position at large, a chunk of skill position players are recruited as "athletes" while playing multiple positions and then there's Travis Hunter who played at an All-American level on both sides of the ball while at Colorado. Crawford put together a list of college football's 25 most dynamic players of the past 25 years, and there's surprisingly just one Florida Gator on there. While Gators fans may be quick to jump to the most sacred name in all of Gainesville — Tim Tebow — it's not the golden boy who made the cut. Tebow helped popularize the running quarterback, and he did it in a bruising way that hasn't quite been replicated. But his passing lacked at times, and there's a better all-around choice for this list. Percy Harvin. Athlete. "The Gators did an expert job picking and choosing when to incorporate Harvin offensively," wrote Crawford, "whether that meant lining him up next to Tim Tebow in the backfield or breaking him out at receiver. Over this three-year stint in Gainesville, Harvin was instrumental in leading one of the nation's most explosive offenses, averaging 11.6 yards per touch with 32 touchdowns. His 9.2 yards per rushing attempt led the country in 2007, which ironically, was Tebow's Heisman year." Harvin was a video game character in real life. An offensive weapon that demanded the focus of multiple defenders, Florida and Tebow likely wouldn't have the same success without him on the field. His success carried over into the NFL, and he's the kind of name that comes up in water cooler talk, which is the kind of topic Crawford is looking to explore deeper. Paige Bueckers achieved what many athletes have likely dreamed of: putting up historic numbers in front of your favorite player of all-time. Not only did the Wing star get that despite the 94-86 loss to the Fever, she also shared a mid-game moment with idol and fellow Dallas celebrity Kyrie Irving on Friday. Bueckers seemingly didn't have time to catch up with the nine-time All-Star prior to the game, but she dapped up Irving — who attended with his daughter — during the game. UNC basketball releases its full non-conference schedule for 2025-2026 season
Which matchups are you most excited for? As the UNC basketball team inches closer to the start of its 2025-2026 season, anticipation continues building in Chapel Hill. With the exception of Seth Trimble, James Brown and Zayden High, everyone is a newcomer to the Tar Heels' star-studded roster. North Carolina hit the transfer portal hard: bringing in 7-foot center Henri Veesaar, likely starting point guard Kyan Evans, hometown kid Jarin Stevenson, plus a pair of shooting guards in Jonathan Powell and Jaydon Young. Hubert Davis continued to showcase his recruiting prowess, with UNC's 2025 recruiting class including Top-10 recruit Caleb Wilson, plus a pair of combo guards in Derek Dixon and Isaiah Denis. The Tar Heels previously teased fans about their upcoming season, releasing a few non-conference matchups. North Carolina released the rest of their non-conference opponents on Friday, now allowing fans to prepare which nights they'll be in the Dean Dome, on the road, or on their couches. Outside of a road clash with Kentucky, a neutral-site battle with Ohio State, plus a pair of Fort Myers (Fla.) Tip-Off games against Michigan State and St. Bonaventure, you'll notice one eye-popping characteristic about UNC's non-conference schedule: every matchup is in the Dean Dome. The Tar Heels' first official home game will be Monday, November 3 against Central Arkansas, which became Division I in 2010. Four days later, North Carolina will host a highly-anticipated matchup against Kansas, which won in Allen Fieldhouse last year. Radford (Nov. 11), NC Central (Nov. 14) and Navy (Nov. 18) are all winnable games, then UNC faces a strong Atlantic 10 program in St. Bonaventure, followed by a Thanksgiving Day game against Tom Izzo's Spartans. Rupp Arena will be rocking on December 2, as will the Dean Dome on December 7 against Georgetown. USC-Upstate, ETSU and ECU are all teams the Tar Heels should beat handily, while Ohio State will provide a strong challenge.
