P Chidambaram responds to row over his ‘evidence' comment on Pahalgam attack
'Trolls are of different kinds and use different tools to spread misinformation,' Chidambaram posted on X on Monday, 'The worst kind is a troll who suppresses the full recorded interview, takes two sentences, mutes some words, and paints the speaker in a black colour!'
He was responding apparently to Sunday night's X post by BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya, who shared a clip from the Rajya Sabha member's recent interview with The Quint, and accused him and the Congress of giving Pakistan 'the clean chit'.
In the clip, Chidambaram can be seen asking why evidence has not been presented so far about the Pahalgam attackers' identity: "Why have you not apprehended them? Why have you not even identified them?'
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has so far arrested two local men for assisting the terrorists. It says the armed men were Pak nationals but refused to name them until "an appropriate time'.
In his post, BJP's Amit Malviya interpreted Chidambaram's answers in the interview as 'clean chit to Pakistan' by the Congress.
Just before Chidambaram's post, his son Karti, who is a Lok Sabha member, also wrote on X against "those who are trigger happy & jumpy' and urged them to watch the full interview.
He, too, shared a promo clip in which his father questioned the 'complete silence' on the attackers' identity, and why information was being shared 'in bits and pieces by different offices'.
P Chidambaram is set to be part of the Rajya Sabha debate on the Pahalgam attack, Operation Sindoor, and the diplomacy around it, on Tuesday. Lok Sabha would debate these issues on Monday.

Former Chief Minister of Maharashtra and Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan on Thursday maintained the existence of 'Hindu terrorism' hours after an NIA court acquited all six accused in the Malegaon blasts case, a verdict termed victory by the BJP against Congress party's 'saffron terror' narrative. Prithviraj Chavan said that while using the 'saffron terror' term may not be appropriate, it should be called 'Hindu terrorism'. "Don't use the term 'Saffron terrorism'. If you want to describe such acts, use 'Hindu fundamentalist' or 'Hindu terrorism' instead," Chavan told PTI. Reacting on Amit Shah's statement that no Hindu can ever be a terrorist, Chavan said that the first terrorist incident in independent India was carried out by Nathuram Godse, who killed Mahatma Gandhi. "Which religion did he belong to? Terrorism has no religion. This is the BJP's mindset to connect terrorism with religion," said Chavan, contradicting himself minutes after reaffirming 'Hindu terrorism' stance. "After the 42nd Amendment by PM Indira Gandhi, a part was added in fundamental duties of citizens. It was stated that it shall be the duty of the citizens to inculcate the scientific temper, humanism, and the spirit of inquiry... I am just asking the government whether what they are saying is in accordance with temper and the spirit of inquiry. We all are Hindu, but we are not Hindutva fundamentalists," asked Chavan. Earlier during the day, Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis said, "The way the Congress-led UPA government conspired to set the narrative of saffron terrorism, Hindu terrorism and prepared the entire Malegaon case, today it has been exposed... Congress tried to bring the narrative to please its vote bank, especially the vote bank of a particular religion. The work done by Congress to label all Hindus as terrorists, today, the whole country is condemning it. We demand that Congress apologise for calling out terms like Hindu terrorism and saffron terrorism." Mumbai Special National Investigative Agency Court (NIA) on Thursday acquitted all seven accused of being involved in the 2008 blasts in Malegaon, with the court saying the prosecution failed to establish the case beyond a reasonable doubt. A total of seven people were accused, including former MP Sadhvi Pragya, Major (retired) Ramesh Upadhyay, Sudhakar Chaturvedi, Ajay Rahirkar, Sudhankar Dhar Dwivedi (Shankaracharya) and Sameer Kulkarni.

Q: If the AIADMK was able to assert itself in the past, what is the pressure that led EPS to concede more than the BJP, according to you? A: I do not know what exactly it is, but there is surely something that the BJP is now using to control EPS. This is exactly what I oppose. Why does a big party in TN have to listen to the BJP is my concern. Q: Seat sharing is yet to be discussed, isn't it? Would it not be premature to say that the AIADMK is not in a position to dictate? A: The alliance was announced by Union Minister Amit Shah at a press conference in Chennai. If the AIADMK is in a commanding position, EPS should have done it. Instead, he remained silent. The backdrop at the press conference displayed BJP's flag, not AIADMK's. EPS has got entangled in a problem, resulting in this alliance. BJP will go to any extent to accomplish their ideology. In contrast, the AIADMK has its own ideology of 'Annaism'. EPS has completely deviated from AIADMK's ideologies. BJP believes they can advance their 'Sanatana' ideology through the AIADMK. EPS's tone during his ongoing campaign is akin to that of the BJP, as reflected in his (initial) stand that HR & CE funds should not be used to build educational institutions. That is why people like me are leaving. The problem is AIADMK is run only by a group of 7-8 persons. Q: Are you saying those 8 persons are in favor of BJP? A: No, we cannot say that. AIADMK leaders such as D. Jayakumar, Shanmugam, K.P. Munusamy, and many others share the opinion that allying with the BJP would alienate support of minority communities of Christians and Muslims, who together account for 14 percent (of State's population). Q: There are some assembly constituencies where victory is impossible without minorities' support. Are you saying that EPS does not care about winning these constituencies even though it is crucial to come back to power? Why are AIADMK leaders from these constituencies not raising their voices? A: We were all opposed. EPS himself repeatedly assured that there would be no alliance with the BJP. Suddenly, he changed his stance. Many AIADMK leaders are distressed, but they are keeping their feelings to themselves. I am speaking on their behalf. When they read this interview, they will feel glad that I am at least able to speak out now although they are not in a position to say anything. Without the support of minorities, they cannot win. In 2021, even BJP's Vanathi Srinivasan did not use Prime Minister Narendra Modi's photo in pamphlets in some areas while canvassing for votes. That is why she won Coimbatore South by a slender margin. Many AIADMK candidates also avoided using Modi's photos. Q: What was your position on the Citizenship Amendment Act and the ban on triple talaq when you were in the AIADMK? A: When I was an MP, I opposed the bill banning triple talaq in Parliament. AIADMK later supported CAA following BJP's request. I strongly opposed it within the party. The party's stance on these bills mattered then, but now the AIADMK itself is subordinate to the BJP. That is the context I am trying to explain. Please understand. Q: After joining DMK, what was your basis to allege that the BJP will swallow the AIADMK? A: It has destroyed many parties from the north to the south by forming coalitions. One prime example is what happened to former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta's Asom Gana Parishad party. We all know what BJP did to Shiv Sena in Maharashtra. This is their strategy and track record. In such a political scenario, the only leader who can stand up against the BJP is our Chief Minister M.K. Stalin. They are struggling in front of him. To overpower Stalin, the BJP wants to piggyback on the AIADMK and finish it later. Q: Wouldn't AIADMK leaders, who have vast experience, be wary of such strategies, if any? A: They all know this, but they have no other option. With the advantage of the two-leaves symbol, which is with EPS, those who have money may win and become MLAs. Why would they want to risk the chance of sitting in the opposition at least?

ECI's roll revision plan causing unease in Assam

Alleging that the ECI and BJP were working together, Gandhi said, "Within four months in Maharashtra -- from Lok Sabha polls to the assembly polls -- one crore voters have increased. We sought the voters' list from the EC, but they are yet to provide it. We asked for the videos of the booths, but we were not given. The new voters voted for the BJP. In the Lok Sabha polls, our alliance won the polls. Then one crore voters come, and we lose the assembly polls."
