Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd (M&M) has acquired a 58.96 percent stake in SML Isuzu Ltd (SML) from Japan's Sumitomo Corporation and Isuzu Motors Limited. The acquisition, valued at INR 555 crore at INR 650 per share, was announced on Saturday and is seen as a major step in strengthening M&M's position in the country's commercial vehicle market.
Following the deal, M&M will make a mandatory open offer to purchase up to 26 percent additional stake from public shareholders, in line with the Securities and Exchange Board of India's takeover norms.
As part of the transition, SML's Board of Directors has been restructured. Vinod Sahay, currently President for Aerospace & Defence, Trucks, Buses and Construction Equipment at Mahindra Group, has been appointed Executive Chairman of SML Isuzu with effect from August 3, 2025. Dr Venkat Srinivas will assume the role of Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer from August 1, 2025.
The board has also approved a proposal to rename the company SML Mahindra Limited, subject to necessary regulatory and shareholder approvals.
This acquisition is expected to boost M&M's footprint in the segment for vehicles above 3.5 tonnes, where it currently holds a modest 3 percent share. In the sub-3.5 tonne light commercial vehicle category, M&M commands a 54.2 percent market share. The company aims to double its overall commercial vehicle share to 6 percent in the near term, targeting 10–12 percent by fiscal year 2031 and more than 20 percent by 2036.
Founded in 1983, SML Isuzu is a listed player with a strong presence in intermediate and light commercial vehicles, including a 16 percent share in the ILCV bus segment and an extensive nationwide distribution network.

Shares in Asia rally, dollar lower against yen on Fed rate cut bets

By Rocky Swift TOKYO (Reuters) -Shares in Asia rose for a second consecutive session and the U.S. dollar held most of its losses on Tuesday as investors increased bets the Federal Reserve will act to prop up the world's largest economy. U.S. shares rallied on Monday on generally positive earnings reports and increasing bets for a September rate cut from the Fed after disappointing jobs data on Friday. Oil remained lower after output increases by OPEC+ and threats by U.S. President Donald Trump to raise tariffs on India over its Russian petroleum purchases. Japan's Nikkei rallied, with data showing a jump in the nation's service sector activity in July. "There are signs of weakness in parts of the U.S. economy, that plays to the view that maybe not in September, but certainly this year that the Fed's still on course to ease potentially twice," said Rodrigo Catril, senior currency strategist at National Australia Bank. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was up 0.6% in early trade. The Nikkei climbed 0.5% after falling by the most in two months on Monday. The dollar dropped 0.1% to 146.96 yen. The euro was unchanged at $1.1572, while the dollar index, which tracks the greenback against a basket of major peers, edged up 0.1% after a two-day slide. Odds for a September rate cut now stand at about 94%, according to CME Fedwatch, from a 63% chance seen on July 28. Market participants see at least two quarter-point cuts by the end of this year. The disappointing nonfarm payrolls data on Friday added to the case for a cut by the Fed, and took on another layer of drama with Trump's decision to fire the head of labor statistics responsible for the figures. News that Trump would get to fill a governorship position at the Fed early also added to worries about politicisation of interest rate policy. Trump again threatened to raise tariffs on goods from India from the 25% level announced last month, over its Russian oil purchases, while New Delhi called his attack "unjustified" and vowed to protect its economic interests. Second-quarter U.S. earnings season is winding down, but investors are still looking forward to reports this week from companies including Walt Disney and Caterpillar. Tech heavyweights Nvidia, Alphabet and Meta surged overnight, and Palantir Technologies raised its revenue forecast for the second time this year on expectations of sustained demand for its artificial intelligence services. "Company earnings announcements continue to spur market moves," Moomoo Australia market strategist Michael McCarthy said in a note. In Japan, the S&P Global final services purchasing managers' index climbed to 53.6 in July from 51.7 in June, marking the strongest expansion since February. Oil prices were little changed after three days of declines on mounting oversupply concerns, with the potential for more Russian supply disruptions providing support. Brent crude futures were flat at $68.76 per barrel, while U.S. crude futures dipped 0.02% to $66.28 a barrel. Spot gold was slightly higher at $3,381.4 per ounce. [GOL/] The pan-region Euro Stoxx 50 futures were up 0.2%, while German DAX futures were up 0.3% and FTSE futures rose 0.4%. U.S. stock futures, the S&P 500 e-minis, were up 0.2%. Bitcoin was little changed at $114,866.06 after a two-day rally. China's services activity growth hits 14-month high in July, S&P PMI shows

BEIJING (Reuters) -China's services activity expanded at its fastest pace in 14 months in July, fuelled by stronger demand, including a rise in new export orders, a private-sector survey showed on Tuesday. The S&P Global China General Services PMI rose to 52.6 in July from 50.6 the previous month, marking the fastest pace since May last year. The 50-mark separates expansion from contraction. The reading contrasted with China's official survey, which showed services activity edging down slightly to 50.0 in July from 50.1 in June. The S&P PMI is considered a better read of trends among smaller, export-oriented firms, particularly along the east coast, while the official PMI primarily tracks large and medium-sized enterprises, including state-owned companies. Meanwhile, the S&P China General Composite PMI dipped to 50.8 in July from 51.3 the previous month. China's economy, the world's second largest, slowed less than expected in the second quarter helped by policy measures and factories leveraging the U.S.-China trade truce to front-load shipments. However, concerns remain about the second half of the year as export momentum weakens, prices decline and consumer confidence remains subdued, partly hurt by a prolonged property market downturn. According to the S&P Global survey, the fastest growth in new business in a year supported the rise in activity heading into the second half of the year. The new export orders sub-index rose for the first time in three months, bolstered by stronger tourism activity and more stable trade conditions. Last week, U.S. and Chinese officials agreed to pursue an extension of their 90-day tariff truce after two days of what both sides called constructive talks in Stockholm. The survey showed that after reducing staffing levels in June, service providers increased employment at the quickest rate since July 2024, driven by higher workloads and improved confidence. This led to a slower accumulation of backlogged work. Rising costs for raw materials, fuel and salaries kept average input prices in expansion territory in July. As a result, service providers raised their selling prices for the first time in six months. With new business and activity on the rise, overall business confidence improved. From July, Caixin no longer sponsors the S&P Global China PMI.
