Mumbai MLA hostel caterer's licence suspended after 'stale' food claim by legislator
Maharashtra Food and Drugs Administration
(FDA) has suspended the licence of a caterer that operates the canteen at the MLA hostel in Mumbai, where a staffer was assaulted by a
Shiv Sena
legislator for allegedly serving stale food.
The FDA, in its suspension order on Wednesday evening, stated the contractor (Ajanta Caterers) had violated provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and the Food Safety and Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food Businesses) Regulations, 2011.
The violations were found during an inspection conducted at the Akashwani MLA hostel earlier on Wednesday, said the regulator.

The FDA's order directed Ajanta Caterers to cease food service operations at the hostel premises starting Thursday.
The action comes after ruling Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad slapped and punched an employee at the MLAs' hostel canteen for serving "stale food".
Live Events
The MLA from Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde-led party said he had repeatedly raised concerns about the quality of food served in the canteen but no corrective action was taken.
"I had complained several times about the food served in the canteen but the situation remained unchanged," Gaikwad claimed.
Viral video footage showing the Buldhana MLA slapping and punching an employee at the MLAs' hostel canteen for serving "stale food" has drawn widespread condemnation from government and opposition, with Maharashtra Chief Minister
Devendra Fadnavis
denouncing the act.
The CM said such behaviour sends a "wrong message" about legislators misusing their power.
The widely circulated video shows Gaikwad, wearing a vest and a towel, confronting the canteen contractor and forcing him to smell a packet of dal before slapping and punching him.
Deputy Chief Minister and Shiv Sena president Eknath Shinde said if something wrong is happening, there could be legal action, but beating up people is inappropriate.

LG asks govt to make Aadhaar registrations ‘foolproof'
Lt Governor VK Saxena has asked the Delhi government to make Aadhaar registrations in the national capital 'foolproof', saying illegal migrants obtaining the document has wider national security ramifications, officials said on Friday. It has come to the attention of the Lt Governor that in several instances, illegal immigrants have managed to secure an Aadhaar card on the basis of 'false documentation or misrepresentation', Ashish Kundra, principal secretary to LG, said in a letter to the Delhi chief secretary. This has a 'cascading' effect as some individuals secure other documents (passport and voter identity cards) which establish nationality and avail benefits under various government schemes and impact employment opportunities meant for locals, noted the letter. 'This also has wider ramifications for national security,' the letter from the LG office said. A fresh look at the responsibilities assigned to Registrars under the Aadhaar (Enrolment and Update) Regulations, 2016, in the Delhi government, is required with respect to field-level implementation, monitoring and verification procedures, the letter said. 'The Lt Governor has directed that clear instructions be issued to all Registrars to strictly comply with the provisions of the Aadhaar (Enrolment and Update) Regulations, 2016 and switch to an in-house model of Aadhaar enrolment within two months,' it said. Divisional commissioner should also supervise a monthly audit exercise to make sure there are no loopholes, it added further. Details of all the enrolment centres set up by the state government including municipal bodies, may be put up alongwith the current mode of functioning by July 15, the LG directed further. Aadhaar Enrolment is an 'extremely sensitive exercise' and it's vital to fix the responsibility of the person gathering data before issuing Aadhaar, so that accountability can be fixed in case of lapses, the letter noted.

Now, Sena minister Shirsat in video with ‘wads of cash'
MUMBAI: A day after he admitted to receiving a notice from the Income Tax department regarding a surge in his assets, social justice minister Sanjay Shirsat was seen in a video seated on a bed with what appears to be bundles of currency notes in a bag beside him. The video of Sanjay Shirsat was shared online by Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut on Friday. The video was shared online by Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut on Friday. Shirsat, Shiv Sena MLA from Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar and a close aide of deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde, has rubbished the claim, saying the bag contained only clothes and sundry items. The video, which quickly went viral online, has evoked a flurry of reactions from the opposition. In his social media post while sharing the video, Raut said, 'Prime minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah need to see this exciting video. What's going on in the country? This video of a minister from Maharashtra explains a lot.' Raut added that he 'felt sorry' for chief minister Devendra Fadnavis. 'The second name of helplessness is Fadnavis. How many incidents of embarrassment Fadnavis is going to tolerate silently?' he remarked. Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray took a sharp jab at Shirsat, with a quick-witted comment. He said the purported cash in the bag was part of '50 khoke', referring to his party's allegation that each of the Shiv Sena MLAs who had defected with Eknath Shinde had been given ₹50 crore to switch loyalties. Thackeray added, 'He (Shirsat) just received an IT notice. With this video, at least now CM Fadnavis will take action in the matter.' Sena (UBT) group leader in the legislative assembly Bhaskar Jadhav went a step further, alleging that the video of Shirsat could expose a conflict within the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance, of which the Sena is a constituent. 'We can see money in the bag. First an inquiry into a hotel deal involving his son, then an IT notice, and now this video with a bag of money. It seems someone in the ruling alliance does not want to see Shirsat as a cabinet minister and so this video was leaked,' alleged Jadhav. Shirsat defended himself, saying, 'It looks like I came back from travel and my travel bag was lying around with clothes and some other stuff. Even my pet dog is sitting nearby. It doesn't mean I am doing anything wrong.' How did a candid video of the minister end up being recorded in his home, in the first place? Shirsat said he could not tell when it was shot. Since he is a leader of the common man, a range of people have access to his home and some 'enthusiastic' party workers may have recorded the video, he claimed. This is the third time this week that Shirsat has been embroiled in controversy. On Monday, he was caught on the wrong foot over allegations that the auction of a hotel in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar had been manipulated to favour his son Siddhant. After the opposition levelled the allegation in the legislative assembly, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis announced an investigation into the matter. The demand was made by the Sena (UBT). The video with the purported wads of cash is ill-timed for Shirsat, who on Thursday said he had received a notice from the Income Tax department, which has sought a clarification on a significant increase in his assets from 2019 to 2024.

Sena (UBT) demands 20% reservation for 'Marathi Manoos' in Mumbai buildings
Leader of Opposition in the legislative council Ambadas Danve and Milind Narvekar gave a letter with this demand to minister Shambhuraj Desai, who belongs to the rival Shiv Sena Press Trust of India Mumbai The Shiv Sena (UBT) lawmakers on Friday demanded that 20 per cent houses in buildings in Mumbai be reserved for native Marathi speakers. Leader of Opposition in the legislative council Ambadas Danve and Milind Narvekar gave a letter with this demand to minister Shambhuraj Desai, who belongs to the rival Shiv Sena. "We demand 20 per cent of houses in buildings in Mumbai for Marathi Manoos," Nareveak said in a post on X. On Thursday, Narvekar had asked in the legislative council whether a social organisation had demanded that 50 per cent housing units in the city be reserved for the Marathi people, and if the government had taken any decision on it. In a written reply, deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who is also the Housing Minister, said his department had not received any such letter. Replying on behalf of Shinde, Mines Minister Shambhuraj Desai had said when the Maha Vikas Aghadi government led by Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray was in power during 2019-2022, it did not bring in any such law. "You did not do it, and this has come on record. Your love for Marathi Manoos is fake and hollow," Desai had said.
