LG asks govt to make Aadhaar registrations ‘foolproof'
It has come to the attention of the Lt Governor that in several instances, illegal immigrants have managed to secure an Aadhaar card on the basis of 'false documentation or misrepresentation', Ashish Kundra, principal secretary to LG, said in a letter to the Delhi chief secretary.
This has a 'cascading' effect as some individuals secure other documents (passport and voter identity cards) which establish nationality and avail benefits under various government schemes and impact employment opportunities meant for locals, noted the letter.
'This also has wider ramifications for national security,' the letter from the LG office said.
A fresh look at the responsibilities assigned to Registrars under the Aadhaar (Enrolment and Update) Regulations, 2016, in the Delhi government, is required with respect to field-level implementation, monitoring and verification procedures, the letter said.
'The Lt Governor has directed that clear instructions be issued to all Registrars to strictly comply with the provisions of the Aadhaar (Enrolment and Update) Regulations, 2016 and switch to an in-house model of Aadhaar enrolment within two months,' it said.
Divisional commissioner should also supervise a monthly audit exercise to make sure there are no loopholes, it added further.
Details of all the enrolment centres set up by the state government including municipal bodies, may be put up alongwith the current mode of functioning by July 15, the LG directed further.
Aadhaar Enrolment is an 'extremely sensitive exercise' and it's vital to fix the responsibility of the person gathering data before issuing Aadhaar, so that accountability can be fixed in case of lapses, the letter noted.

C'garh cops ‘kidnapped' 8 Nadia workers: Mahua
Kolkata: Eight construction workers from Nadia, engaged by a Chhattisgarh-based private construction agency to work in Bastar's Kondagaon, had been "kidnapped" by Chhattisgarh police on July 12 and put in Jagdalpur prison, Trinamool's Krishnanagar MP Mahua Moitra alleged on Monday. Moitra said the workers' phones were switched off and the families had lost contact with them. The MP said these extra-judicial detentions took place despite the eight having valid Aadhaar and EPIC cards. In a statement on X, Moitra said: "They have been sent to prison under 128 BNSS, earlier 109 CrPC, which allows cops to act if they suspect anyone is hiding to avoid committing a cognizable offence. But the legal provisions stipulated have been completely ignored, no hearings were given. The police detained them on July 12, and now they are in prison." Officers from Nadia's Thanarpara police station, under whose jurisdiction the eight live, have testified that they checked the EPIC and Aadhaar cards of all eight workers, and they were all Indian citizens. "NRC through back door...": AIMIM chief Owaisi slams EC over SIR in Bihar
Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], July 14 (ANI): All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) president Asaduddin Owaisi on Monday lashed out at the Election Commission over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in Bihar, accusing the poll panel of trying to go beyond its constitutional mandate. He said the poll panel does not have a right to determine citizenship and said he had termed SIR as 'NRC through back door'. 'It is unfortunate that a constitutional body is not making a statement, and things are being revealed through sources. Who are these sources? Who gave the ECI the power to determine whether someone is a citizen or not? Our party was the first to say that SIR is NRC through the back door,' Owaisi said. He said the party members will be asked to meet BLOs (block level officers). 'SIR was conducted in 2003. How many foreign nationals were revealed at that time?' he asked. 'They (ECI) do not have the right (to determine citizenship)... The Home Ministry, SP Border have the right... Why are they doing this if they don't have the right... This is why I said that this is back door NRC... There are elections in Bihar in November. Why do they want to make the people of Seemanchal powerless...?,' he added. Supreme Court on July 10 allowed ECI to continue Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls while advising them to consider allowing Aadhaar, ration cards, and electoral photo identity cards as admissible documents to prove voter identity. Unemployed SSC teachers launch protest march 'Nabanno Abhiyan' towards Bengal Secretariat
Howrah (West Bengal) [India], July 14 (ANI): Senior Secondary Commission (SSC) teachers who lost their jobs after the Calcutta High Court decisison in 2024, launched a protest march 'Nabanno Abhiyan' in Howrah towards the Bengal Secretariat under the banner of 'Jogya Shikshak Shikshika Adhikar Mancha'. They lost their jobs following a Supreme Court judgment which held that the whole appointment process was tainted. The teachers who lost their jobs staged several protest against the Mamata Banerjee's government demanding justice. Calcutta High Court in April, 2024 declared all appointments null and void in the selection of candidates in West Bengal government-sponsored and aided secondary and higher secondary schools through a 2016 recruitment process. The court further ordered that those who were recruited illegally will have to return their salary. All appointments by the SSC in the categories of teachers of classes 9, 10, 11 and 12 and group-C and D staffers through the State Level Selection Test-2016 (SLST) where irregularities were found have also been declared null and void. A bench of Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar found that the West Bengal SSC's selection process was based on large-scale manipulations and fraud. 'In our opinion, this is a case wherein the entire selection process has been vitiated and tainted beyond resolution. Manipulations and frauds on a large scale, coupled with the attempted cover-up, have dented the selection process beyond repair and partial redemption. The credibility and legitimacy of the selection are denuded,' the apex court bench stated in its judgement. The apex court found no reason to interfere with the High Court's direction that the services of 'tainted' candidates must be terminated and that they should be required to refund any salaries/payments received. 'Since their appointments were the result of fraud, this amounts to cheating. Therefore, we see no justification to alter this direction', the bench added. (ANI)
