New 7-seater Tayron slots below the Touareg and above the Tiguan
Available with three engine options and three trim levels
Range-topping 195TSI R-Line develops 195kW of power
Volkswagen finally has a car to compete with the segment-leading Hyundai Santa Fe. Meet the new Tayron 7-seater SUV, which is essentially a Tiguan with a stretched wheelbase designed to replace the previous generation Tiguan Allspace. However, compared to the Allspace, there is crucially a lot more space in the Tayron and a plethora of new technology aside from some pretty aggressive styling on the exterior as well.
Billed as the 'Mini Touareg', the Tayron will come with a 5-seater 110TSI Life entry-level variant with a 110kW/250Nm turbocharged 1.4-litre four-cylinder petrol engine along with a FWD configuration. Meanwhile, up the range are the 150TSI Life, Elegance and the 195TSI R-Line trims, which come with a punchier 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with 150kW for the Elegance trim and 195kW/400Nm for the flagship R-Line. Importantly, every model in the line-up comes with the Volkswagen staple 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, helping the R-Line iteration of the Tayron accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 6.1 seconds.
We want to note that the Tayron is longer than the Allspace by about 58 mm, with an overall length of 4792 mm, putting it right up there next to the Touareg (4,902 mm) in terms of length. With the 3rd row folded, luggage space has also increased by 150 litres to 850 litres. Meanwhile, compared to the Tiguan, the Tayron is longer by 250 mm and has a stretched wheelbase by 110 mm.

Looking at the different variants of the Tayron, we'll start with the 110TSI Life trim that has the smallest powertrain with 110kW of power and 250Nm of torque in a front-wheel drive configuration. However, standard equipment does include 18-inch 'Bologna' alloy wheels, keyless access with alarm, power tailgate, Area View 360-degree camera, Digital Cockpit Pro (widescreen driver display), 12.9-inch touchscreen with satellite navigation, wireless App-Connect, wireless smartphone charging and DAB+ digital radio.
Safety-wise, you get Travel Assist (with adaptive cruise control and Lane Assist for semi-autonomous and stop-and-go driving), Front Assist with pedestrian and cyclist monitoring and Side Assist with rear traffic alert are also standard along with side exit warning, front cross-traffic assist, oncoming vehicle braking when turning with swerve support, Park Assist Plus (with semi-autonomous steering and throttle/braking to park), 9 airbags (including centre) and Dynamic Road Sign Assist.
Step up to the 150TSI Life and you gain a more powerful 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine is also available with the Life trim, with 885 litres of luggage capacity thanks to a 5-seater layout. Towing performance is rated at 2,500kg braked.

If you want a 7-seater layout, you'll want to check out the 150TSI Elegance, which adds in features like 19-inch 'Catania' alloy wheels, leather-appointed seat upholstery, front 'ergoActive' seats with power adjustment, heating, ventilation, memory, and massage, heated outer second row seats, heated steering wheel, LED Plus headlights with illuminated grille strip, LED tail-lights with illuminated centre strip, chrome roof rails and trim, and rear privacy glass.
Options for the Elegance trim include the Sound & Vision package, where you get a head-up display, Harman Kardon premium audio, 15-inch Discover Pro Max navigation, HD Matrix LED headlights, Dynamic Light Assist and dynamic indicators at the rear.

Last but not least, the sportier R-Line trim has the most power and visually too gets a more purposeful look courtesy 20-inch 'Leeds' alloy wheels, R-Line interior and exterior styling, progressive steering, 15.0-inch Discover Pro Max navigation, head-up display, Harman Kardon premium audio, HD Matrix LED headlights, Dynamic Light Assist, and dynamic indicators at the rear.
Options for the R-Line include a Black Style package, which adds 20-inch 'York' alloy wheels, gloss black exterior mirrors, roof rails, roof design strip and R-Line front bumper, and interior design elements with a black/dark anodised finish. Both the 150TSI Elegance and 195TSI R-Line can also be specced with a panoramic sunroof.
To be launched in September, the Tayron would be available in six colours: Pure White, Oyster Silver Metallic, Dolphin Grey Metallic, Night Shade Blue Metallic, Grenadilla Black Metallic, and Ultra Violet Premium Metallic. Pricing for the Tayron will be revealed closer to launch, but expect it to sit above the Tiguan, which starts from $44,990 plus on-road costs, and below the Touareg, which starts from $86,790 plus on-roads for the base 170TDI model.

What is a Super Hybrid? New Chinese Car Brand Catchphrase Explained

By Ben McKimm - News Published: 21 Jul 2025 Share Copy Link Readtime: 5 min Every product is carefully selected by our editors and experts. If you buy from a link, we may earn a commission. Learn more. For more information on how we test products, click here. Reported EV sales dropped 52% in Australia through June 2025 Chinese brands shift focus to 'Super Hybrid' plug-in hybrid technology 'Super Hybrid' simplifies confusing PHEV jargon Models like Geely, MG, Chery, and BYD lead the Super Hybrid push Toyota responds with upcoming RAV4 PHEV amid rising competition Electric vehicle sales have decreased by more than 52% through June 2025 in Australia, and that's bad news if you're a Chinese EV-only car brand that's trying to break into a new market. Brands like Zeekr, DEEPAL, Smart, Polestar, and Xpeng have their work cut out for them if they're going to stay as EV-only brands. However, the majority of Chinese car brands are now hedging their bets on hybrid technology, more specifically, 'Super Hybrid' technology. While their EVs are top-notch, their hybrids are even better, and that's a concern for market leaders like Toyota and its top-selling RAV4. It's also a worry for existing brands that have struggled to adapt to hybrids quickly, including Subaru, which only just launched the long-awaited Forester Hybrid. To dispel the complicated jargon associated with the different types of hybrid technology available, Chinese car brands have joined forces to create the term 'Super Hybrid,' which is another term for 'Plug-in Hybrid' or 'PHEV.' These vehicles have an engine, but can be driven for more than 100km with electric power only. It's genius, here's why. Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV | Image: Supplied / Mitsubishi I've had nothing but trouble trying to explain the differences between PHEV, BEV, MHEV, and all of the other complicated jargon associated with hybrid technology in recent years. I understand it as someone who's driven nearly everything, but I've had nothing but trouble trying to explain the differences to friends and family. I could only imagine what dealers and those on the showroom floor are going through, having to try to explain the differences between the technology to potential buyers. Consumer understanding hasn't been helped by brands like Mitsubishi that have stuck 'EV' badges on the side of their vehicles that require petrol, but they're not the only culprits. Mercedes-Benz, Toyota, and others have been quick to label cars 'Hybrid' that use a simple 48-volt system, which never provides drive to the wheels. The Chinese brands have realised the issues and jumped in with an all-encompassing term that makes your life as a new car buyer easier by explaining these complicated products under one term, 'Super Hybrid.' Geely Starray EM-i | Image: Supplied / Geely To get granular, the term 'Super Hybrid' describes a 'Plug-in Hybrid' or 'PHEV' vehicle, which has a conventional petrol engine and gearbox, but also a large battery (that can be charged like an EV) and an electric motor that powers the wheels. These vehicles can be driven on electric power only for more than 100km in most cases and charged with a cable or the vehicle's engine. Most importantly, they can also be driven without even being plugged in by using the petrol engine as a traditional hybrid would. Geely is the latest Chinese car brand to ditch the EV-only showroom by launching the oddly-named Starray EM-i, which the brand is calling a 'Super Hybrid.' It features a 1.5-litre engine that produces 73kW of power alongside a 160kW electric motor powered by an 18.4kWh battery that can send a combined 193kW of power to the front wheels and drive for up to 80km on EV-only power. It will soon be joined in the market by other 'Super Hybrid' vehicles, including the Omoda 9 SHS (from $61,990 plus on-roads) and existing models in the market like the MG HS Super Hybrid (from $50,990 drive-away), top-selling BYD Sealion 6 (from AUD$42,990 plus on-roads), and the large Chery Tiggo 8 Super Hybrid SUV (from $45,990 drive-away). Geely Starray EM-i | Image: Supplied / Geely If 'Super Hybrid' technology sounds like the best of EVs without the range anxiety, then you'd mostly be right. I've spent time behind the wheel of everything from the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV to a $250,000 Range Rover Sport PHEV and Defender that uses the same basic concept. During my test of these vehicles, I rarely used the petrol engine to drive the vehicle. I charged up the small battery overnight using a powerpoint and drove to work and back without ever using the petrol engine. However, there is one catch, as I experienced in the Alfa Romeo Tonale PHEV. If you become too lazy to charge the battery during the ownership period, PHEV or 'Super Hybrid' vehicles are terrible to drive. The added weight (often hundreds of kilograms) and underpowered petrol engine mean they're severely down on power, and without the added oomph of an electric motor driving the wheels, you spend the whole time wishing that you were driving a conventional hybrid. 2026 Toyota RAV4 | Image: Supplied / Toyota Therein lies Toyota's argument. Car buyers are lazy; they won't charge their PHEVs, and the Super Hybrid technology is merely a stepping-stone to a battery EV or a step backwards on the super-efficient hybrid technology that Toyota already offers. At least, it was their argument until they launched their new RAV4 with a PHEV variant. Toyota has sold 24,034 Hybrid RAV4s through June 2025. That figure is down 5.4% on where the top-selling car was this time last year, but it's one to watch as more 'Super Hybrid' models from Chinese brands hit our market in the coming months and Toyota's own plug-in hybrid RAV4 hits the market sometime next year. PHEV sales in Australia are up 10.5% so far this year, but the small number of cars sold through June 2025 (472 sales) does make you wonder just how many people are asking for this technology.

Bentley's ‘EXP 15' Concept is a Sneak Peek at its First EV, Due in 2026

Futuristic concept showcases what future EVs from Bentley could look like Incorporates an illuminated grille which mimics the current design Upcoming EV will have an AWD electric powertrain Bentley is best known for its slightly imperious but lavishly trimmed luxury cars. Slightly more sporting than Rolls-Royce, though, Bentley manages to make luxury cars that also deliver the power to swallow vast distances with ease. However, with an electric future looming large, Bentley has had to do change with the times—but it's done so by looking into its glorious back catalogue. You see, Bentley used to make a car called the 'Speed Six Gurney Nutting Sportsman' coupe in the 1930s which had an unusual body style: a high-riding coupe with a fastback sloping roofline. Now, the automaker's new 'EXP 15' concept follows in those footsteps but with an even more outrageous design, and shows what the next EV from Bentley could look like. Bentley EXP 15 Concept EV | Image: Bentley This concept hints at the brand's electric future and some design cues will eventually be added to the production EV due next year while the interior is made in virtual reality. Standing tall and measuring more than five-metres, the EXP 15 concept divides opinion in terms of its styling but, to us, the design screams Bentley. The grille is not the usual EV-esque body-coloured affair, and is instead an illuminated art piece. The new Bentley badge also now sits inside the grille while new vertical headlamps give it a menacing glare. Bentley EXP 15 Concept EV | Image: Bentley Bentley EXP 15 Concept EV | Image: Bentley Move to the side and that's where things get interesting: the EXP 15 gets a unique 3-door design much like the Hyundai Veloster plus there are two active rear spoilers along with a large diffuser. The ride height is more than a typical sedan but still shorter than an SUV, delivering an interesting crossover of sorts. Inside, there is a 3-seat configuration as the space next to the driver has been reserved for taking pets or luggage—also a nod to the bespoke vintage cars. The rear seats and the passenger side seat can swivel 45 degrees for easier ingress/egress while the cabin is bathed in traditional luxury elements, and Bentley has designed the cabin to include both physical and digital design details, along with a mix of traditional, artisanal, and sustainable materials. You can even use the car's boot space as a picnic table. Bentley EXP 15 Concept EV | Image: Bentley Bentley EXP 15 Concept EV | Image: Bentley 'The beauty of a concept car is not just to position our new design language, but to test where the market's going. It's clear that SUVs are a growing segment and we understand the GT market – through four generations of the Continental GT – but the trickiest segment is the sedan because it's changing,' said Robin Page, Bentley's director of design. 'Some customers want a classic 'three-box' sedan shape, others a 'one-box' design, and others again something more elevated. (The EXP 15 is) a chance for us to talk to people and get a feeling.' Bentley EXP 15 Concept EV | Image: Bentley Like any typical Bentley there is a lot of knurled switchgear too and the jewellery is in abundance with a superb attention to detail. The digital interface throughout the dashboard can be turned off to embrace a digital detoxication while being covered by some fine wood veneer for the passengers to ogle at. It seems Bentley is attempting to keep some balance between technology and giving its customers the feel of physical buttons, along with its traditional luxury vibe. The EXP 15 is purely a concept, not a work of science fiction, since we can expect many of these details to actually trickle down to its first EV. Whenever that arrives, we can expect a powerful AWD configuration with many motors developing more power than any of its current V8 cars along with a plethora of technology. Man of Many's Staff Favourites—19 July, 2025

The week is over, July is halfway done, and wouldn't you know it—it's time for another round of our Staff Favourites! Each week, we try to show off some things that have brought us some joy in the hopes it'll help you find your own, and this week we're showcasing some delicious Tasmanian whiskey, a pint-sized collectable car, an ape wearing a tie, and some custom Adidas. Hot Wheels 1990 Acura NSX Brick Set | Image: Mattel Hot Wheels 1990 Acura NSX Brick Set John Guanzon – Head of Creative & Production When we posted about the news of Mattel dropping collector-focused brick sets on Man of Many's Instagram, the response was huge, so I took it as my sign to grab a set for myself. I told myself it was for the kids over the school holidays, but let's be real: I'll be the one building it while they watch (and honestly, I'm not mad about it). The build quality is surprisingly impressive. This one features 876 pieces and pays tribute to the iconic '90s ride with incredible attention to detail, from its scissor doors to the classic wedge profile. It's part of Mattel's new Brick Shop range, which also includes the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL and 1963 Corvette Grand Sport. All three are loaded with authentic touches and feel way more premium than you'd expect from a brick set. It's definitely got that collector energy, and now I'm tempted to grab the others and complete the set (or quietly drop hints between now and Father's Day wink). Favourite Article this Week: Our First Look at Link and Zelda in 2027's 'Legend of Zelda' Movie Donkey Kong Bonanza | Image: Nintendo Donkey Kong Goes Bananza Dean Blake – Entertainment & Tech Writer Donkey Kong has finally been let out of his cage, and he's literally tearing the scenery apart. In DK's big return to a starring role, he's diving deep into the bowels of the planet in Bananza, the first major single-player system-seller for Nintendo's new Switch 2 console. I got a chance to play a few hours of the game recently, and it was fantastic. DK feels great in the hands (which is no surprise if you've played this studio's prior game, Super Mario Odyssey), and has a number of new abilities in store: he can break the world apart around him, for one, but also climb most surfaces and, when the mood strikes just right, turn into an ostrich. No, I'm not kidding. He can also turn into a zebra and an even bigger ape with bananas in his hair, which is strange but you know, who cares? Doing so gives the big man access to some new abilities, like gliding, sprinting, and bashing things even harder. Oh, and he does it all with a human child on his shoulder. Confused yet? Well, that's just the beginning of where things get whacky with this one, but I don't think I want to spoil much else. Really, if you've already picked up a Switch 2 for Mario Kart you'd be doing yourself a disservice not to check out Bananza—and if you've been on the fence, this is a pretty damn good reason to make the jump to Nintendo's new system. Image: Scott Purcell / Man of Many Kicking It with the Three Stripes: Our Night with the adidas Superstar Scott Purcell – Co-Founder This week, Harry and I had the opportunity to head out to the adidas flagship store on Pitt St in Sydney to celebrate the return of a true icon: the adidas Superstar. The new 'Superstar: The Original' campaign is bringing back the legendary sneaker in two classic colourways, alongside the equally iconic Firebird Tracksuit. The global campaign features a star-studded cast including the likes of Missy Elliott, Jennie from BLACKPINK, and is narrated by the one and only Samuel L. Jackson. The event was a super fun getting to customise our own sneakers, and they even offered to embroider the back of our new jackets ahead of the night. In a moment of questionable genius, I opted for 'Man of Many' on mine, which made for some interesting conversations. Others were more clever, with one person getting 'It wasn't me' stitched on the back. While I'm not sure my attempt with a metallic scourer was a complete success as you can see in the photo, I can confirm these shoes are ridiculously comfortable. I've been wearing them all week since and this was my first proper foray into the world of adidas Superstars footwear. I think it's safe to say I'm a convert. Rosevears Batch 1 delivers a bold, grain-forward profile that proudly wears its local ingredients on its sleeve. The nose is rich with sweet corn and toasted cereal, backed by a punch of rye spice and oak. On the palate, it leans into classic bourbon notes – vanilla, caramel, and a touch of char. While it doesn't quite rival the depth of some seasoned Kentucky counterparts, Rosevears impresses with its authenticity and craftsmanship. As a debut, it sets a promising foundation for what's to come from this Tasmanian distillery.
