Macron dismisses viral moment with wife as 'joking around' after disinformation claims backfire

His office has continued to downplay the incident following the initial attempt to suggest a pro-Russia disinformation campaign.
"It was a moment where the president and his wife were decompressing one last time before the start of the trip by horsing around. It's a moment of complicity. It was all that was needed to give ammunition to the conspiracy theorists," his office said.
Macron has also told reporters that the couple were just joking around.
"We are squabbling and, rather, joking with my wife," he said, adding that the incident was being overblown into "a sort of geo-planetary catastrophe."
Video of the incident showed a uniformed man opening the plane door as Macron was seen wearing a suit and standing in the doorway. Brigitte Macron's arms – in red sleeves – could be seen reaching out and pushing Macron away, with one hand covering his mouth and part of his nose while the other was on his jaw. The French president turned his head away but suddenly noticed news cameras capturing the moment. He quickly smiled and waved before exiting the door frame.
Macron and his wife later disembarked the stairs of the aircraft together. The French president offered his arm, though the first lady – seen wearing a red blazer – did not take hold of it.
The video quickly went viral and was mainly promoted by accounts that have been accused of being habitually hostile to the French leader.
"For three weeks … there are people who have watched videos and think I shared a bag of cocaine, that I had a fight with the Turkish president, and that now I'm having a domestic dispute with my wife," said Macron. "None of these are true. Everyone needs to calm down."

A powerful 8.8-magnitude earthquake off Russia's eastern coast on Wednesday triggered tsunami warnings and advisories across the Pacific, affecting regions from Hawaii and California to Japan and Russia. The National Tsunami Warning Center upgraded the tsunami advisory to a tsunami warning for Northern California's coast from Cape Mendocino to the Oregon border, including Crescent City, where waves of 2 to 5ft could arrive around 11.50 pm PT on Tuesday. The rest of the California coast remained under a lower-level advisory, with smaller waves expected but still dangerous conditions. Crescent City was especially at risk, having suffered deadly tsunami damage in 1964. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said the earthquake hit just before 1.30 pm Hawaii Standard Time around 78 miles southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky in Russia. Rising waters and strong currents could affect southern California, although widespread flooding was unlikely, the National Weather Service said. It warned that tsunamis often came in a series of waves over several hours, with the first not necessarily being the largest. Canadian officials issued a tsunami watch for parts of coastal British Columbia. Several people were injured in Russia's far eastern Kamchatka peninsula and much of Japan's eastern coastline was placed under evacuation orders. 'Today's earthquake was serious and the strongest in decades of tremors,' Kamchatka governor Vladimir Solodov said. Tsunami waves reaching 3-4m were reported in parts of Kamchatka, Sergei Lebedev, the region's emergency minister, said. Japan issued a tsunami advisory following the earthquake. UK to Recognize Palestine If Israel Doesn't End Gaza War
00:00 Well, last week we were talking about President Macron and France and making a similar announcement, but perhaps a little bit more explicit, saying that they will actually move to recognize a Palestinian statehood come September at the U.N. General Assembly. A lot of pressure has been building on the U.K. prime minister to do the same. He sort of did, but with a few caveats. What maybe. Walk us through what what he announced yesterday. Yeah, he didn't go quite as far as Emmanuel Macron did last week when he made that announcement of plans to recognize a Palestinian state at the UN General Assembly, which is usually the third week in September. But Keir Starmer making it clear that he he is acknowledging the political pressure he's under from his own party to do more, to put pressure on Israel to to stop the conflict in Gaza. Starmer saying he will go ahead and recognise a Palestinian state if Israel doesn't wind down operations there, get itself set on a pathway toward peace that ends with a two state solution. So it's it looks like he's basically walking up to the line Macron put out there. This would if the two countries go forward and do this in September, they would be the first two of the G7 nations to officially recognize a Palestinian state. And it would it does add some pressure to Benjamin Netanyahu and his government to to get more aid flowing into into Gaza and to try to wrap up that conflict there as soon as they can. Yeah, well, you know, you bring up the flow of humanitarian aid and the passage of food into the Gaza enclave, but there are many within the Israeli coalition who are not happy to see Israel ease some of those curbs over the course of the weekend that members on the far right pushing back against the decision. So how likely is it that these big announcements coming from the likes of President Macron, from UK prime minister, a lot of push from international aid agencies as well? How likely is that to actually impact Netanyahu and his next moves? Well, we have seen periods since this conflict started with Hamas following Hamas's attacks on Israel in October 2023. We have seen periods where Israel has come under a lot of pressure internationally to either change its tactics, to pause the fighting, to do make other changes in its strategy. And it by and large, has has ignored much of that and and just kind of proceeded with its plan. The Netanyahu government continues to say their goal is to eliminate the political and military power of Hamas. It has not done that so far. And so it continues its operation. So I don't know that this is this is going to be enough to really persuade Netanyahu's government to do things differently, although they are, as you mentioned, working to get more aid in. We'll have to see whether that has the impact that the outside groups and foreign governments are looking for.

Attack on military base in Burkina Faso kills about 50 soldiers, residents say
LAGOS, Nigeria — An attack by an armed group on a military base in northern Burkina Faso has left about 50 soldiers dead, according to accounts by a community leader and a resident Tuesday. The Jama'at Nasr al-Islam wal-Muslimin group, or JNIM, was suspected of carrying out the attack Monday on the base in Dargo in Boulsa province in the northern region of the landlocked West African nation. The two sources, who spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they feared repercussions from the military, said about 100 militants participated in the attack, and that the gunmen burned and looted the base after the killings. The military government has yet to publicly acknowledge the attack. JNIM, one of several armed groups conducting attacks across West Africa, has been blamed for hundreds of civilian and military deaths. Burkina Faso is witnessing a surge in attacks by armed groups who are in control of most of the country, especially outside the capital. The deteriorating security situation has led to political shifts in the country and served as the pretext for back-to-back coups. The military leader, Ibrahim Traore, has been unable to rein in the Islamist groups despite his redrawing of political and military allies.
