Wrexham MP Andrew Ranger welcomes UK Government's trade deal with the EU

Leader Live27-05-2025
MP for Wrexham
I welcome the UK Government's trade deal with the EU as announced last week.
The EU is our biggest trading partner, and this deal helps to right the many wrongs of the previous government.
When Labour was elected, we said that we would reduce barriers to trade and economic growth, and we meant it.
The UK Government is respecting the decision made by the British people in 2016 and whilst there is no return to the EU, this deal make things easier for businesses as well as people in day-to-day life.
Before I was elected as MP for Wrexham, and since, different businesses both large and small, locally and regionally, have told me time and time again how the Conservative Government's Brexit deal had made their daily experience as a business more challenging: more expensive, more difficult, more barriers, higher costs.
This had led to some being forced to close due to the higher costs and increased bureaucracy.
We have all seen the impact on our own pockets with food prices rising and hospitality businesses struggling as well as those who previously exported to the EU.
The deal includes:
· Making it easier for food and drink to be imported and exported by reducing the red tape. This agreement will have no time limit, giving vital certainty to businesses.
· Some routine checks on animal and plant products will be removed completely.
· Closer co-operation on emissions through linking our respective Emissions Trading System.
· British steel exports are protected from new EU rules and restrictive tariffs, through a bespoke arrangement for the UK.
· British holidaymakers will be able to use more eGates in Europe.
· Introduction of 'pet passports' for UK cats and dogs.
· The EU-UK security and defence partnership means that British firms will be treated as European, so can benefit from defence procurement.
I welcome the agreement to explore access to Erasmus + as well as a Youth Mobility scheme; it is important that young people have access to opportunities that previous generations enjoyed and were denied to them for too long.
Co-operation on defence is also part of the deal.
The EU and the UK share the same challenging security environment, and both have vital interests in the peace, security and stability of Europe and beyond.

Palestine Action to make Court of Appeal bid at evening hearing over terror ban

Huda Ammori, the co-founder of Palestine Action, asked the High Court to temporarily block the Government from banning the group as a terrorist organisation before a potential legal challenge against the decision to proscribe it under the Terrorism Act 2000. The move was to come into force at midnight after High Court judge Mr Justice Chamberlain refused Ms Ammori's bid for a temporary block. However, the PA news agency understands that lawyers on behalf of the group will ask appeal judges for the go-ahead to challenge the decision in a hearing due to begin at about 7pm on Friday. In his decision refusing the temporary block, Mr Justice Chamberlain said: 'I have concluded that the harm which would ensue if interim relief is refused but the claim later succeeds is insufficient to outweigh the strong public interest in maintaining the order in force.' Shortly after the decision was handed down, Ms Ammori said that she would be 'seeking an urgent appeal to try to prevent a dystopian nightmare of the Government's making'. She added: 'The Home Secretary is rushing through the implementation of the proscription at midnight tonight despite the fact that our legal challenge is ongoing and that she has been completely unclear about how it will be enforced, leaving the public in the dark about their rights to free speech and expression after midnight tonight when this proscription comes into effect. 'Hundreds of thousands of people across the country have expressed support for Palestine Action by joining our mailing list, following and sharing our social media content and signing petitions, and many, including iconic figures like Sally Rooney, say they will continue to declare 'we are all Palestine Action' and speak out against this preposterous proscription, demonstrating how utterly unworkable it will be.'

Preferred candidate for chairman of Climate Change Committee announced

The chairman plays a key role in the committee's work of advising ministers on climate targets and reporting to Parliament on progress made in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The UK Government, Scottish Government, Welsh Government and Northern Ireland Executive all agreed on Mr Topping as the preferred candidate for the CCC role, Mr Miliband said on Friday. Before any formal appointment, Mr Topping will be questioned by MPs on the energy and environmental audit select committees on July 16. Mr Topping is currently a member of the Climate Change Committee and previously held the position of the UK's high-level climate action champion. Following an 18-year private sector career in emerging markets and manufacturing, he worked as executive director of the Carbon Disclosure Project and chief executive of the We Mean Business Coalition. If approved, Mr Topping will replace interim chairman Piers Forster, a leading climate scientist who succeeded former environment secretary Lord Deben in the role in 2023. Mr Miliband said: 'I am delighted to announce the preferred candidate for chair of the Climate Change Committee – Nigel Topping will bring his extensive experience to this role, having already served on the Climate Change Committee for more than two years and as a UN Climate Change High Level Champion for Cop26. 'The CCC plays a vital role advising the UK and devolved governments on our climate targets and this announcement comes at a crucial time, as we deliver our mission to make Britain a clean energy superpower with good jobs, energy security and growth for the British people. 'Net zero is the economic opportunity of the 21st century and Nigel's strong business background will help us drive growth on the transition to net zero, unlocking opportunities for Britain. 'I look forward to progressing the appointment in the coming weeks along with ministers in the devolved governments.'
