Malaysia explores silver economy potential for ageing population
She said the Economy Ministry, in collaboration with relevant ministries and agencies, may consider setting up a national council on ageing population to spearhead the development of the silver economy, as outlined in the National Ageing Blueprint (NAB) 2025–2045.
'The NAB was presented at the National Economic Action Council meeting on Feb 12, 2025.
'The meeting agreed that 11 high-impact interventions involving various ministries and agencies should be implemented immediately to lay a strong foundation in facing population ageing,' she told the Dewan Rakyat during the oral question-and-answer session today.
She was responding to a question from Tan Kok Wai (PH-Cheras), who asked about strategic policies and interventions to position the ageing population as a catalyst for economic growth.
Hanifah also gave her assurance that the effort to strengthen the nation's readiness for demographic ageing will be included in the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), which is scheduled to be tabled this week.
'I do not have the details at this moment, but inshaaAllah, the 13MP presentation will offer more comprehensive information,' she added. - Bernama

Malaysia approves RM11.62 bln in furniture projects as of March 2025
KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 1,533 furniture projects worth RM11.62 billion have been approved as of March this year, according to Deputy Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Liew Chin Tong. He revealed that 62% of these investments were domestic, while 38% came from foreign sources. The government continues to support the industry through the Market Development Grant (MDG), administered by MATRADE. Eligible companies receive RM25,000 for overseas trade promotions and RM5,000 for local events. Liew noted that 314 furniture firms have benefited from the MDG, with 4,148 applications approved—the highest among all sectors. 'From January 2021 to July 2025, MDG-assisted furniture companies generated RM1.46 billion in export sales,' he said during a Dewan Rakyat session. The grants disbursed to the sector total RM12.25 million. Addressing concerns about foreign competition, Liew stated that while Malaysia imposes no restrictions on furniture sector investments, MIDA will no longer actively encourage foreign participation, particularly in labour-intensive projects. 'Malaysia's furniture industry is already globally competitive, and we aim to prioritise local growth,' he added. - Bernama

Teresa Kok concerned over new KL planning rules gazetted without public consultation
KUALA LUMPUR: A member of parliament has raised concerns over the gazettement of new planning regulations for the city, claiming it was done without public consultation and gave excessive power to the mayor. Teresa Kok (PH-Seputeh) said the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur Planning Rules 2025 were gazetted on June 13 and came into force three days later. She said it took almost one and a half months for civil society to realise the change had come into effect. "I would like to ask the government why this new procedure was gazetted without any consultation with the public or relevant stakeholders, especially in terms of public participation? "According to the 2025 planning procedures, the mayor may consult relevant parties only if he or she deem it necessary, meaning there is no guarantee that the public will be given the opportunity to voice their views or objections before any development is approved." Kok raised the issue during the debate on the 13th Malaysia Plan in the Dewan Rakyat. She said the rules, which replace the decades-old planning framework, should reflect how society has become more aware and engaged. She said this move has sparked public concern as it reduces transparency in decision-making and limits opportunities for communities to scrutinise or oppose development plans. "It also grants excessive authority to the mayor, allowing them to approve developments regardless of public sentiment. "I urge the government to review this new planning procedure and provide an explanation to the public on how this policy was formulated and approved," she said.
