San Beda's Amir Aningalan among first football awardees of Collegiate Press Corps
San Beda University's Amir Aningalan is among the Collegiate Press Corps' first football awardees in its upcoming Awards Night on June 30.
Aningalan, the Most Valuable Player of NCAA Seasons 99 and 100, is set to be recognized as the CPC NCAA Football Player of the Year.
This is the first time that the group of writers covering the UAAP and NCAA decided to recognize top student-athletes in football.
Aside from being back-to-back MVP, Aningalan delivered the much-needed goals of the Red Booters in both finals stints where they went against De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde.
San Beda, meanwhile, has been a dominant force in NCAA football and has won 26 titles overall.
Over in the UAAP, Far Eastern University's Mon Diansuy and Carmela Altiche were named as the CPC Men's and Women's Football Players of the Year.
Diansuy, a goalkeeper, was instrumental in FEU's championship run against Ateneo de Manila University where they won over penalties, 1-1 (5-4).
Altiche, on the other hand, played a key role in FEU'S 3-2 win over La Salle in the Finals as she not only converted a penalty in the 45+7th minute, but also made a crucial cross to Regine Rebosura for the goal in the 67th minute.
Top student-athletes from basketball and volleyball will also be recognized in the Awards Night which will be held at the Discovery Suites Manila.

KarlTzy, Oheb shine as Team Liquid dominates Ultra Legends in MSC opener
Team Liquid Philippines was solid in its campaign opener at the 2025 Mid-Season Cup with the tandem of Karl Gabriel "KarlTzy" Nepomuceno and Kiel "Oheb" Soriano leading the way against Ultra Legends of Egypt, 2-0, on Wednesday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Team Liquid, which ruled the MPL Philippines Season 15, imposed their will on the reigning MPL MENA (Middle East and North Africa) champions in their best-of-three affair to move a win away from securing a playoff spot. Ultra Legends staged a massive resistance during the first lord march late in Game 1, but a crucial pick-off by gold laner Oheb (Granger) on midlaner Omar "Quanok" Ali (Zetian) instigated a four-man wipeout for Team Liquid. Team Liquid took advantage of four enemy heroes down to draw first blood in the 13-minute duel. Jungler KarlTzy was named MVP after unleashing seven kills and eight assists against just one death on his comfort hero Lancelot. Ultra Legends made necessary adjustments in Game 2 after opting to ban Lancelot during the draft phase, but it didn't affect Team Liquid at all as Oheb took care of business in the clincher. Oheb (Harith) unloaded a maniac during the final clash in Game 2, taking down Quanok (Pharsa), Dark Lord (Phoveus), Rise Crim (Tigreal), and his counterpart Pharaoh (Granger) that led to a total wipeout and the clean victory for Team Liquid. MVP Napheesa Collier leads squad past Team Clark at All-Star Game

The Minnesota Lynx star was 13-of-16 shooting and collected nine rebounds while claiming MVP honors. "I have amazing teammates," Collier said. "You guys see who's here. Couldn't do without them so all the credit to them." Allisha Gray of the Atlanta Dream added 18 points and Kelsey Plum of the Los Angeles Sparks and Nneka Ogwumike of the Seattle Storm added 16 for Team Collier, which led by as many as 27 points. Skylar Diggins of the Storm registered an All-Star record 15 assists to go with 11 points and 11 rebounds for Team Collier. "We came out here to have fun. We put ourselves out there and I wanted to leave here with something," Diggins said of the first triple-double in WNBA All-Star Game history. "We have such a talented group, I knew I was going to have to find my niche elsewhere, so I started racking up the assists." Kelsey Mitchell of the Indiana Fever scored 20 points for Team Clark. Kiki Iriafen of Washington had 17 points and her Mystics teammate Brittney Sykes added 16. Gabby Williams of the Storm also had 16 points and Kayla Thornton of the Golden State Valkyries had 15 points and 11 rebounds. Caitlin Clark of the Indiana Fever sat out the game due to a right groin injury. The game featured a 4-point shot from circles located 28 or more feet from the hoop. Team Collier made 12 of 28 4-point shots, while Team Clark was just 8 of 37. Collier made 4 of 5 4-point attempts. The growing tension between the league and players hung heavy during the contest. The players wore "Pay Us What You Owe Us" T-shirts during warm-ups and while sitting on the benches. A meeting between the two sides on Thursday led to many players being critical of the lack of progress toward a new Collective Bargaining Agreement. "When we say the 'W' we're at the forefront of a lot of different things," A'ja Wilson, a three-time league MVP suited up for Team Clark, said of the shirts worn by players. "There are things we deserve and we're demanding. Right now, during this transformative time that we're in, we need to start capitalizing on that. We need to get what we're well overdue for and it shows how powerful our league is and how powerful our voices are on our platform." Mitchell said the statement on the T-shirt spoke for itself. "It was important for our statement to remain clear," Mitchell said. "We just want the respect we deserve at the end of the day." Team Clark trailed by 22 points at the break, but Gray hit a 4-pointer and a trey within a 37-second span to give Team Collier a 97-70 advantage with 6:25 left in the third quarter. Team Clark scored the next eight points before Collier buried a 4-pointer and Gray made a 3-pointer to give Team Collier a 104-78 lead with 4:50 left. Team Collier led 119-95 entering the unsuspenseful final stanza. But with 5:30 remaining, Collier buried a 4-pointer off a pass from Diggins, giving Collier the points record and Diggins the assists mark. Arike Ogunbowale of the Dallas Wings set the points record of 34 last year. Team Collier came out fast with Paige Bueckers of the Dallas Wings making a 4-pointer for the game's first points. A 4-pointer by Kayla McBride of the Minnesota Lynx made it 45-32 later in the period before Team Collier led 49-36 entering the second quarter. The margin was nine in the second quarter before Collier scored 10 straight points. She knocked down back-to-back 4-pointers and added a layup to give her squad a 63-44 lead with 5:57 left in the half. Team Collier led 82-60 at the break. Mapua Cardinals among PH reps in World University Games
The Mapua University men's basketball team is among the delegates of the Philippines to the World University Games in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany. The Cardinals will start their campaign on July 19 against Brazil, Czech Republic on the 20th, and Poland on the 21st. The Intramuros-based crew is the reigning NCAA champion in men's basketball. This is the first time since 2021 that the University Summer Games is held after it was cancelled in 2023 due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. —JKC, GMA Integrated News
