Clint Escamis, Bella Belen recognized in Collegiate Press Corps Awards Night

(Photo: Collegiate Press Corps) Mapua University's Clint Escamis, National University's Bella Belen, and other top student-athletes from the NCAA and UAAP were under one roof last Monday as the Collegiate Press Corps (CPC) held its Awards Night at Discovery Suites. Escamis received the Collegiate Press Corps Basketball Player of the Year Award presented by GMA Network, while Belen was the UAAP Women's Volleyball Player of the Year. 'I'm honored for this award and I know I couldn't have done this without my teammates, kaya it just fuels me to help Mapua win back-to-back championships,' said Escamis, who is returning for his final season with the Cardinals in the upcoming NCAA Season 101. Escamis also led the CPC Men's Basketball Mythical Team along with De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde's Allen Liwag from the NCAA, and JD Cagulangan (UP) and Kevin Quiambao and Mike Phillips (DLSU). Belen, on the other hand, was among the CPC's top volleyball awardees, along with schoolmate Leo Aringo, Jr. who bagged the Player of the Year plum for UAAP Men's Volleyball. Arellano University's Carl Berdal and Benilde's Zam Nolasco were the NCAA Volleyball Players of the Year for their respective divisions. Kacey dela Rosa of Ateneo de Manila University, meanwhile, was the CPC Women's Basketball Player of the Year, and led the Mythical Team alongside Cielo Pagdulagan of National University, Kent Pastrana of University of Santo Tomas, Elaine Etang of Adamson, and Louna Ozar of UP. Football was also put on the spotlight as the CPC handed out the first Football Players of the Year awards to Amir Aningalan of San Beda University for the NCAA, and Mon Diansuy and Carmela Altiche of Far Eastern University for the UAAP. Coaches were also recognized in the said event as Randy Alcantara (Mapua men's basketball), Goldwin Monteverde (UP men's basketball), Aris Dimaunahan (NU women's basketball) were named Basketball Coaches of the Year. Sherwin Meneses (NU women's volleyball), Dante Alinsunurin (NU men's volleyball), Jerry Yee (Benilde women's volleyball), and Bryan Vitug (Arellano men's volleyball) were the Volleyball Coaches of the Year. —JKC, GMA Integrated News

Clint Escamis is CPC Basketball Player of the Year; Carl Berdal, Zam Nolasco take top volleyball honors for NCAA
Mapua University's Clint Escamis was named by the Collegiate Press Corps as its Basketball Player of the Year which will be given on Monday in its annual Awards Night. Escamis, the Season 99 Most Valuable Player, led the Cardinals to its first title since 1991 in NCAA Season 100. By the end of the elimination round, Escamis had averages of 15.44 points, 3.61 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 1.89 steals per game and was among the league's leaders in scoring, total assists, and steals in the past season. In the finals where the Cardinals swept De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, Escamis posted averages of 24.5 points, 4.0 assists and 4.0 steals to be named as Finals MVP. Carl Berdal of Arellano University and Benilde's Zam Nolasco, meanwhile, were named as the Collegiate Press Corps NCAA Men's and Women's Volleyball Players of the Year, respectively. Berdal was named the Finals MVP of the Season 100 men's volleyball tournament as he led the Chiefs to its first title in men's volleyball. The Arellano veteran was among the league's top scorers at 11th place with a total of 255 points, a leader in spiking with 44.19% success rate, and second overall in receiving with an efficiency rate of 56.84%. Nolasco, on the other hand, was crucial in the Lady Blazers' campaign to reach their fourth straight title. The third year middle blocker was 12th overall in scoring with 211 points, and number one in blocking with 0.73 average by set, which earned her a spot in the league's Best Middle Blockers this season. In Game 1 of the finals, Nolasco paced Benilde with 21 points, eight from blocks, as the Lady Blazers eventually won the title. UAAP back-to-back MVP Kacey Dela Rosa of Ateneo de Manila University, meanwhile, was named as the Collegiate Press Corps Women's Basketball Player of the Year, while Bella Belen and Leo Aringo of National University were the top players in UAAP volleyball. —JKC, GMA Integrated News

San Beda's Amir Aningalan among first football awardees of Collegiate Press Corps
NCAA San Beda University's Amir Aningalan is among the Collegiate Press Corps' first football awardees in its upcoming Awards Night on June 30. Aningalan, the Most Valuable Player of NCAA Seasons 99 and 100, is set to be recognized as the CPC NCAA Football Player of the Year. This is the first time that the group of writers covering the UAAP and NCAA decided to recognize top student-athletes in football. Aside from being back-to-back MVP, Aningalan delivered the much-needed goals of the Red Booters in both finals stints where they went against De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde. San Beda, meanwhile, has been a dominant force in NCAA football and has won 26 titles overall. Over in the UAAP, Far Eastern University's Mon Diansuy and Carmela Altiche were named as the CPC Men's and Women's Football Players of the Year. Diansuy, a goalkeeper, was instrumental in FEU's championship run against Ateneo de Manila University where they won over penalties, 1-1 (5-4). Altiche, on the other hand, played a key role in FEU'S 3-2 win over La Salle in the Finals as she not only converted a penalty in the 45+7th minute, but also made a crucial cross to Regine Rebosura for the goal in the 67th minute. Top student-athletes from basketball and volleyball will also be recognized in the Awards Night which will be held at the Discovery Suites Manila. —JKC, GMA Integrated News

Geylang's Tomoyuki Doi up for top honours at SPL Awards Night after record-breaking season

ST PHOTO: DESMOND WEE SINGAPORE – Geylang International striker Tomoyuki Doi will have the chance to round off a sensational season at the Singapore Premier League (SPL) Awards Night, after being named among the nominees for several honours on May 27. The Japanese star will receive the SPL Golden Boot and a special recognition award after scoring a league-record 44 goals in 31 appearances, surpassing former Singapore Armed Forces FC forward Mirko Grabovac's previous mark of 38 goals in a 33-game campaign in 2001. His attacking exploits have also earned him a spot on the shortlist for the AIA SPL Player of the Year, alongside Lion City Sailors' defender Bailey Wright and forward Shawal Anuar, who played key roles in their club's title victory. Doi, 27, said: 'I'm honoured to be nominated for the two awards. I really am grateful for everyone's support, especially those who supported me in the last 1½ years when I joined Geylang. The key to being where I am is that I have always believed in myself and kept the focus on getting better. It's as simple as that, nothing special.' Due to be held at the Orchard Hotel on June 1, the event will see the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) celebrate standout performances from the SPL and the SPL Under-21 League, with accolades to be presented across 13 categories. The Eagles had more reason to celebrate, with coach Noor Ali nominated for the Polar Mineral Water Coach of the Year award after leading Geylang to a third-placed finish – their best since 2003, when they were runners-up. Also up for the award are the Sailors' title-winning coach Aleksandar Rankovic, a first-time nominee, and BG Tampines Rovers' Gavin Lee. With the Sailors in the running for several top awards, their sporting director Badri Ghent hailed this as a team effort by everyone in the club. In addition to claiming their second SPL title, the Sailors also impressed on the continental stage with a historic run to the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Champions League Two final, where they lost 2-1 to the United Arab Emirates' Sharjah FC. Ghent said: 'It's a proud moment for everyone at Lion City Sailors and we're humbled to be up for such awards. 'They reflect not just the performances on the pitch, but the countless hours of hard work behind the scenes – from the players and coaches to the support staff and entire backroom team.' He hopes the club can continue their progress after an exceptional season, adding: 'To bag these honours will be a befitting end to what has been a long and memorable season. We'd also like to thank FAS for recognising our efforts in the AFC Champions League Two. 'As a club, we continually challenge ourselves to be even better each season. We will continue to build on the momentum that has been laid this season and, hopefully, represent Singapore football with pride and dignity on the continental stage in the coming years.' The AIA Young Player of the Year category features familiar talent and fresh faces. Seia Kunori is back in the running, this time as a Tampines player, having clinched the award in 2023 while playing for then-champions Albirex Niigata. The attacker is joined by Hougang United winger Farhan Zulkifli and first-time nominee Shingo Nakano, who plies his trade as a forward for Albirex. Holloway honoured alongside Klopp and Mourinho at LMA Awards
Ian Holloway was honoured alongside Jurgen Klopp and Jose Mourinho as he was officially inducted into the League Managers' Association's Hall of Fame 1,000 Club. The Swindon Town manager was one of five presented with a commemorative shield at the LMA Awards Night for reaching 1,000 competitive games in management. After a four-year hiatus, Holloway finally got above the four-figure mark against his former club Grimsby Town in December as Swindon were victorious by three goals to one. The event also saw the LMA hand out their various managerial awards for the season, with Arne Slot taking home the most prestigious honour of Manager of the Year, having delivered Liverpool's second Premier League title in his first season in the job. Leeds United's Daniel Farke won Championship Manager of the Year, Chris Davies of Birmingham City won the League One prize, Grant McCann in League Two after winning the title with Doncaster Rovers, Sonia Bompastor the Barclays Women's Super League Manager of the Year for her undefeated season with Chelsea Women, and Jay Sadler of Portsmouth Women for the Barclays Women's Championship. In addition to these, Oliver Glasner, Eddie Howe, Ange Postecoglou, and Renee Slegers all received the LMA John Duncan Award for the historic successes they brought to Crystal Palace, Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur, and Arsenal Women, respectively.
