The 2024 season of Major League Cricket (MLC) wrapped up in emphatic fashion with Washington Freedom clinching the title in a one-sided final against San Francisco Unicorns. Held across two venues — Grand Prairie Stadium in Texas and Church Street Park in North Carolina — the second edition of the American T20 league delivered thrilling cricket, standout performances, and a clear message: MLC is here to stay.
Washington Freedom, led by a well-rounded squad and clinical consistency, hammered San Francisco by 96 runs in the final to lift their maiden MLC title. The Freedom dominated the tournament from the outset, finishing top of the league table with five wins and a no-result in their seven matches, tied on 11 points with San Francisco but ahead on net run rate.

All six franchises from the inaugural season returned — Washington Freedom, San Francisco Unicorns, Texas Super Kings, MI New York, Los Angeles Knight Riders and Seattle Orcas.
Matches were split between the 7,200-capacity Grand Prairie Stadium and the more intimate 3,500-seater Church Street Park.
Defending champions MI New York struggled to replicate last year's magic, just about edging into the playoffs thanks to a better net run rate than LA Knight Riders, after both teams ended the league stage with five points. Seattle Orcas finished at the bottom.
In the playoffs, Washington comfortably defeated San Francisco in Qualifier 1 to book a direct ticket to the final.

Olson wins Western States 100 in California, Jornet third
American ultra-trail runner Caleb Olson was a surprise winner of California's grueling Western States Endurance Run on Saturday, emerging from the scorching canyons of Northern California to claim victory ahead of Spanish star Kilian Jornet, who finished third. HT Image Billed as one of the most competitive editions in the race's 52-year history, this year's running of the 100-mile event lived up to the hype. Around 15 elite runners crested the course's high point around 2,600 meters above sea level just after sunrise following a 5:00 am start at Olympic Valley. After weaving through chilly snowfields of the Sierra Nevada mountains, runners then faced the brutal heat of canyons where temperatures neared 104 degrees Fahrenheit . The unforgiving combination of extreme heat and rugged terrain coupled with around 5,500 meters of climbing took its usual toll on the field. Maintaining an average pace of nearly 12 kilometers per hour, Olson, 29, surged to the front midway through the race and never looked back. He broke the tape at the finishing point at Auburn High School in 14 hours, 11 minutes and 25 seconds just two minutes shy of Jim Walmsley's course record . Walmsley, a three-time winner, withdrew from this year's race. After placing fifth in 2024, Olson's victory cements his place among the elite of ultra-trail running. The Salt Lake City native had previously earned top-20 finishes at the "CCC", the 100-km sister race to the famous Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc in Chamonix. Chris Myers claimed second after going shoulder-to-shoulder with Olson for much of the race. Spaniard Jornet was third, in a repeat of his finish at the Western States in 2010. Jornet, 37, returned to take part in this year's event 14 years after his lone victory in the race, determined to test himself against a new generation of athletes on the fast, exposed trails of California. Despite his renowned mental toughness, Jornet was unable to close the gap during the hottest parts of the race. Over the past 15 years, he has helped boost the profile of trail running, broadening the appeal of the niche endurance pursuit. Even with elite preparation and cutting-edge cooling strategies, no one is immune to the challenges posed by the Western States. Simply earning a bib to race in the event which is limited to 369 entrants is a feat in itself. Elite runners may qualify through one of the 30 "Golden Tickets" awarded at select races. For everyone else, entry depends on a livestreamed annual lottery that draws nearly 10,000 hopefuls, some of whom wait a decade for their name to be called. For first-time applicants, the odds hover around 0.04 percent, improving only with years of patience and additional qualifying ultras. Even after overcoming the hurdles to entry, some runners fail to last the course. Among those who were forced to withdraw this year was American runner David Roche, a rising star of the sport who had won both of his previous 100-milers. Greeted with loud cheers at the Foresthill aid station at mile 62, Roche appeared visibly shaken and was eventually forced to withdraw. "I'm worried about David," his father, Michael Roche, told AFP. "I've never seen him in that kind of state." rg/rcw/sco ROCHE HOLDING This article was generated from an automated news agency feed without modifications to text.

Houser goes 7 and Benintendi homers as White Sox blank Giants 1-0
Jun 29, 2025 08:56 AM IST CHICAGO — Adrian Houser pitched seven sharp innings and Andrew Benintendi homered in the sixth as the Chicago White Sox beat the San Francisco Giants 1-0 on Saturday. HT Image Houser allowed four hits and a walk while striking out five before giving way to Grant Taylor. He fanned two in two hitless innings for his second save in his eighth career appearance. Benintendi hit his 10th home run — a two-out shot to right-center field on a 2-0 pitch from Robbie Ray , who gave up four hits and struck out six in six innings. Michael A. Taylor had a one-out double in the Chicago seventh but was thrown out at home by right fielder Mike Yastrzemski on Josh Rojas' hit when Taylor slid and failed to touch the plate. Giants rookie Christian Koss batted in the leadoff spot for the first time and had the only hit off Houser through five innings. Koss finished 2 for 4. It was the fourth 1-0 loss this season for San Francisco , which has lost 11 of its last 15 games. Chicago won for the fourth time in 16 games. Brett Wisely and Koss had consecutive singles off Houser to begin the sixth and both advanced on a balk. Rafael Devers struck out on a foul tip and catcher Edgar Quero threw to third to pick off Wisely for the second out. Heliot Ramos flied out to end the inning. Chicago evened the series 1-1 and is 19-11 all-time against San Francisco. The White Sox hadn't announced who will start Sunday's series finale opposite Giants RHP Justin Verlander . MLC 2025: Mitchell Owen stars in Washington Freedom's win, ends San Francisco Unicorns' unbeaten streak
Mitchell Owen of Washington Freedom celebrates getting the wicket of Brody Couch of San Francisco Unicorns during match 19 of the Cognizant Major League Cricket season 3 between Washington Freedom and San Francisco Unicorns held at the Grand Prairie cricket stadium, Grand Prairie, United States of America (USA). (Sportzpics) The San Francisco Unicorns' unbeaten streak in MLC 2025 finally came to an end, though they remain at the top of the points table, now holding their position only on the basis of a superior net run rate. Mitchell Owen's sensational five-wicket haul led Washington Freedom to a 12-run victory in Dallas on Saturday. Unicorns skipper Matthew Short continued his strong form with the bat as his side chased a modest target of 170—a score that looked manageable given recent high-scoring games. Despite little support from Finn Allen and Jake Fraser-McGurk, Unicorns reached 52 for 1 during the powerplay. Short eventually found some backing from Sanjay Krishnamurthi, but after Short fell in the 11th over for a commanding 67—out of the 97 total—the chase quickly unraveled. With only 73 required, the Unicorns' middle order appeared to be in control. That was when Owen took charge with the ball. He removed Short in his first over and then dismissed Hassan Khan and Romario Shepherd in successive deliveries soon after. Assisted by wickets from Jack Edwards and Ian Holland, the Unicorns collapsed to 113 for 7 by the 16th over. Owen returned in the 19th over to clean up tailenders Haris Rauf and Brody Couch, finishing with remarkable figures of 5 for 17. With 27 needed off the final over, Jahmar Hamilton fought valiantly with an unbeaten 31 from 18 balls, but Saurabh Netravalkar held his nerve, conceding only 14 runs to seal the win. Earlier, after choosing to bat, Freedom were in deep trouble at 13 for 3 inside three overs, courtesy of a fiery opening burst from Xavier Bartlett, who removed Owen (first ball), Rachin Ravindra, and Andries Gous. Glenn Maxwell fell cheaply, but Jack Edwards and Glenn Phillips steadied things with a 71-run stand off 64 balls. Phillips then shifted gears during a 31-run partnership in just 12 deliveries with Obus Pienaar. After Phillips departed for a 39-ball 58, Pienaar finished with an unbeaten 37 off 16 balls alongside Mukhtar Ahmed. Major League Cricket 2025 Explained: Teams, Schedule & Where to Watch Both teams now share six wins in seven matches, though the Unicorns boast a commanding net run rate advantage—2.016 compared to Washington's 0.603. Brief Scores Washington Freedom: 169/6 in 20 overs (Glenn Phillips 58, Jack Edwards 42, Obus Pienaar 30*; Xavier Bartlett 32/4, Romario Shepherd 28/1) San Francisco Unicorns: 157/9 in 20 overs (Matthew Short 67, Jahmar Hamilton 31*, Sanjay Krishnamurthi 24; Mitchell Owen 17/5, Ian Holland 23/1, Amila Aponso 23/1) Game On Season 1 continues with Mirabai Chanu's inspiring story.
