HCSTSI-Hyderabad Police's liaison termed vital for peace
He remarked that 'Hyderabad is the face of Sindh and resolving the issues of the public and traders has always remained among the top priorities of the police.'
Speaking on the concerns raised by President Hyderabad Chamber of Small Traders & Small Industry (HCSTSI) Saleem Memon, through a formal memorandum, SSP highlighted that the Safe City Project is a comprehensive and major initiative, and a detailed survey in this regard has already been completed. He added that the Madadgar-15 office is operational in Latifabad, while the Talash mobile application is also functional in Hyderabad and urged the business community to make active use of it.
Acknowledging the shortage of police personnel in Hyderabad, SSP stated that despite limited manpower, the department is making earnest efforts to curb criminal activities. He further informed that over 550 new personnel have recently been recruited, and efforts are underway to have them join by June. 'Out of these, more than 150 officers will be trained for the Rapid Response Force (RRF).'
He emphasized the importance of public awareness about the PECA law, designed to curb misuse of social media, and also urged parents to play a proactive role alongside police to help control one-wheeling incidents.
He appreciated the Chamber's proposal for more driving licence branches and assured that he would take up the matter with the IGP Sindh.
Referring to the increasing number of beggars in the city, he said that many of them are not genuinely needy and appropriate action would be initiated.
SSP Adeel Chandio welcomed the idea of introducing a Community Policing System and a Crowd Management Unit, assuring that steps would soon be taken in that direction. He reaffirmed the strong liaison between HCSTSI and the Hyderabad Police, which he said is vital for maintaining peace and improving law enforcement.
Earlier, HCSTSI President Saleem Memon, while addressing the session, appreciated SSP Chandio's strict measures against narcotics and recommended organizing open courts for public redressal. He highlighted that during the tenure of former SSP Sajid Sadozai, the police force was increased to 800, which was later raised to 1,600 by SSP Farrukh Lanjar and has now reached 2,000. However, further increase is necessary to meet growing challenges. He noted that over 550 personnel are deployed for VIP security alone.
He emphasized that five out of the 28 police stations operate out of properties owned by other departments and must be transferred under police ownership. Issues surrounding the police property at Al-Rahim Shopping Centre should also be permanently resolved. Furthermore, he demanded the establishment of driving licence branches in Latifabad and the main city, and suggested the media cell be supervised by a CSS officer.

Police to secure Korangi Industrial Zone with modern surveillance
The police reached the spot and foiled the attempt, arresting eight members of the mafia. PHOTO: EXPRESS Listen to article Deputy Inspector General (DIG) East, Dr Farrukh Ali, has announced a comprehensive security upgrade for Korangi Industrial Area, pledging use of modern surveillance tools, trained personnel, and improved communication systems to protect the business community, as per a statement released on Thursday. During a visit to the Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI), Dr Ali told industrialists that police will install surveillance cameras, license plate scanners, facial recognition software, and central monitoring units under the Safe City Project. Human surveillance alone, he said, is not enough in a city the size of Karachi. The DIG added that 590 new Assistant Sub-Inspectors will be deployed soon. An anti-encroachment operation is also underway along the National Highway to improve traffic flow and disrupt criminal hideouts. KATI President Junaid Naqi urged more patrols and faster implementation of the Safe City Project, while Deputy Patron Zubair Chhaya demanded tougher action against criminal groups posing as labour bodies. Dr Ali acknowledged rising street crime but noted major crimes have decreased citywide. He praised KATI's support and called for greater community-police collaboration. Standing Committee Chairman Danish Khan highlighted growing issues like employee abductions, theft, and encroachments, calling for urgent action, especially removal of roadside eateries being used as criminal dens.

Govt urges crackdown on 'digital terrorism'
The government on Friday urged the social media companies to immediately remove terrorist contents from their platforms using artificial intelligence (AI), stressing global cooperation against digital terrorism, including data sharing. Addressing a joint press conference in Islamabad with Minister of State for Law Barrister Aqeel Malik, Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry emphasised that the removal of terrorist contents from social media did not intended to silence freedom of expression, but to build a wall against the menace. "I want to request social media operators and platforms to cooperate with us on the blockade and removal of accounts, taking measures to stop mirror accounts and to share information of account holders who are operating these accounts," Chaudhry said. Earlier this week, Chaudhry had highlighted how a terrorist group was using WhatsApp channels to "disseminate hateful content and harmful narratives". He told the joint presser that 2,417 complaints related to terrorism on social media were under consideration by the relevant authorities. "Pakistan is a bulwark against terrorism. We have detected hundreds of social media accounts linked to terrorism. Outfits like TTP, IS-K, BLA and BLF are spreading propaganda and recruiting youth through the social media," he said. On the occasion, Barrister Aqeel said that terrorism and propaganda were punishable offenses under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (Peca). "Pakistan has demanded closure of terrorist accounts, automatic blocking, and access to data from social media platforms," he said.

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has scheduled hearing on the petitions challenging the controversial Prevention of Electronic Crimes (PECA) Amendment Act 2025. Justice Raja Inaam Ameen Minhas will take up the petitions on September 18. Earlier, Justice Minhas had held a hearing on July 7, during which the arguments had begun but the court did not set the next hearing date at that timewhich has now been announced. The petitions have been filed by the PFUJ, television anchors, and the Islamabad High Court Journalists Association. In the previous hearing, Dr Yasir Aman, the lawyer for PFUJ, presented arguments and is expected to continue them at the next hearing as well. The National Assembly on January 23 of this year amended the country's cybercrime law — PECA, 2016 — granting the government expanded powers to regulate and control social media platforms amid protest by journalists and right activists. Several groups and individuals later filed petitions against the amended law in different high courts of the country including the IHC.
