How Tom Brady-Antonio Brown friendship factored into Bill Belichick's shock $5,000 milk purchase

New York Post19-05-2025
A pricey ingredient bound the early days of Tom Brady's and Antonio Brown's friendship.
That's according to former Patriots coach Bill Belichick, who spilled the tea — err, $5,000 worth of milk — when discussing the polarizing wide receiver's brief tenure in New England on 'The Pivot' podcast as part of a promotional run for his new book, 'The Art of Winning: Lessons from My Life in Football.'
'One of the funny stories in the book is the Antonio Brown story. He was only with the Patriots for 11 days,' Belichick said, as covered by Fox News. 'And, Tom's very nutrition-oriented. Antonio wanted to… Tom had Antonio come and stay at his house, wanted to embrace him, bring him onto the team and so forth.

'… Antonio ordered this special milk for Brady, it cost $5,000. And, to make a long story short, it kinda got mixed up and ended up in the mailroom for too long, and the milk went bad.'

Brown, who landed with the Patriots early into the 2019 regular season after a wild breakup with the Raiders, ultimately got an assist from team brass when it came to replacing his original gift to Brady, known for his restrictive diet.

'So, we go out and get $5,000 worth of milk, this special milk, and give it to Brady from Antonio, even though, you know. So now, we turn in an expense report like $5,000 worth of milk. Sometimes, you've just got to do the right thing, and I didn't want to ruin the relationship between Brown and Brady on this spoiled milk,' Belichick said.

Brown's run with the Patriots lasted just one game as he was released by the team in September 2019 in light of sexual assault allegations.

However, the honeymoon phase between Brown and the Bucs fizzled a season later when he exited a January 2022 mid-game and was booted from the team.
And, like days-old milk left to sit in a mailroom, Brown's friendship with Brady also soured.

Brown has repeatedly taken shots at Brady, even going after the seven-time Super Bowl winner's personal life, namely his divorce from Gisele Bündchen in October 2022.
Brady eventually called it a career following his third season in Tampa Bay, retiring in February 2023 and 23 seasons total.
He's currently preparing for his sophomore season as Fox's lead NFL analyst.

As for Belichick, he, too, is embarking on a new era as head coach of the UNC Tar Heels.
The eight-time Super Bowl winner has found himself at the center of headlines in recent weeks following a disastrous appearance on 'CBS Sunday Morning,' when 24-year-old girlfriend Jordon Hudson punted a question about the origins of their relationship.
Belichick, 73, met the former college cheerleader on a flight in 2021 before making their relationship public three years later.

Jalen Hurts gets tip from Michael Jordan on how to win another Super Bowl: ‘He used every word but repeat'

PHILADELPHIA — Jalen Hurts calls Michael Jordan a friend — the two cigar aficionados were photographed rubbing shoulders over the summer in Greece — so when the retired Chicago Bulls great offers advice, perhaps it's best to listen. Jordan's Bulls won six NBA titles in the 1990s, so his words of wisdom to Hurts following the Philadelphia Eagles' Super Bowl victory resonated with the QB. At the top of the list? 'He used every word but repeat,' Hurts said with a laugh. One by one, from coach Nick Sirianni to Hurts to general manager Howie Roseman to offensive lineman Jordan Mailata, the Eagles stood firm Wednesday on the first day of training camp that the word 'repeat' for the 2024 champions is not part of the vernacular around the complex. 'We're not defending nothing,' Mailata said, later tossing in a profanity for emphasis. 'We're not the defending champs. We're the 2024 world champs, that's it.' Hurts, named the Super Bowl MVP of the Eagles' 40-22 thrashing of the Kansas City Chiefs, said he appreciated Jordan's advice. The best approach in 2025 is for the Eagles to took at the season as a blank canvas, that it's 'purely about resetting,' rather than rambling on about a repeat, which would shift focus to what they accomplished last season. Maybe that's why Hurts was never photographed wearing the Super Bowl ring in the scores of photos released on social media from last week's ceremony. While most Eagles players were snapped flashing the gaudy bling, Hurts simply held the box in his photos. Hurts was cryptic when asked if he actually slipped on the ring — which includes wings on each side that release from the bezel and features 145 diamonds, celebrating the Eagles' 145 points scored in the playoffs. 'I've moved on to the new year,' Hurts said. 'It's as simple as that.' Hurts did say the ceremony allowed him to appreciate the title'one last time.' Only the ones in uniform have truly moved on from the Super Bowl. Super Bowl swag blanketed fans and most of them stopped to pose next to the oversized Super Bowl replica ring that greeted them as they made the walk to the field. Fans in Super Bowl gear crushed beers in the parking lot as they waited for the gates to open for camp. Unlike the die-hard revelers, Mailata noted, 'I'm not trying to be hung over.' Mailata was talking about the so-called Super Bowl hangover, of course, and how the Eagles are taking steps like banning the word repeat in a bid to … well, win a Super Bowl for the second straight season. The players who talked to the media bulked up on buzzwords such as chemistry and culture and reiterated the 'tough, detailed, together' mantra that inspired them last season. Just in case they forget, those words are also stamped on the ring. 'I truly felt like a true champion,' wide receiver A.J. Brown said of the ring ceremony. 'I came there only for the ring. I didn't eat, I didn't do anything.' Saquon Barkley, who became the ninth 2,000-yard season rusher in NFL history, said it was easy to turn the page after a whirlwind offseason that included a parade, a White House visit and, even for the All-Pro running back, a video game cover. 'Howie asked me, what's better, the confetti or the ring,' Barkley said. How about a new contract? (For the record, Barkley said it was the ring.) Roseman put the Eagles in prime position to repe … er, win the Super Bowl again with a busy offseason that included making Barkley the highest-paid running back in NFL history, giving him a two-year extension and $36 million guaranteed. The Eagles retained All-Pro linebacker Zack Baun before he could test free agency, center Cam Jurgens got a four-year extension and Sirianni received a multiyear extension too. It's all just part of the recipe that add up to the Eagles having the best odds in the NFC to win the Super Bowl at 7-1, according to BetMGM Sportsbook. With Brandon Graham retired and Darius Slay and C.J. Gardner-Johnson having moved on, Sirianni said he was ready to get to work in camp and learn about his new roster. 'It's so important at this time to come together as a football team,' Sirianni said. 'You do that through suffering together.' Suffering in Philly? What year is this, 1998? The Eagles have played in three of the last eight Super Bowls and won two of them. They are no longer loveable underdogs but a model NFL franchise with yearly championship expectations. So what if the Eagles don't want to call it a repeat bid inside the locker room? 'You're not looking back, you're not looking forward,' Sirianni said. Yeah, but take a look around and let it soak in that, for only the second time in franchise history, the Super Bowl champs are here.

Treylon Burks hopes to stay healthy to show "who I know I am"

Former Titans General Manager Jon Robinson traded Pro Bowl receiver A.J. Brown to the Eagles before drafting Treylon Burks with the 18th overall pick in 2022. Brown has 261 receptions for 4,031 yards and 25 touchdowns, a Super Bowl and two Pro Bowls in the three seasons since. Burks has 53 receptions for 699 yards and one receiving touchdown in 27 games in his career. He had his fifth-year option declined, so he heads into the final season on his contract returning from an ACL injury and fighting for a roster spot. 'The last three years I would say my injuries have limited me and kept me from being who I know I am,' Burks said Wednesday, via Terry McCormick of 'I just think with me being in shape, being healthy, doing the right things right, and just making sure I'm staying on top of the little things. I just feel like I'm in a good place. God has brought me from the lowest to the highs, from the lowest to the highs. I'm blessed. I think [God] and the people that have been helping me. I'm just excited to see what plan [God] has for me.' General Manager Mike Borgonzi, the team's third G.M. since Burks was drafted, said Monday that Burks was in good shape after being cleared for camp. Burks has accepted the challenge awaiting him. 'I'm a competitor. If you're a competitor, you know you can do better,' Burks said. 'You can be better, so you expect more out of yourself. I wouldn't say I got down. I was just pissed at myself because I wasn't where I wanted to be. Things happen. It's part of the process. It's just how you come out of that whole situation, but as long as you're yourself, everything will be all right.'

Baker Mayfield: Every other team wanted me to tone it down, Bucs want me to be myself

The Buccaneers are Baker Mayfield's fourth NFL team. And he says there's no question that Tampa Bay is the right place for him. Mayfield said on Jason and Travis Kelce's New Heights podcast that in his four years with the Browns, plus his brief stints with the Panthers and Rams, his teams wanted him to change. But Buccaneers General Manager Jason Licht and head coach Todd Bowles told him from the beginning that they wanted him to be who he is. 'This isn't to shit on the other teams and franchises, but when you step in and your GM and your head coach say, 'Hey, just be you,' after I've been told at every stop and everywhere I go, 'You need to tone it down a little bit, you need to be a franchise quarterback.' It's just not who I am,' Mayfield said. 'I wear my emotions on my sleeves. I'm gonna talk shit, I'm going to do whatever, but when it's time to turn the lights on and go do something I'm going to do it. So when I stepped into the building they all told me to just be myself.' Mayfield has played his best football in Tampa Bay, raising questions about what might have been in Cleveland, if only the Browns had done what the Buccaneers have done, and encouraged him to be who he is.
