Dowry of 300 gold sovereigns, ₹70 lakh car not enough? Tamil Nadu bride dies by suicide, blames husband, in-laws
The incident took place on Saturday in Tamil Nadu's Tiruppur district.
The woman, identified as 27-year-old Rithanya, was married to 28-year-old Kavin Kumar in a grand ceremony on 11 April 2025.
News18 reported that Rithanya's family gave a lavish dowry of 300 sovereigns of gold and a ₹ 70 lakh Volvo car, spent ₹ 2.5 crore on the wedding, and promised to give an additional 200 sovereigns.
She was relentlessly harassed by Kavin, father-in-law Easwaramoorthy, and mother-in-law Chithradevi, who demanded the remaining 200 sovereigns, the media report said.
She was also subjected to humiliation over minor issues, forcing her to stand for hours, among other acts of cruelty.
On 29 June, Rithanya visited the Thalakkarai Lakshmi Narasimha Perumal Temple. Later, she bought pesticide from Seyur, and while en route to the Mondipalayam Perumal Temple, she consumed it inside her car parked by the roadside, the report said.
Later, the police were informed, and Rithanya was rushed to Avinashi Government Hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival.
Before the suicide, the woman sent a WhatsApp voice message to her father, Annadurai, holding Kavin Kumar and her in-laws responsible for her death.
The police have lodged a case of abetment to suicide and arrested Kavin Kumar, his father and mother.
The tragic incident has sparked public outrage, with the victim's family members staging a protest at the hospital. They are demanding immediate action against the accused.
Her audio message has gone viral on social media, intensifying calls for justice.
Three women were arrested in Ballia district in connection with the alleged murder of a newly-wed woman over the matter of dowry, officials said on 21 June.
Sapna (22), wife of Narendra Chauhan, was found dead in a room at her in-laws' house in Kotwa village, under the Maniyar Police Station area.
Her body was allegedly discovered in a position that suggested suicide, as it was found hanging from a ceiling fan, the police stated.
Maniyar Station House Officer (SHO) Ratnesh Dubey stated that upon receiving the information, the police reached the scene, took custody of Sapna's body, and sent it for post-mortem examination at the district hospital.

Shot, sidelined, shunted: UP IAS officer transferred 36 hours after sit-ups video goes viral; says 'won't stop doing what's right'
BAREILLY: An IAS officer, who once survived seven bullets after exposing a Rs 100-crore scam, was transferred within 36 hours of taking charge as sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) in Shahjahanpur's Powayan. The move came on Monday, hours after Rinku Singh Rahi hit the headlines once again - this time for performing sit-ups before a group of lawyers and cancelling two unpublicised land auctions. A video of the "uthak-baithak" was shared on social media. Rahi believes it may have cost him the post. Shahjahanpur DM Dharmendra Pratap Singh, however, told TOI, "Rahi's transfer was initiated by the state govt and I have no idea about the precise reason behind it." The auctions involved rights to village fish ponds and cattle shed land in Simra Viran. They were scheduled without public announcements, he said, a technical omission that could prevent fair bidding. "More people deserve the chance to participate in such auctions. My decision may have upset some people," Rahi, a 2022 batch IAS officer, said. On the same day, he directed revenue officers to identify encroachments on govt land and issue notices. "If no notice is issued within 15 days, an FIR will be filed against the lekhpal concerned," he warned. He also planned to digitise tehsil-level records, including court proceedings and document submissions. "People shouldn't have to file RTIs to get basic information," he said. After landing in the town for his latest posting, he proposed creating two WhatsApp groups in every village - one to allow residents to report absentee officials, and another to post complaints and their responses openly. "I had already done this in Mathura as a provincial civil services officer. This is not innovation. This is basic administration." But it was the sit-ups on Monday that drew public attention. After asking a clerk to do sit-ups for urinating in the open, Rahi himself performed sit-ups in front of lawyers at the tehsil premises after they pointed out filthy public toilets. "I took responsibility because I was the senior-most officer. If seniors lead by example, systems improve," he said. Asked whether the video led to his transfer, he said, "Could be. " He added: "I will serve wherever I'm posted. I'll not tolerate wrongdoing." In 2008, as a provincial civil service officer in Muzaffarnagar, he exposed irregular transfers of social welfare funds. "When I refused bribes and kept digging, I was warned," he said. On March 26, 2009, while playing badminton, he was shot in the face. The attack left him blind in one eye, with a bullet fragment lodged in his skull. "I lost everything except the will to fight," he said. Four years later, in 2012, after being denied promotion, he staged a dharna outside the social welfare directorate in Lucknow. Police forcibly admitted him to a psychiatric facility. A decade later, he cleared the UPSC exam under the physically challenged category at age 40, secured all-India rank 683, and joined the 2022-batch IAS under the Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD) quota, UP cadre. His tenure in Shahjahanpur lasted less than two days. His plans, he said, were simple: open the system to scrutiny, restore accountability, and make governance participatory.

15 Days After Male Snake's Death, ‘Naagin' Returns For ‘Badla' In UP Village
Last Updated: The incident took place in Saraotia village under the Aliganj police station area of Etah district. A village in Uttar Pradesh's Aliganj district witnessed a night of fear and panic after a female snake entered a house on the day of Nag Panchami, July 29. The snake's presence caused a stir among locals who believed it had come to avenge the death of a male snake that died in the same village about two weeks earlier. The incident reportedly took place in Saraotia village under the Aliganj police station area of Etah district. The female snake appeared at the house of a man named Pravesh Dixit and stayed there for hours and hissed continuously through the night, Free Press Journal reported. The villagers, alarmed by the situation and their long-held beliefs, said the snake's presence was not a coincidence. As per the villagers, a male snake had been killed about 15 days ago by mistake at Dixit's house. On the occasion of Nag Panchami, they believe the female snake, 'Naagin', came to seek revenge. This belief is rooted in several parts of India where snakes especially during the month of Sawan are considered sacred. It is often said in folklore that if one snake is killed, its partner may return to avenge its death. Due to this belief, the presence of the snake led to widespread fear in the village. The entire family living in the house along with many neighbours spent the night in anxiety. A video showing forest officials trying to catch the snake has also surfaced online. It shows the snake resisting by raising its hood repeatedly. — MANOJ SHARMA LUCKNOW UP🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳 (@ManojSh28986262) July 30, 2025 Eventually, the team managed to capture the snake without harm. Officials Say Monsoon Drives Snakes Out A forest department official said that due to the rainy season, snakes often enter homes while searching for prey like rats. In this case, the snake may have been hungry and had not hunted for a while which could be why it stayed in one place. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
