Unemployed woman loses RM62k to phone scam in Jertih
JERTIH: A 19-year-old unemployed woman was cheated out of RM62,000 in a phone scam where fraudsters posed as police officers. The incident occurred yesterday afternoon in Besut.
According to Besut district police chief Supt Azamuddin Ahmad @ Abu, the victim received a call on her father's phone from someone claiming to be a Touch 'n Go headquarters representative. The caller alleged that her father had an outstanding RM25,000 summons linked to a Touch 'n Go account.
The call was then transferred to a supposed Perak police contingent officer, who further intimidated the victim by stating that a bank account under her father's name was involved in money laundering and drug-related crimes.
Fearing legal repercussions, the victim was instructed to pay RM60,000 to clear her father's name. In desperation, she sold her mother's jewellery to gather the funds. The case is now under investigation under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have received three reports following the Himpunan Rakyat Benci Rasuah 2.0 rally, which turned tense after a participant ignited a flare, sparking a scuffle between demonstrators and security personnel. The rally, organised by Sekretariat Rakyat Benci Rasuah and attended by around 100 participants, including student groups, began at Kompleks Sogo before moving towards Dataran Merdeka. Dang Wangi district police chief, Assistant Commissioner Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman, said a participant lit a flare during the rally, releasing thick smoke that posed a safety risk to others. He said officers quickly intervened to contain the situation, but a brief scuffle ensued, resulting in minor injuries to a policeman. "During the preventive action taken, a minor scuffle broke out between rally participants and personnel from Op Aman, resulting in minor injuries to one policeman. "The situation was quickly brought under control by police," he said in a statement today. Sulizmie said three police reports had been lodged, and investigations are ongoing under Section 353 of the Penal Code for using criminal force to deter a public servant from discharging their duties, as well as Sections 3(5) and 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955. Foreign man found dead with stab wounds in plantation home
LAHAD DATU: A foreign man was found dead, believed to have been murdered, at an unnumbered house in an oil palm plantation in Ulu Segangan, Silabukan, earlier today. Lahad Datu deputy police chief, Superintendent Jimmy Panyau, said the 23-year-old victim was discovered with stab wounds on his back, believed to have been inflicted with a sharp weapon. He said a team from the Criminal Investigation Division of the Lahad Datu district police headquarters was dispatched to the scene to carry out further investigations. "Following investigations at the location, police arrested a man and a woman, both aged 29, believed to be husband and wife. "Both were detained on the same day to assist in the investigation," he said in a statement today. Jimmy said a post-mortem examination will be conducted at Lahad Datu Hospital. He added that investigations are ongoing, including efforts to determine the motive behind the incident. "The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder," he said.
