The transformed touch points
Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity
celebrates outstanding creative work across various disciplines, honoring not just Grand Prix winners but also impactful silvers and bronzes. In our "
BE Extraordinary
" series, a collaboration with
Harsh Kapadia, CCO, Grey India
, we spotlight campaigns that truly warrant discussion for their strategic depth and exceptional execution. This installment focuses specifically on
Brand Experience and Activations
, showcasing how brands craft immersive, interactive encounters to forge direct connections with audiences, build lasting impressions, and drive tangible results in dynamic environments.
Fictional Insurance - Bogotá, DDB Colombia / RCN Prime
The "Fictional Insurance" campaign, a collaboration between an unspecified insurance entity in Bogotá, DDB Colombia, and RCN Prime, aimed to illustrate the relevance and benefit of insurance in an engaging and accessible manner. The initiative leveraged branded entertainment by integrating itself into a crime show broadcast on RCN Prime.
Viewers were provided with the interactive opportunity to "insure" fictional characters within the ongoing narrative of the show. Participants could predict the manner in which a specific character might die during the series. If their prediction accurately aligned with the plot's outcome, they would receive a real payout.
This novel approach served as an interactive activation, demonstrating the core concept of insurance payouts within an entertaining and relatable context, allowing audiences to experience the tangible benefit of coverage without overt promotional messaging.
Ads Cover Rent - Brahma Beer, Africa Creative DDB/São Paulo
Brahma, a prominent Brazilian beer brand with strong historical ties to the country's Carnival celebrations, launched the "Ads Cover Rent" initiative in collaboration with Africa Creative DDB, São Paulo. This campaign addressed the challenge of escalating accommodation costs in Brazil during the Carnival period, which often deters tourists.
The core of the initiative involved offering tourists who booked apartments through Airbnb a reduced rental fee. In exchange for this financial incentive, the renters agreed to display Brahma-branded banners on their balconies.
These banners were not generic; they were custom-designed to fit the specific size and aesthetic of each individual balcony. This provided a direct financial benefit to the vacationers while simultaneously securing prime advertising visibility for Brahma.
The strategically placed banners along parade routes effectively transformed private rented spaces into prominent, high-traffic advertising locations for the brand during one of Brazil's largest and most photographed cultural events, maximising brand exposure without the cost of official sponsorship.
The Kimberly Price - Plaza Vea, Fahrenheit DDB, Lima
Plaza Vea, a supermarket in Peru, launched "The Kimberly Price" campaign, developed with Fahrenheit DDB Lima, to stimulate viewership for Peruvian speed walker Kimberly Garcia's races during the Paris Olympics. A key challenge was that these races were scheduled for late-night hours in Peru, making widespread viewership difficult.
To incentivise audiences to tune in, Plaza Vea announced a unique promotion.
The pricing of a selection of electronic gadgets, including televisions, refrigerators, and mobile phones, would be directly linked to Kimberly Garcia's bib number.
This bib number was a dynamic element, only revealed moments before the start of her race. For instance, if her bib number was 146, certain promotional items would then be offered at a price of S/146 (Peruvian Soles). This mechanism generated significant curiosity and anticipation, directly motivating consumers to watch the live telecast at unconventional hours to discover the discounted prices.
The campaign successfully connected the supermarket's brand to national athletic pride and a shared viewing experience, extending beyond traditional promotional methods.
The Athlete's Code - Powerade (The Coca-Cola Company), Ogilvy New York
"The Athlete's Code" by Powerade, a brand from The Coca-Cola Company, addressed a significant and long-standing issue within professional sports: the potential loss of sponsorships for athletes who take necessary breaks due to injury, mental health struggles, or severe stress. In collaboration with Ogilvy New York, Powerade, which positions itself around athletic recovery, made a public commitment to integrate a specific, protective clause into its sponsorship contracts. This clause guaranteed that Powerade would continue to fulfill its financial obligations to sponsored athletes even if they needed to step away from competition for health-related reasons.
The initiative directly aligned with Powerade's core brand promise of supporting comprehensive recovery, extending beyond physical recuperation to include mental well-being. Furthermore, the campaign actively encouraged other brands within the industry to adopt similar protective clauses in their athlete agreements, aiming for systemic change.
The campaign was brought to life through a compelling film directed by Babak Khoshnoud, which featured prominent athletes such as Alex Morgan, Tatjana Smith, Linda Motlhalo, and Douglas Matera. These athletes shared their personal experiences and stories related to mental health challenges in their careers, adding authenticity and emotional depth to Powerade's commitment.
This narrative was amplified strategically across various digital platforms, social media channels, and notably, during the broadcast of the 2024 Summer Olympics. This multi-platform amplification fostered a global conversation about the critical importance of mental health within the demanding world of professional sports.

The F1 movie is visually revolutionary. That still can't make up for a weak storyline
F1 is produced by Lewis Hamilton and directed by Joseph Kosinski, who also directed Top Gun Maverick , and stars Brad Pitt as Sonny Hayes, an experienced driver who is making a comeback to the racecourse for one more chance at glory. Lewis Hamilton took it upon himself to guarantee precision in aspects like engine sounds and overtaking tactics. A notable instance featured a scene shot at the Hungaroring, where Hamilton suggested that a blue-flag pass should happen solely at turn 6 to accurately portray genuine racing strategies. These insider elements give F1 a level of authenticity that most sports dramas can only aspire to have. The F1 movie merges the boundaries between fiction and documentary, making it an enthralling visual experience for the sport's lovers. What has amazed me the most is the dedication to realism. Visually, F1 is nothing short of revolutionary. Konsinski deployed cutting-edge camera rigs, including helmet-mounted and car-embedded systems, to provide multiple angles that immerse the viewer in the cockpit experience. At one point, the burning rubber reeked my nose through the screen, and the screeching turns gave me an experience of the Monaco Grand Prix in real time. The result is an immersive visual experience of speed that critics across the board have praised. Pitt and his co-star Damson Idris, who portrays emerging talent Joshua Pearce, were dressed in suits and drove altered F2 vehicles in the film. They were driving for 'APXGP,' a fictional 11th team developed for the film. F1 follows a well-oiled formula. Initial resistance from teammates, baggage from Hayes' past, a will-they-wont-they dynamic with team technical director Kate (Kerry Condon), and an intense rivalry with Pearce. At one point, Hayes snaps at Pearce—'You have a deficient frontal cortex'—a line that manages to be both hilariously cutting and an unexpected crowd favourite. These elements act as narrative scaffolding, connecting the exhilarating racing set pieces that are the film's true heart. Also read: Arunachal Pradesh is the Davos of vroom vroom vroom. It's the motorsport hub of the rich Attention to detail What elevates the F1 movie is its self-awareness and sincerity. Kosinski isn't trying to reinvent the sports drama. However, he is updating it for the IMAX era. The charming Pitt embodies Hayes with a romanticised notion of coolness à la Robert Redford, with a dash of Maverick's swagger. The character's arc is very much predictable, but it is rendered with enough nuance to become rewarding and emotional. More importantly, the movie does right by the rich history of F1. There are understated references to icons such as Ayrton Senna, whose archival footage evokes his legacy throughout the movie, and a Monza banking scene eerily reminiscent of the imagery of Grand Prix from 1966. The attention to detail is quite astounding. Hamilton's involvement ensures that even the smallest cues, like the sound of gear changes or the pit stop choreography, are as authentic as possible. All this extends to the cultural elements as well. Real sponsors like IWC and SharkNinja appear on screen, and many real-life F1 drivers and personnel have cameos. Thus, this integration leads the film to a documentary-type edge, which is compelling for long-time F1 fans. But the modified F2 cars overtaking the F1 cars, even if fictitious, felt a bit laughable and unrealistic to me. But then I saw Hayes overtake Max Verstappen and Charles LeClerc. In real life, Verstappen would've won the race, gone home, had dinner and gotten a warning from RedBull for staying up late playing a simulator racing game like iRacing. However, watching Carlos Sainz clad in Ferrari red, Hamilton in Mercedes, and Daniel Ricciardo flash his iconic grin sent me on a trip down memory lane where every race was part thriller and fever dream. And the film, though an enthralling visual spectacle, felt monotonous as it lacked solid storytelling. Even the technical finesse started to blur into repetitive sequences. Sure, Pitt nails the swagger, but he is no Max Verstappen. Sana Cheryl Felix is an alumna of ThePrint School of Journalism. Views are personal. (Edited by Theres Sudeep)

Formula 1 to race in Austria through to 2041 with new extension
Spielberg (Austria): The iconic Austrian Grand Prix will remain on the F1 calendar through 2041 inclusive, following the long-term extension of Formula 1's contract with promoter Projekt Spielberg GmbH & Co KG. The Austrian Grand Prix boasts a long and prestigious history in Formula 1, having appeared on the calendar 37 times, with the first race taking place in 1964. The Red Bull Ring, situated in the Styrian mountains, first hosted the event in 1970 and offers one of the most picturesque settings for a Formula 1 race, with drivers navigating the 4.3 km circuit known for its elevation changes and mix of high- and low-speed corners that encourage wheel-to-wheel battles. The circuit dropped off the calendar in 2004, but in 2010 the late Dietrich Mateschitz invested in the Red Bull Ring, funding renovations that revitalised the facility and led to its return in 2014. Since then, the race has become a favourite among fans and drivers alike. A roll call of greats from Formula 1's 75-year history have taken the top step in Austria, including Alain Prost, Niki Lauda, Michael Schumacher and Alan Jones. Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1, said, "Austria has long been an incredibly special race for Formula 1 so it's fantastic we have secured the long-term future of a Grand Prix so deeply rooted in the sport's history. "The vision and passion of Dietrich Mateschitz gave the race the investment and attention that allowed it to return as an incredible event on the Formula 1 calendar. "Each year, returning to the stunning Styrian mountains is a highlight – an experience that evokes incredible emotion among our drivers, teams, and fans alike, creating an atmosphere unlike any other. "I want to extend my sincere thanks to Mark Mateschitz and Thomas Uberall and his team for their unwavering dedication to excellence, and to our incredible Austrian fanbase, whose enthusiasm and loyalty continue to elevate this iconic race." Four drivers from the current grid have also claimed victory in Austria. Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton, Charles Leclerc and George Russell have all triumphed at the Red Bull Ring, with Verstappen holding the record for the most wins on five (four under its guise as the Austrian Grand Prix and once when it featured as the Styrian Grand Prix in 2021). Mark Mateschitz added, 'I am delighted that Formula 1 will remain at the Red Bull Ring for many years to come. I am proud to continue my father's legacy and to preserve the rich history of motor racing in Styria and at the Red Bull Ring – with and, above all, for the people of the region. "Austria's close ties to Formula 1 are an excellent foundation for our long-term partnership. Working together, we intend to continue this success story for many years to come.' Thomas Uberall, General Manager of the Red Bull Ring, said, 'This long-term commitment to us by Formula 1 is a great honour and a wonderful challenge that we are happy to undertake on behalf of the fans and the Murtal region. "The new contract is of inestimable importance for the future. The long-term security of the Austrian Grand Prix will trigger further investment in infrastructure and means tremendous added value for the Murtal region, for Styria and for Austria."
