‘It'll Be $450:' Man Tries to Get a New Key for His 2022 Toyota Camry at the Dealership. Then He's Sent to the Parts Department

Motor 130-06-2025
A viral TikTok is making the rounds, parodying the frustration of a driver stuck in a dealership labyrinth just trying to get a replacement key fob. There's confusion, redirection, a VIN number scavenger hunt for the stranded 2022 Toyota Camry, and, of course, a bill that quickly climbs over $500 before labor even enters the chat. It's funny because it's true, and if you've ever lost your key fob or tried to get a spare, you know the pain.
The clip from automotive-minded creator Austin Conroy (@dealerplateguy) has been viewed more than 1.2 million times. It is likely resonating with viewers because of the absurd lengths drivers must go to these days when trying to replace a simple piece of equipment.
A $500 Problem in Your Pocket
Replacing a car key used to be a quick stop at the hardware store. Today, it's more like minor surgery on your vehicle's security system. Depending on the make and model, replacing a lost or damaged key fob can cost anywhere from $250 to over $750, according to data from
J.D. Power
.
Luxury vehicles and newer models equipped with keyless entry and start systems are especially pricey. A replacement fob for a standard vehicle, such as a
Toyota Camry
, can easily cost $450 just for the part, plus additional expenses for the emergency key blade, cutting service, battery, and programming. All told, it's not unusual for the total bill to surpass $500, with labor pushing it even higher.
So, Why the Steep Cost?
Modern key fobs are far more than simple remote-control devices. They're
packed
with encrypted chips, rolling code generators, proximity sensors, and sometimes even wireless charging systems. Many include
emergency blades
that must be laser-cut to match the car's locks—a precision job not every shop can handle.
The electronics are designed to
sync securely
with a vehicle's engine control unit. This requires programming tools that are either dealer-specific or only available to certified locksmiths. In many cases, programming must be done
through the OBD-II
port using proprietary software that verifies the fob's encrypted ID with the vehicle's onboard systems. Think less 'Bluetooth pairing,' more 'digital handshake with the engine.'
And that's before you add convenience features like remote start, power liftgate activation, or panic alarms, which can further increase both complexity and cost.
Is There a Cheaper Option?
Aftermarket key fobs do exist, and they can be dramatically cheaper. But it's a buyer-beware situation.
OEM (original equipment manufacturer) fobs are typically guaranteed to be compatible, come preloaded with the right firmware, and are covered by manufacturer warranties. Aftermarket fobs can work, but may lack features, be less durable, or require more trial-and-error programming.

According to locksmith and car tech forums like
r/locksmith
on Reddit, even experienced technicians sometimes encounter pairing issues with non-OEM units. Some insurance policies may also be voided if non-approved components cause problems with vehicle electronics.
Why It's So Complicated
You can't just walk into a store and grab a new fob like a remote for your TV. The key fob
must match
the car's exact trim level and security system, which often can't be identified without the VIN. Once the correct fob is located and ordered, which can take days, it needs to be
cut
, loaded with a working battery, and programmed. Each of those steps may be priced separately and handled by different people at the dealership or shop.
The best way to avoid the stress and sticker shock is simple: Get a spare fob before you need one.
If you only have one key for your car, getting a backup now will likely be cheaper and more convenient than dealing with a full replacement after it's lost. Many locksmiths can program a duplicate at
a lower cost
than the dealership, often in the $100–$250 range, depending on the vehicle.
Some insurance policies, roadside assistance plans, or vehicle warranties cover
lost key fobs
, either through reimbursement or direct replacement, though this varies by provider. It's worth calling your provider to check.
You can also find key fobs online, but keep in mind that many vehicles still require a professional to program the unit once it arrives. Not all cars support DIY pairing.

The deal also creates a $550 billion fund for Japan to invest in the US. Japan also agreed to purchase 100 Boeing aircraft, increase its purchases of US rice by 75%, and buy $8 billion in other agricultural products, while raising its defense spending with American firms to $17 billion annually, from $14 billion. Dead: Acura TLX

The mid-size luxury sedan has been a staple in the Acura lineup since the mid-1990s, when the first TL debuted. In 2015, we got the TLX, which underwent a facelift in 2018 just ahead of the second generation's arrival in 2021. Now, though, nearly a decade after the first TLX debuted in the US, it's being discontinued. Acura TLX Type S As first reported by Car and Driver , Acura will wind down production of the TLX later this month, which means 2025 will be the final model year for the longstanding luxury sedan. We've reached out to Acura for an official statement, but the company sent out a press release confirming: Acura will conclude production of the TLX performance sedan this month to better align with the evolving needs of our customers and the changing landscape of the automotive industry. It would make sense, though. Acura has only sold 3,634 TLX models in the first half of 2025, and the company managed just over 7,000 examples in all of 2024. That figure represented a 55 percent decrease from the previous year. In its best year—2015—Acura sold just over 47,000 TLX models. With the TLX soon gone, the compact Integra will be the only sedan left in the Acura lineup. Otherwise, Acura buyers will have to select from a swathe of SUV options ranging from the subcompact ADX to the three-row MDX. Built alongside the Honda Accord at the automaker's Marysville, Ohio, manufacturing plant, Acura will effectively replace the TLX—but not with another sedan. The upcoming RSX electric SUV will be built in Ohio at Honda's new EV Hub, and it will be the first vehicle in either the Acura or Honda lineup to use the auto conglomerate's new dedicated EV platform. At any rate, we'll be sad to see the TLX go. Pour One Out Why Isn't the Acura TLX Type S Better? Tesla Expected to Report Falling Profit as Car Sales Fall

Tesla is expected to report on Wednesday a slump in profit, the third quarterly decline in a row, as the company cut car prices in an attempt to revive sales. Analysts estimate that the company earned $1.2 billion from April to June, according to Bloomberg, down from $1.4 billion a year ago. Sales are expected to have fallen to $22.6 billion from $25.5 billion in the second quarter of 2024. Tesla has not reported an increase in quarterly profit since the third quarter of 2024. Tesla's weak earnings are likely to reinforce concern among some investors that Elon Musk is neglecting the car business while he focuses the company's resources on autonomous driving software, self-driving taxis and humanoid robots. Mr. Musk has said those technologies will make Tesla the most valuable company in the world. Tesla has begun testing a limited self-driving taxi service in Austin, Texas. Wall Street has largely bought into that vision, and the company's share price is up around 50 percent since early April. But such taxis and robots are not yet generating significant revenue for Tesla, and the company remains reliant on the car business to finance Mr. Musk's futuristic plans. Tesla's sales have been losing momentum because it is not offering more affordable and appealing new models even as other carmakers like BYD of China have rolled out many new vehicles while slashing prices. In addition, Mr. Musk's support for right-wing political causes has alienated many electric car buyers in Europe and the United States and has distracted him from running the company. Last month, he announced plans to form a new political party in the United States after his relationship with President Trump deteriorated. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.
