
Adam Schwab: Aussie CEO says working from home is the ‘worst thing ever'
Adam Schwab, Luxury Escapes chief executive, said his workers are expected to be in office for the entire five day working week.
He told the Herald Sun that working from home is 'the worst thing ever', and that it is hard to 'progress your career if you can't learn from other people'.
Mr Schwab went on to claim that work promotions are often based on 'who's in your proximity'.
'It's hard to progress your career if you can't learn from other people. If people can't see you. Unfortunately, getting promoted is often based on just who's in your proximity,' he said.
He says flexible working arrangements can be available when needed, but that employees must always provide a reason.
'Obviously, if someone has a real need we'll work around that.'
Luxury Escapes was founded in 2013 by both Mr Schwab and his friend from school, Jeremy Sane.
The company has grown from a small Australian based team, to a now global company with more than 600 employees.
Mr Schwab said Luxury Escapes' employee retention rate is very high, with less than 10 per cent leaving the company each year.
The CEO said this is a good number and that percentage of people leaving represents those who get a different job or are retiring.
He said he believes in collaboration, and told employees that would rather work from home to instead find another job, claiming Luxury Escapes is 'not for (them)'.
Luxury Escapes now has offices in Melbourne, Sydney, London, Barcelona and Singapore.
Mr Schwab began his professional career as a lawyer.
'I thought I really wanted to be a lawyer. And then you do it and you realise it's really not good. It's pretty boring. It's really long hours. I was an okay lawyer … but (there were) people who were really, really good lawyers. I wasn't ever going to be that.'
Both Mr Schawb and Mr Sane decided to leave their corporate jobs behind and started a short term accommodation business in Melbourne.
They then created Luxury Escapes after deciding to work in the travel business, and the company now has more than eight million members.

Celebrations chocolate in big return just months after being pulled from Australian shelves
An Australian-favourite chocolate variety box will return to supermarket shelves, just months after it was discontinued. Cost and supply challenges were blamed when it was announced in November that Celebrations would no longer be available in Australia. The decision left social media in shock and customers scrambling to source a box from quickly dwindling supply. But people power is now being credited with the comeback of the Mars-branded confectionary product. 'The consumer response demanding the return of Celebrations last year was incredible so we are thrilled to bring Celebrations back to supermarket shelves around the country,' Mars Wrigley spokesperson Ben Hill said. 'For decades, Celebrations has featured prominently at family gatherings, events and of course, celebrations of all kinds. 'We can't wait for everyone to enjoy them again and for hopefully many years to come.' Prices for the boxes — which include Snickers, Mars, Bounty, Milky Way, Maltesers, Galaxy and Galaxy Caramel — will start at $16. They will be available in Woolworths from next week and Coles will have them in August. The websites for the supermarket giants currently show the products are 'currently unavailable' and 'out of stock'. Kmart already has them available to buy online. Popular food reviewer Russ Eats, who previously ranked Celebrations as the best Christmas chocolate, shared news of the return with his followers. '(The packaging says) 'Australia has spoken' so I'd like to think we (the public) brought them back but I do think there was some problems and they were going to come back anyway,' he said. 'I can confirm (the chocolates) taste the same.' One person described the update as a 'Christmas miracle'. The backflip comes after cost and supply challenges were blamed for the chocolate box being pulled from shelves late last year. 'Our Celebrations products were imported from Europe and, like many Australian businesses importing products from overseas, we're experiencing rising cost pressures and supply challenges,' a Mars spokesperson said at the time. 'Late last year (in 2023), we made the difficult decision to discontinue the Celebrations brand in Australia.' The mixed chocolate boxes have been a popular staple of special occasions since launching in 1997.

Apple farmers' win against supermarket giants
Apple growers across Australia will now be able to export the fruit to China's 1.3 billion population, in a move which will allow growers to be less reliant on supermarket giants. Previously China would only take apples from Tasmanian growers due to biosecurity concerns over fruit flies. However, the finalised deal, which was confirmed in April but officially signed during Anthony Albanese's trip to China, will allow mainland farmers to now also access the market. Apples and Pear Australia Ltd industry head Jeremy Griffith said the deal would give Aussie apple growers an 'extraordinary' opportunity,' with exports set to target a premium market. 'Horticultural sectors are very reliant on Coles and Woolies so any opportunity for the price not be dictated by Coles and Woolies is very important for growers,' he told NewsWire. Mr Griffith said increasing Australia's apple presence in China was a 'long-term' plan, and while some farmers will be ready to export following a February harvest, most will need to finetune the variety and qualities of the fruit. 'The fact they're re-announcing apples is non-consequential because they announced that two months ago, so we were hoping that blueberries would get approved,' he said. 'Blueberries were formally placed on the government's priority list for market access years ago, with agreement from the Chinese government as part of negotiations to progress priority fruits from each country. 'Despite this, they remain locked out of the Chinese market.' However Labor says it has already removed trade barriers on lobster, wine, red meat and copper ores, totalling to $20bn of trade.
