10 BRS MLAs who switched to Congress face disqualification, blow to Revanth Reddy

Telangana may be headed for crucial bypolls following the Supreme Court ruling Thursday setting aside the Telangana High Court order that had stayed disqualification proceedings against 10 Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLAs who switched to the Congress.
In its order, the Court also directed Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar to decide on the MLAs' disqualification within three months.
The apex court ruling drew a sharp reaction from the BRS, which has been slamming the Congress as well as the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi over the issue. 'We thank the CJI (B R Gavai) for ensuring that the democratic structure of this country isn't eroded by malicious methods. I hope Rahul Gandhi who in his 'Panch Nyay' advocated for stronger anti-defection laws and automatic cancellation upon defection, will welcome this decision. I dare you to stand by your own preachings, Mr Gandhi!' BRS working president K T Rama Rao said in a post on X.
He added that he hoped the Congress would accept the Court order, and not 'use the honourable Speaker's position to make a mockery of the Indian Constitution, any further'. The 10 MLAs who had switched to the Congress had done so 'illegitimately', Rao said.
There is no imminent threat to the Congress government even if the MLAs are disqualified as it enjoys a majority on its own with 64 MLAs in the 119-member Assembly. The BRS has 39 MLAs while the BJP and AIMIM have eight and seven respectively. The Congress's ally, the CPI has one MLA.
Speaking to The Indian Express, Rao, popularly known as KTR, said the party was ready for the likely bypolls to fill the seats any time. 'We have been prepared for a year,' he said.
BRS MLC Dasoju Sravan called the ruling 'a slap on the face of perpetrators of injustice and those who do not abide by the Constitution'. 'Not just the bypolls, if the Assembly elections are held today, we will win 80% of the seats,' he told The Indian Express.
The ruling is a personal blow to Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, who in March emphatically declared on the floor of the House that there would be no bypolls even if BRS legislators switched sides.
This remark of the Congress leader had drawn the top court's wrath, with a Bench wondering if it had committed a mistake by letting him off in August last year when he was accused of making allegedly contemptuous remarks. 'Having experienced it on an earlier occasion, was your Chief Minister not expected to at least exercise some degree of restraint? So did we commit a mistake by letting him off that time, not taking action for contempt,' Justice Gavai had said.
On Thursday, the Congress said it respected the Supreme Court ruling, and claimed to be prepared for the bypolls too. 'We started preparations three months ago. In constituencies expected to see bypolls, we have sanctioned double the number of Indiramma illulu (houses) while social security aid is being processed faster. We will easily win all the bypolls,' a senior Congress leader said on the condition of anonymity.
Asked if the Supreme Court ruling was a setback for the CM, the leader said, 'There are ups and downs in politics. Ultimately, it is the people who decide who is their leader and the people of Telangana are with Reddy.'
The 10 BRS MLAs who switched sides to the Congress were T Prakash Goud (Rajendranagar), Pocharam Srinivas Reddy (Banswada), Danam Nagender (Khairatabad), Kale Yadaiah (Chevella), Dr Sanjay Kumar (Jagtial), Kadiam Srihari (Station Ghanpur), Tellam Venkat Rao (Bhadrachalam) and Bandla Krishna Mohan Reddy (Gadwal), Arekapudi Gandhi (Serilingampalli). The Gadwal MLA, however, is said to have returned to the BRS fold already.

Indian economy devastated by five Modi-inflicted shocks: Congress

The Congress on Friday claimed that the Indian economy has been well and truly devastated by a series of 'five Modi-inflicted shocks', and said the government as well as its cheerleaders are being economical with the truth of the real state of the economy. Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said the Modi government, its drumbeaters and cheerleaders are living in a make-believe world. The opposition party's assertions came a day after former Congress president and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi said everybody except Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman know that the country's economy is 'dead'. In a post on X, Ramesh said, 'Over the past decade, the Indian economy has been well and truly devastated by a series of five Modi-inflicted shocks. Nobody else can be held responsible.' He said demonetisation completely disrupted our growth momentum and destroyed the livelihoods of crores of Indians. 'A fundamentally flawed GST–that is a Tax that is neither Good nor Simple–has wreaked havoc on thousands of business enterprises across the country, except the large companies who can afford to pay the cost associated with GST compliance,' Ramesh said. He further claimed that the record imports from China have led to the closure of lakhs of MSMEs across the country–in Gujarat alone, around a third of the MSMEs in the stainless steel industry have shut down their operations. Exports in key areas are dependent on imports of raw materials, components, and intermediates from China, he said. Ramesh pointed out that private investment has lost the buoyancy it demonstrated during 2004-14. 'Indian industrialists are acquiring citizenship of other countries in an ever increasing measure. The politically motivated and extortionist Raid Raj, coupled with the proliferation of Modani's tentacles, has led to a loss of confidence in the Indian economy,' Ramesh alleged. He argued that wages for the majority of Indians have stagnated in the last decade, across sectors and across classes. 'This is particularly so in rural India. Household savings have fallen sharply just as household debt has ballooned. Private mass consumption, one of the key drivers of growth, is sputtering just as luxury consumption has not ebbed, clearly pointing to sharpening economic inequalities,' the Congress leader said. 'The Modi government, its drumbeaters and cheerleaders are living in a make-believe world. They are being economical with the truth of the real state of the economy,' Ramesh said. On Thursday, Gandhi had alleged that the BJP-led government has destroyed the country's economic, defence and foreign policies, and is 'running the country to the ground'. Speaking with reporters in the Parliament House complex, Gandhi had also claimed that a trade deal with the US will happen and US President Donald Trump will define it. Asked about Trump calling the Indian economy 'dead', the Congress leader had said, 'He is right, everybody knows this except the prime minister and the finance minister. Everybody knows that the Indian economy is a dead economy. I am glad that President Trump has stated a fact.' He had alleged that the BJP has destroyed the Indian economy.

Congress faces backlash over caste imbalance in Kerala leadership revamp

THIRUVANTHAPURAM: As the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) gears up for a major organisational overhaul, internal concerns are mounting over the lack of representation for marginalised communities, particularly the Ezhava community, the largest OBC group in the state. Once known for its strong community arithmetic, the Congress in Kerala now finds itself facing a critical challenge: ensuring equitable caste representation within its leadership. This issue has come to the fore as the party deliberates on appointments to key posts, including new KPCC office bearers and district Congress committee (DCC) presidents. Amid growing criticism, the remarks by Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (SNDP) Yogam general secretary Vellappally Natesan have intensified the debate. Following the removal of K Sudhakaran from the KPCC president's post, Natesan accused Opposition Leader V D Satheesan of influencing the change and alleged anti-Ezhava bias. 'In the top posts of Congress, there is no OBC representation now,' a senior Congress leader admitted to TNIE. 'Though Adoor Prakash is the UDF convenor, he does not hold a leadership position within the party. The available data calls into question the Congress leadership's claims on social engineering,' he added. Of the 14 DCCs in the state, only four presidents belong to the Ezhava community. Among the 14 Congress MPs, just two are from the community. Out of the party's 22 MLAs, only one represents the Ezhavas. Notably, none of the three newly appointed working presidents of KPCC hail from this group.
