Texas A&M's collie mascot Reveille X has eye removed after glaucoma diagnosis

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) — Reveille X, Texas A&M's border collie mascot, had her right eye surgically removed after veterinarians diagnosed her with glaucoma, the university's president said Wednesday.
The collie — also known as the 'First Lady of Aggieland' — was diagnosed with glaucoma after experiencing discomfort and cloudiness in her right eye, President Mark A Welsh III said in a message on the school's website. The veterinary team removed the eye out of an abundance of caution after discovering signs of abnormal tissue, he said.
'I'm grateful to report that Miss Rev has come through the surgery successfully, has been discharged and is resting comfortably,' Welsh said.
Texas A&M's Reveille mascot dates back to 1931, when a group of cadets found an injured dog and sneaked her on to campus. The dog barked when buglers played morning reveille, earning her the Reveille name.
Reveille X took over as the latest iteration of the mascot in 2021. A souped-up golf cart known as 'Rev Force One' helps transport the collie across campus.
Welsh said Reveille will take a brief hiatus from engagements as she recovers.
'According to her veterinary team, we can expect Miss Rev to be back to enjoying all her favorite activities — cruising on Rev Force One, attending classes, cheering on the Aggies and keeping our campus squirrels in line — this fall,' he said.

Five new bus stations open in Downtown Pittsburgh as part of PRT's University Line

Five new bus stations are open in Downtown Pittsburgh starting Sunday as Pittsburgh Regional Transit rolls out a big upgrade as part of its University Line Project. The new stations have been installed and have new covers, new seating, and will have technology to tell riders when their bus is coming. Riders will notice the new stops at Steel Plaza, Ross Street, Wood Street, Market Square, and William Penn Place. "Brand new, they're clean," said Aubrey Lyle. "Hopefully, we keep it that way and appreciate our new stations." "I prefer the benches," said Brian Collins. "I'm kind of old, got bad knees, so it's nice to be able to sit down while waiting on the bus." "The setup is nice, you're just missing the trash cans," said Aaron Harden. PRT says the goal of the project and the new stops is to make trips between Downtown, Uptown, and Oakland faster and more reliable. "I go to Oakland quite often, and I catch a lot of buses to go to Oakland; the new way is working good," said Ray Allen. Real-time arrival screens and safety features are set to roll out in the coming weeks, in addition to the new stations. "It's nice because you can just look there and it tells you when it's scheduled, you don't have to get on your phone, it's just right there," Allen said. Construction is complete for the first phase of the project. A second phase will include 18 additional stations along with bike and pedestrian upgrades and will continue through 2027. "That would actually be cool," Harden said. "I would like to see that process, and I know things won't happen overnight, but they will if we grow towards it." Once finished, PRT's University Line is expected to serve over 30,000 riders per day with faster, safer, and more dependable transit.

3 bodies recovered from small plane crash in California: Reports

Three bodies have been recovered following a July 26 small plane crash in Pacific Grove, California, according to local reports. Television stations KION and KSBW reported that the U.S. Coast Guard recovered the bodies July 27. USA TODAY has reached out to the USCG Pacific Area and the Monterey County Sherriff's Office for confirmation. The Federal Aviation Administration said in a preliminary statement to USA TODAY that three people were on the Beechcraft BE55 it alerted as missing off the coast of the town July 26. Flight tracking data published by FlightAware shows flight N8796R leaving from San Carlos Airport at 10:11 p.m. PT heading toward the Monterey Regional Airport. The tracker indicates that the plane turned around over the seaside town and was last seen around 10:37 p.m. PT. Cal Fire told KSBW that witnesses reported hearing an aircraft engine revving, followed by a splash in the ocean. The NTSB will lead the investigation, the FAA said in its statement. This is a developing story. This article originally appeared on USA TODAY: 3 bodies recovered from California small plane crash: Reports
