EP to meet Gardens about Top 12 jersey logo rule

The Herald08-06-2025
New Gardens Rugby Club sponsors Multisure Corporation are unhappy that they cannot display their logo on the front of the team's jerseys when they play in the EPRU Score Energy Drink Top 12 competition.
They have taken issue with teams playing in the Top 12 being forced to carry the competition sponsor's branding on their jerseys rather than those of the local businesses that support them.
Multisure signed a sponsorship deal with Gardens in May, but were informed by EP Rugby that they cannot display their logo on the front of the jersey.
'Because of this agreement, communities are being denied the opportunity to grow by getting vital funding,' Multisure CEO Denton Goodford said.
EP Rugby president George Malgas said a management committee meeting would be held on Monday to discuss the matter and to find a way forward.
'I have had engagements with Gardens and the sponsor Mr Goodford,' he said.
'We will have a manco meeting, understanding our obligation to our title sponsors Score and how we can try to accommodate Gardens and Multisure.
'EP will also have another engagement with Gardens this week.'
Goodford has requested a copy of the agreement between the provincial rugby bosses and the sponsor, but was allegedly denied access.
He has now written to the union in a bid to access the contract in terms of the Promotion of Access to Information Act, and receipt has been acknowledged.
'Nobody knows much about this agreement, whether it's verbal or written and what the exact terms and conditions are,' Goodford said.
'Gardens and other clubs have asked for it, but EP president George Malgas has not released it, citing confidentiality.
'These boys practise three times a week and need to cover transport fees.
'The local business sponsorships help them do that. Individuals and smaller businesses have been assisting clubs for years because the unions cannot provide for them.'
Goodford encountered a similar situation at the South Western Districts (SWD) Rugby Football Union, where the parties entered into a similar agreement, and he believes Garden Route clubs may suffer as a result.
Multisure has ploughed money into Pacaltsdorp's Evergreens in George this year, and the 93-year-old George club has experienced a resurgence.
He said Gardens supporters were already questioning why Multisure was not making any further investments in the club.
'This is why it is important to set the record straight for people in our communities.' — Additional reporting by Full Stop Communications

WP crowned unofficial U13 Craven Week champions in East London

Western Province finished as the top-seeded team to be crowned the champions of the 2025 edition of the U13 Craven Week at Selborne College in East London on Friday after they defeated Boland 21-7 in an unofficial final. This was WP's ninth time they ranked first in the competition after featuring in 13 of the last 14 U13 Craven Week finals. The contest for the number one seed between the sides was a repeat of two years ago, when WP won by a narrow 10-8. This time, converted tries from Francois Gouws, Theolin Edwards and Lihlombe Mabengu ensured they won comfortably over their provincial neighbours. Boland B exacted revenge for their main team beating WP B 23-14 in the unofficial Academy Week final. EP's main team finished seventh in the rankings after their two wins in four games. They beat Griquas 52-5 in the last game. Grey Junior centre Bulelani Norman, Jeffreys Bay lock Warren Grootboom, Woodridge No8 Aqhama Macembe all scored two tries with Kabega Primary's Musa Mdongwane and Gill College's Ruben Lotter the other scorers. Despite showing glimpses of good innovation in their play and forward dominance through the week, Border Central finished as the second-last ranked team in the Craven Week category. The Blue Bulls beat them 41-12 in their final match. Queen's Primary centre Luke Mpangele, who was among the top performing players for the team, scored a try, with the other five-pointer coming through Selborne Primary's Vuyo Foslara. Border Country Districts closed the tournament with the most points conceded in the week, a negative 212 difference, losing all four of their games. EP B finished fifth in the Academy Week standings, finishing with a 17-15 loss to the Golden Lion B team. Right behind EP were Border B, who beat Golden Lions C team 19-0. The 2026 U13 Craven will be held in Bloemfontein. Other results on Friday: Blue Bulls B 22 Pumas B 12, Griffons B 27 Zimbabwe 14, Free State B 38 Limpopo Blue Bulls B 0, Valke B 17 Leopards B 5, Griquas B 10 SWD B 29, Namibia 20 Sharks B 12, Sharks 33 Pumas 19, SWD 21 Free State 7. Junior Springboks dominate Australia with 73-17 victory in World Rugby U20 Championship opener in Italy

The Junior Springboks racked up 11 tries against Australia to get their campaign in the World Rugby U20 Championship off to a powerful start in Calvisano, Italy. It was a game built on absolute physical dominance by the pack of forwards and some excellent strike-running from the backline that laid the foundation for the 73-17 victory over the young Australians. It was sweet revenge for head coach Kevin Foote and his side against a team who beat them last month in Gqeberha during the U20 Rugby Championship. South Africa dominated from the start and had already secured the four-try bonus point after 35 minutes in the match. They scored five of their tries in the first half with some great interplay between the forwards and backs. At the start of the second half, they continued on the same path and concluded the final forty with six tries – the last one right on the full-time whistle. While the backline was full of running as they scored some brilliant tries, including the first one of scrumhalf Haashim Pead where they ran from almost on their own try line, the set pieces fired as well. They were excellent with their lineouts and rolling mauls, although some improvement will be needed in the scrums where they conceded some penalties.

Vodacom Bulls: Jake White out, Johan Ackermann in?

The Vodacom Bulls and Director of Rugby Jake White parted ways on Friday, with Johan Ackermann emerging as the frontrunner to succeed the former Springbok World Cup-winning coach. According to Rapport , Ackermann, the former Lions coach, is favoured to take over in the coming weeks. He is currently serving as a consultant with the Junior Boks and is expected to work with the team until the conclusion of the U20 Rugby Championship. Reports surfaced earlier this week indicating that Ackermann, who shares a strong relationship with Bulls CEO Edgar Rathbone, is likely to replace White. On Friday afternoon, the Vodacom Bulls and Jake White released a joint statement regarding their separation. 'With many years' coaching experience, I felt it would be difficult to get the squad to perform to the next level. Therefore, in the best interest of both myself and the Bulls, I feel it's time for a new chapter. It's time for this group to have a new voice,' the statement read. 'I have enjoyed my time in Pretoria. I met some wonderful friends. I believe that rugby is like life – you win some you lose some. You learn as you grow. You need to be strong and courageous and, most importantly, it isn't always fair. 'I would like to thank all the loyal supporters, the Bulls staff that worked tirelessly, and to the players for their hard work and dedication. I wish BBRU president Willem Strauss and the amateur game lots of success in the future. To the shareholders, I will always be grateful for all the support and financial backing they gave, far and beyond any other club' 'Thank you for the privilege. To the Board for their support and CEO, Edgar Rathbone, coaches and management, it was great to be part of this winning culture. To be part of Bulls rugby history has been an absolute honour. I wish Bulls rugby all the best. Hou die blou bo!' Under Jake White, the franchise reached three consecutive United Rugby Championship (URC) finals but lost all of them.
